Thanks Mr.Blandings, I forgot all about Juarez. (How did that happen.) They were in that film together but no scenes together. Yes, it would have been very interesting to see how they would have worked together, with Garfield in the leading man role.
Thanks

Those are great photos filmlover, thank you.
This photo isn't really behind the scenes, well maybe behind the scenes for the Group theater members.
This photo is soooooo 1930's it is hysterical. Garfield's shoes are a crack-up, I guess that was the style.

Here is another. Behind the scenes or before the start of the Hollywood Canteen. I guess Bette Davis had just washed her hair and couldn't do a thing with it.

I would of liked to see Bette Davis and John Garfield do a movie together.
Well they both appeared in Hollywood Canteen (which they both founded, along with Jules Stein) but that doesn't count.
I know Davis wanted Garfield for the film (I can't think of the name of it) where she plays twins, with Glenn Ford, and Dane Clark. She wanted Garfield for the Dane Clark part, but Warner Bros said no the part was too small for Garfield at the time. It might have been too small but I would of liked to see what he would of done with the part.
Garfield I know wanted to do a film with Davis, especially when he first arrived at WBs, believing he could learn a lot from her and Cagney. I am sure he would of learned a lot from both stars.
Garfield was one actor who always looked from ways to improve his craft. When his contract ran out a WBs, (he didn't want to renew it) he took classes at the "Actors Studio" in the late 40s, just to improve and refreshing his acting talent.
Thanks

Oh dear my secret is out. You guessed it.I wish. There is a website site called digplanet and one can set it up to follow any news, any new twitters, any new books, and any new videos that occur with the name you type in. I put in John Garfield and for awhile now I am getting to read all the reviews that are in online newspapers regarding the release of Body and Soul, Force of Evil, and TPART. It is really pretty neat, because you can also set up for a conversation to occur with other fans.I have not done that yet.
You should check it out for Ginny, info.

Garfield and Turner having fun in the sun and surf.
The Postman Always Rings Twice, 1946, coming to a theater or coffee cafe, or senior center near you soon.

Thank you MovieProfessor for answering my questions so completely, and in such an interesting way.
I think I get it. Julius wasn't gay or bisexual he just liked the ladies. In the book I am reading parts from, there is a claim that Clifford Odets was gay or bisexual and that Brando and Odets got together. The book makes it sounds like Odets would have liked to have a deeper relationship with Julius, but it didn't happen and I am not sure why, unless Julius just said no to his good friend.
True or Hollywood gossip?
I read too, that at Julius's funeral Odets was quite hysterical and buried his face in his hands and couldn't stop crying. I just believed they were really good friends who loved each other like brothers would. Did Odets love Julius in a deeper way even though it was not fulfilled in the way he would of liked?
Do not kill the messenger here Brando fans, but in the book it states that Brando (in the beginning of his career) was quite jealous of Julius. And that Kazan stated that Julius had an affair with Odets wife. I am not sure which of wife. True or Hollywood gossip?
So MovieProfessor if you read this and feel like answering a few more questions that would be great.
Thanks

That is a great picture of Garfield and Ladd, thanks. Yes, I am sure Garfield liked being a film star because of all of the "perks" and "women" that went with the "film star" status. Although I have read that he almost always related better with the film crew, e.g. behind the camera workers, then sometimes with other actors in the film. From some reason I always felt that Flynn was an intelligent man. Poor Garfield didn't even graduate from high school, and I think that probably bothered him a lot at different times in his life. I also think that Garfield's daughter was correct when she stated that her father testified before HUAC, "like a NY street kid" and that his lawyers should taken him by the hand and guided his testimony more closely.
I have read also that Leslie Howard was quite the "hit" with the ladies as well. I think that probably both the cerebral and non-cerebral actors had no problem with getting the ladies when they wanted to.

(L-R) Lola Lane (with hat), Mayo Methot, Humphrey Bogart (sitting), Claire Windsor, Frank McHugh (behind Flynn), Rosemary and Priscilla Lane, John Garfield (with camera) and Jean Parker [join|http://www.westernclippings.com/treasures/westerntreasures_gallery_24.shtml|Powered by Text-Enhance] Errol Flynn in accepting the key to the city of Dodge City, Kansas during the November 1938 premiere of Warner Bros.’ “Dodge City”.
I know this is a variation of a photo you posted sometime ago Tom.
Wasn't Mayo Methot married to Bogart during this time? I remember reading that Mr.and Mrs. Bogart had a room next to Mr. and Mrs. Garfield (I think it was during this trip,) And the Bogarts kept the Garfields wake all night with their fighting. I guess the Garfields would just start to fall asleep, then they would hear crashing sounds next door and the sound of loud voices. I think the Bogarts could really get into some "heavy duty" arguments.

