  1. Where I live there is a great video store called Movie Madness Video and More. The store carries everything from new DVD videos, to classics to MST3K videos to rent. The owner used to work in Hollywood and over the years he has collected quite a large amount of movie props and costumes. There is a small museum in the store where many costumes and props are displayed. I found two "items" from the owner's collection that I would like to have. 1. The tap shoes James Cagney worn and danced in "Yankee Doodle Dandy" 2. The three piece suit and tie John Garfield worn in the film "Saturday's Children" Thanks Lori
  2. Oh my goodness, I have seen The Searchers at least a dozen times and I never realized that the young solider is Patrick Wayne! He had some great scenes with the (always great) Ward Bond. I really enjoy seeing and reading about these behind the scenes you are posting. Thanks Tom for doing this. Lori
  3. Hey ginnyfan and kriegerg69 you both have a good question. To tell you both the truth I am not sure, but I will find out and post the answer as soon as I can. For some reason I am assuming that the films the cafe shows are on DVDs, and are shown on a large screen. It does look like a fun place to stop by and have a cup of "joe", and maybe a muffin on the side. ginnyfan, I am 1,000 miles away from the cafe, so unfortunately I will not be there for the fun either.(I am kind of "sick at heart" that I would be able to attend, but that's life sometimes.) The weird thing is that my husband and I lived and worked in Fullerton, CA, for years until we moved to beautiful "sunny" Oregon. Downtown Fullerton is the older section of the city, but it is maintained very well, and it is quite charming to just stroll down the streets and check out the shops and cafes. Thanks Lori
  4. Hello. On August 28th at 7:30pm there will be a special screening of "The Postman Always Rings Twice" 1946 at "Max Bloom's Cafe Noir." Max Bloom's Cafe Noir is a 1940's style Coffee House with Movies, Music and More, which is located in Fullerton, Calif. The owner of the Cafe is airing TPART in association with my petition for WB's to manufacture a box-set of John Garfield's films for purchase. The owner has also agreed to have "flyers" and "posters" displayed at his cafe that will promote my petition. I am of course very grateful that he is assisting me in this way. So if you are live close to Cafe Noir, in Fulleton, Calif, and are interested in attending the screening of TPART on August 28th, I am posting the link to the cafe, that will give you the phone number, and address you will need. Sitting is limited so you will need to call and make reservations. The cafe serves food as well as coffee drinks, and every Tuesday night is movie night. Just in case some of you haven't not signed my petition, I am also including a link to it, if you care to support me in this "cause." One recent signer of my petition wrote the following comment, which I think just about says it all. "The lack of recognition for the extradionary talent of John Garfield is bewildering. It's shocking that Warner Brothers ignores the contributions of one of it's greatest stars. Come on Warners - do the right thing. Put together a box-set of Garfield films, so that this new generations can enjoy his unique acting ability." Thank you Lori Here is the link to the Cafe Noir: http://www.maxbloomscafenoir.com/index.html Here is the link to my petition: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/778/073/466/give-star-recognition-back-to-a-legendary-star/ Edited by: Lori3 on Jul 25, 2012 4:28 PM
  5. Hi ginnyfan, you did another great job, I like others didn't realize she was from such a "show business" family. Where did you find all those great pictures? I am learning so much about Virginia Weidler, and I love it. Thanks Lori
  6. Yes, ginnyfan me and a lot of other girls thought Chad was "pretty hot" back in the day and we never missed Medical Center. R.I.P. Mr. Everett. Thanks for the memories. Lori
  7. Tom, my contribution to your thread. Setting up a shot for "Force of Evil," 1947. Abraham Polonsky (director), George Barnes (camera man) and John Garfield (star) One of my favorite photos of Garfield. Sorry, did realize it was so big. Lori
  8. Thanks hlwdkjk for the info. I appreciate it. I only wish they (TCM) would include "The Best Man" in the mix. I love that movie. Maybe they have and it just isn't listed. Oh well, sounds interesting, I guess! (Sorry I am in a foul mood today! I need to count my blessings or something!) Lori
  9. Thanks TopBilled. Like I wrote, I was just curious. Lori
  10. I am just curious, does anyone have any idea what the "TCM Presents, Hollywood Goes to Washington" 2012 special is about? It is scheduled to be aired twice on October 5th. Thanks Lori
  11. From the Film Noir Foundation. As part of a multi-feature exploration of The Breaking Point, Carl Steward examines how John Garfield's life mirrored that of Hemingway's desperate hero. Very interesting article on how the character of Harry Morgan's life parallels with the real life of John Garfield and his HUAC testimony, the blacklisting, and his premature death at 39. Here is the link if any of you care to read the article. http://www.filmnoirfoundation.org/home.html Thanks Lori3 Edited by: Lori3 on Jul 19, 2012 1:13 AM
  12. Hi ginnyfan, if you go to Bing.com then type in photos of Virginia Weidler you should find a lot of photos of Ginny. Also, just for you, I checked out ebay for Ginny stuff (maybe you already checked it out) and there are about 30 pictures and / or different things related to her there. Here is a new picture (for me) that I found of Ginny. Thanks too for the information you provided on her. Lori
  13. In Humoresque 1946, Ruth Nelson who played John Garfield's mother in the film was only 8 years older than he. In Body and Soul 1947, Anne Revere who played John Garfield's mother in the film was only 10 years older than he. Revere was also a direct descendant of Paul Revere. Lori
  14. Tom, it was a different time back then when Hollywood supported the troops of WWII This maybe a little of the subject of the thread, but I consider all men and women who have fought or are fighting for this country as "stars." John Garfield visits The 450th Bomb Squad in Italy. Garfield spent 4 years of his life traveling overseas and entertaining the troops. My last contribution, I promise. Lori
  15. Forgive me but I am following up on Tom's most recent post with a few more pictures from the Hollywood Canteen. h1. The troops of WWII loved Garfield, and every night at the Hollywood Canteen they would shout, "We want Johnny, We want Johnny." They saw in him, not a "movie star" but a regular guy just like them. h1. Back when Russia were our "friends." h1. The great Judy Garland "belts" one out for the troops. A completely different time for sure. Thanks Lori
  16. My favorite "hoofer" with my favorite Muppets. Lori
  17. R.I.P. Celeste Holm! She was wonderful in "All About Eve" and "Gentleman's Agreement" Quite a few people I know wanted her character in Gentleman's Agreement to end up with Peck, not McGuire's. I guess Bette Davis didn't speak to her at all during off carmera times of "All About Eve" and she thought Gregory Peck was no fun at all to work with. That makes three, Andy, Ernie and now Celeste. Lori
  18. Hi Ginnyfan, I agree with RachelVixen, you do always seem to keep your cool when having to deal with not very nice posters. I should take a lesson from you because I always seem to get drawn into "their world" and react which is what they want. Your Facebook page is really is really a lovely tribute to Ginny. I posted a picture of her over on Tom's thread "Stars you don't normally see together." It was taken at Judy Garland's 17th birthday party that L.B.Mayer gave her and Ginny looks like she is the youngest of the group. You should be able to find it if you wade through all the Garfield photos I posted. Lori
  19. Kaye and Garfield signing autographs for the troops of WWII at the Hollywood Canteen. Even though they aren't a couple of beautiful "dames" the troops still seemed interested in getting autographs from these two talented men. Edited by: Lori3 on Jul 14, 2012 11:12 PM
  20. March (I think) Oberon, and Chapin. The writer of the blog I got this picture from didn't have very nice things to say about Miss.Oberon, or actually how she treated her mother. Edited by: Lori3 on Jul 14, 2012 10:38 PM Edited by: Lori3 on Jul 14, 2012 10:40 PM
  21. h1. {font:Verdana}Anatole Litvak, Olivia de Havilland and John Garfield at Ciro’s. February, 1940{font} Lori Edited by: Lori3 on Jul 14, 2012 9:22 PM
  22. Hey ginnyfan here is another picture of Ginny. I didn't realized she was cremated and her ashes were scattered at sea. Someone did set a memorial for her,on the Find a Grave website. Another fan, you should check it out. Lori
  23. Ginny is on the right, next to Mayer. Party of Judy's 17th birthday. Of course Mickey is hamming it up. Posting this picture for my friend "ginnyfan." Edited by: Lori3 on Jul 14, 2012 6:43 PM
  24. Both this men had an affair with the lovely Lana!
  25. I say too, RIP Richard Zanuck he was involved in a lot of great movies, Thank you. While his father was also instrumental in many great movies he was far from a nice man. I just found the following the other day and just thought I would share. From a book by Hildegard Knef an actress who spent sometime with John Garfield during his last hours on this earth. Knef got lost on her way to Darryl Zanuck’s desert house – and arrived very late for the dinner party (bear in mind this was after John Garfield refused to name names): The host was already sitting over coffee and liqueurs with his guests but the warmth of his welcome soon dispelled my anxiety and I thankfully sipped the whisky he offered. He resumed the monologue which my arrival had apparently interrupted and I tried to catch the rhythm of the nods and grunts of agreement from the others. With a jolt, we suddenly realized that he’d paused. Looking up, I found his face within inches of mine, front teeth locked around a cigar, sparks flying: “You know what Communism means?” “What?” “Communism!” “No,” I said. “Sure you do, you suffered at the hands of Communism.” “Well no, that was war…” “War or not, the Communists are the enemies of civilization, of our free country.” His face appeared to melt, shrivel, only the cigar stayed whole, shrunken head-hunter head, abracadabra --- gone. “I’d like to see people like Garfield rotting of cancer in jail,” the grotesque head says, “And everyone of my friends here tonight’ll agree with me. Whaddaya say?” I hear again. His wife stood and clapped her hands. The person who wrote this in her blog, ended with "Very nice Darryl, very nice, you kiss your mother with that mouth or just your mistresses? Lori Edited by: Lori3 on Jul 14, 2012 3:24 PM