I am not sure but is that Leslie Howard on the right?

Tom, this little paragraph is from a 1942 article from an USO show is for you.
Playing in front of Theater No. 1, the show was witnessed by 4,000 men. Every available seat was taken and before the show started it was "Standing Room Only." The soldiers agreed to a man that vaudeville was here to stay. John Garfield's recitation of Gene Fowler's dramatic soliloquy "The Javis Bay Goes Down" moved the soldiers deeply. *Highlight of his appearance was a story about his daughter, aged four. She recently queried Papa Garfield: "Are you a movie actor?" Papa G. naturally replied "Yes," whereupon she inquired, "Are you a famous movie actor?" Again, yes. "Then maybe you can get Errol Flynn's autograph for me."* {font}
I thought it was pretty cute.

This post is regarding another scheduled screening of " The Postman Always Rings Twice." 1946.
Classic Cinema will present "The Postman Always Rings Twice" with Lana Turner and John Garfield at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 28. Those attending should bring lunch or snacks for intermission.
The Thomas A. Glazier Senior Education Center is located at 16600 Pine Forest Lane in Houston. For more information and a full list of available classes, call 713-274-3250.
I guess the "seniors" or those who were part of "The Greatest Generation" might look forward to viewing a classic film from the 1940's. When I was teaching nursing students at a Long Term Care Facility, every day at noon, the facility would play music from the 40's, swing bands, e.g. Harry James, and other classic band leaders. I enjoyed the music as did the residents.
I just wonder what kind of music will be played when my generation is in the ready for long term care? The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin?

Huh, we see you "sneaking a peek" there Mr. Garfield.

Lauren Bacall comes to my mind. I am almost positive she was a model before she became an actress.

I wanted to bring this thread of Tom's back out front because I just found this photo while reading another great review of the released / remastered DVD / Blu-ray film Body and Soul 1947
See the skates on the great James Wong Howe? He filmed most of the final fight scene this way, on skates and being pushed to could catch just the right shots. Seeing Garfield sweaty and bloody from Howe's handheld camera view give the scenes a kind of news reel/documentary feel.

WOW Fred thank you for posting all these great photos of the actors / actresses who went to Washington, DC to protest the HUAC hearings.
They (the stars) didn't know what they were up against. Very sad period in our country's history in my opinion.

Tom wrote: " It seems a little strange to me, though, the idea of one of Hollywood's best dramatic actors appearing in a [vehicle|http://forums.tcm.com/post%21reply.jspa?messageID=8671744|Powered by Text-Enhance] like Harvey Girls in which the straight leading man roles are usually given to lesser stars as, indeed, was the case in this film. Thus, I think Garfield was smart to turn the part down, even though it meant sacrificing the opportunity to work with a musical legend like Garland."
Tom, I understand completely where you are coming from. I just think it would been fun to see him in a musical with Judy, and in a film shot in color, and it would have gotten him away from the typecasting he was fighting.
I know that he wanted to get away from the typecasting of the "tough guy" with a heart image and even do some comedy. I think he proved he could handle comedy as evidenced by "Saturday;s Children" and then his comedic scenes in "Destination Tokyo" and he had some funny and light-hearted scenes in the beginning of "Pride of the Marines."
The one genre I think he might have had trouble with is Westerns. He would really have to lose his NY accent to make his appearance in those type of films work.
Oh, and lastly, Garfield did a children's record in the 1940's where he tells a story of how Robert the white rabbitt and Raymond the black rabbitt saved Rabbit Town. It is really a sweet story that teaches children that the color of one's skin or fur does not matter. He does all the voices and sings at the end with some children. His singing voice isn't as bad as in "Thank Your Lucky Stars" so maybe he was being "bad" really "bad" on purpose.

One of my Garfield fan friends sent me the recording, and in fact Jack Carson, narrates another children's story on the disc.
Here is a picture, to stay in the spirit of the thread.

Not reallly the classic era of Hollywood, but I wouldn't expect to see these three together.

ginnyfan. With a lot of Garfield's behind the scenes photos there might be a lot of the "behind the scenes" people present. From what I have heard and read, Garfield was one star/actor who was very friendly with the "crew" of the film.
I think he in reality identified more with the non-famous, working class people because of this upbringing in which he lived in what many would consider "abject poverty" during a good portion of his childhood.
Thanks

Thank you MovieProfessor for a very interesting write up regarding the Brando and Cox friendship.
Now I remember reading that at Wally Cox's funeral, Brando became hysterical and took Cox's ashes way from the widow Mrs.Cox. Mrs. Cox was going to go to court to get the ashes back but she changed her mind stating Marlon Brando needs the ashes more than I do.
Is this true or just one of those Hollywood stories?
I also read that Brando asked Kazan if Garfield was "gay" because he went by name "Julie." Kazan sort of laughed and said. "You can't find a "more heterosexual" actor than John Garfield.
True or another Hollywood or maybe NY Broadway story?

Now Tom, quite a few of the Garfield fans I know, like that "Blues in the Night" number he does in "Thank Your Lucky Stars." I mean they like in the way of "it is so bad, it is good" and it is kind of fun to see him in that kind of scene. We think it is kind of cute.
The Harvey Girls isn't one of my favorite Garland films, but I don't think that Hodiak sings in it, does he?
I can fully admit that Garfield wasn't good at everything, but what he was good at, he was in my opinion not just good, but super good and at times quite amazing, e.g. in The Breaking Point, Body and Soul, Force of Evil, and about 10 more films IMHO.
You know I really didn't even notice Mamie Van Doren's out fit. I think Lizabeth Scott looked like a million times sexier than Van Doren. Of course that is just my opinion, and it is the opinion of a woman, maybe some men might prefer Van Doren's out-fit to that of Scott's.
Thanks

My favorite actor and my favorite singer.
Garfield and Garland I think at the Hollywood Canteen. Garfield was offered the part in "The Harvey Girls" first but declined (bad decision) so the part went to John Hodiak, who did a fine job in the film.
John Hodiak was only 41 when he died of a fatal heart attack. He died in the bathroom while shaving, and getting ready to go to the studio for shooting for the film "On the Threshold of Space." Not sure if Hodiak had a rheumatic heart like Garfield's or not.
For some reason, I can't remember why most fatal heart attacks occur in the morning hours.

I don't know either Tom, but Lizabeth Scott's dress is beautiful and her hair down like that looks just lovely. Some of the gowns that the women actresses worn the films of the late 30's and 40s are so lovely and classic, that a woman of today could wear one and be "styling" for sure.

Hi ginnyfan. I really have no idea if Kaye and JG were friends. None of the books I have read about JG mention Kaye as a friend of his. Now JG and Gene Kelly were good friends which a lot people thought didn't make sense (not sure why) any ways, JG and Kelly got along real well together.
I have no idea who the man is next to JG is so don't feel bad.
I remember you asking who the man in the white suit and in the background of your Ginny pic was, but I have not idea who it is either.
Sorry

Danny Kaye and John Garfield at Hollywood Runyan Softball Game. Dec. 1, 1947
Danny looks all "done in" or he doesn't care too much about the game.

I can't think of a movie but I am sure that Portland, Oregon has be mentioned in a film before.
Also in the TV series "Grimm," Portland, Beaverton, and Tigard has been mentioned. The series takes place in Portland, Oregon.
Damascus has been mentioned in some Bibical movies I am sure, e.g. Paul on the road to Damascus is where he sees Jesus.
There is a Damascus,Salem, and Ashland Oregon.

h6. {color:black}Stop by to participate in The John Garfield Petition and be entered in Max Bloom's Contest, details at Cafe Noir. In honor of the petition: "Give Star Recognition Back To A Legendary Star, John Garfield" we will be screening The Postman Always Rings Twice, 1946 on Tuesday August 28th at 7:30PM!

A "full deep breath" needs to be taken in after getting a full look at lovely Lana.
It is little gestures like this one that made Garfield's acting so natural, so honest, so believable and to me, so great!
A couple of comments from people who have signed my petition.
{font:Arial}"John Garfield is an actor who needs to be re-discovered!! He was a "method" actor before they shouted about Brando!! He deserves to be shown some recognition!"{font}
{font:Arial}" A legendary actor. His films stand the test of time. He and his films are referenced in film and acting classes and schools."{font}
