Yes everyone in the film were just perfect. A great film for sure. Interesting that RO mentioned that Judy Garland was the first choice of the Eve,Eve,Jane role. As much as I love Judy, it had to be Joanne Woodward who got this role. She was outstanding in the role, her performance is one to go down in the history books.
I feel awful saying this but is Mrs.Paul Newman still with us?

Hi ginnyfan. I just wanted to let you know that I am very happy for you and all the progress you are making in searching for information regarding your favorite!
In anything I have every seen Virginia Weidler in I always enjoyed her performances. I think she came close to stealing at least part of the film in The Philadelphia Story. She was just darling in that role!
I am at a "stand still" regarding "Julie" but I am not giving up. I am in the process of contacting other sites, and names to get their support for my petition.
Any ways, keep up the good work.
Thanks

Hi willbefree25. Actually John Garfield was very supportive of the minorities, one of the only actors of his time to give a speech in front of an all African American audience encouraging them to demand equality. He fought studio heads to have African American's in his films, even when he was told, "that it wasn't such a good idea." And his son David said while at his father's funeral he remembered seeing a "sea of black faces" all who were very upset. Garfield had his faults but was a good man in many ways.
If I can figure out how to download this cd on to the Classic Union Film page I will let you know.
Also, if type in google search "The Ravin Maven" click on it will take you to a page that has many old classic stars listed e.g. James Cagney, Rex Harrison, John Garfield etc. Just click on your favorite (James Cagney?) and explore their page, lots of fun info, and a Guestbook where you can communicate with other fans of your favorite actor. If you do come over to John Garfield's site and Guestbook, just tell them Lori sent you! :^0
Oh and TikiSoo, it might seem funny or strange but Garfield and Kelly were very good friends! They do kind of sound a like, maybe because both were New York born, and raised there.

One member of the "Garfield's Gang" fan club I belong to sent me a cd with a recording of John Garfield narrating a story called "How Raymond the white rabbit and Robert the black rabbit save rabbit town."
It such a precious recording. The story is all about how white rabbits and black rabbits are all the same, and no rabbit is better than other. Although the evil Fox does get them to fight each other for awhile, but best friend Robert and Raymond save the day. Such a sweet story of racial equality!
Any ways it is very special little treat for me. So much fun hearing him do different voices, and tell the story with his New York accent. I am not sure when the recording was done but I would imagine in the 40's because the music sounds like 1940 style music.
I thought I would copy the link here of where I think the cd came from in case any of you are interested in hearing your favorite tell a fairytale or read poetry. Here is a listing of other classic actors I found who had recordings on this website.
Tyrone Power, Edmund O'Brien, Danny Kaye, Robert Donat,James Stewart and many more.
The other thing is I would like to download this recording on the Classic Union Fan Page, under the group for John Garfield. If any one can tell me how to do that I would really appreciate it.
The website is called, SPOKEN WORD RECORDS
Here is the Link:

Hi Fred. Again I am not attacking you for liking this and other shorts travel films. And I agree with you when you wrote:There was a narrow window in the early 1940s when the US government wanted the studios to make pro-Soviet films that could be sent to Moscow to show Stalin that the US wanted the Soviet Union to become friendly allies so they could help us defeat Germany, which was a common enemy at that time.
I just find it ironic when pro-Soviet short and feature films and those associated with them are given "pass" so to speak, but John Garfield has to explain why he was involved with The National Council of American-Soviet Friendship in 1943.
Here is a piece of Garfield's testimony for HUAC in April 1951 regarding the above organization.
Mr. Tavenner: Were you a member of a motion picture committe of the National Council of American-Soviet Friendship?
Mr. Garfield: Could you tell me what year that was?
Mr. Tavenner: 1943{color:black}
Mr. Garfield. I don't remember being a member. I don't remem{color:black}ber an organization of that kind.
{color:black}
Mr. Tavenner. This may refresh your recollection about it. Paul{color:black}ine Swanson, National Council of American-Soviet Friendship, is{color:black}sued a press release indicating that on August 22, 1943, a speech and{color:black} cocktail party would be given at the Mocambo Restaurant in Holly{color:black}wood in honor of Russian film director Mikhail Kalatozov, which{color:black} was being arranged by the motion-picture committee of the National {color:black}Council of American-Soviet Friendship. Among the list of spon{color:black}sors was the name of John Garfield.
{color:black}
Mr. Garfield. Well, I don't remember sponsoring that organiza{color:black}tion. I spoke at one time, in 1943. I remember this vividly, it was{color:black} during the war when the Russians were our allies — downtown at the{color:black} Shrine Auditorium with Mayor Bowron and many city officials and{color:black} many people in the motion-picture industry. That is the only func{color:black}tion I remember in relation to that organization. {font:Arial}{color:black} {font}
I agree with actor James Cromwell when he said, "HUAC was losing it's mandate and the support of the American people. They needed a "big" name movie star to find guilty."
So the studio heads wanting to keep in good graces with HUAC told them take John Garfield. He was named because he was not under contract at any studio at the time.
Disgusting, just so disgusting!

Hey TCMFan 23, It sounds like you need to write a petition to the "powers that be" at Warner Bros, like the one I did.
If you want the website that "makes it easy" to write a petition just let me know and I will post it for you.
If do write one, I'll sign it, if you sign mine.

Well things sure changed a few years after WWII.
Who is Fitzpatrick?
Did he or she or someone from MGM receive a subpoena to appear before HUAC to explain this film?
Insane!
Not "insane" Fred that you enjoyed this short, I am sure it is very interesting.
It is just that the whole "Red Scare" that happened in our country was "insane!"
It seems it was perfectly fine for American's to admire and support Russia during WWII, I mean after all they were helping us defeat Hitler.
Yet after WWII around 1947 you better be able to explain yourself if you were pro-Soviet or a liberal for that matter.
Thanks

misswonderly, yes of course I do! I love Gene Kelly, Judy Garland, Vivian Leigh, and many more. I have been classic movie fan for many years so I can go on with the list.
I am very appreciative of the many great actors of the past like, James Cagney, Spencer Tracy, William Powell, and Robert Donat I think was brilliant actor! I have favorites too in our current time too, e.g. Johnny Depp, Colin Firth, Tommy Lee Jones, etc.
I can't really explain why it is to me that John Garfield was the BEST (In my humble opinion).
Maybe it is because I see such honesty in his performances. Maybe it is because the more I learn about his life the more I see what a complex and fascinating man he was. Maybe it is because I admire all the good things he did in his short life e.g. his generous nature, his love for his country, his "standing up" for the minority actors, or maybe because in the end he stayed true to his boyhood code of "you don't rat on your friends" and I admire that.
I could go on but I won't. I will just say, like the other members of his "fan club" I belong to he is, "Our Beloved Star" and many of the other members have been fans of his for many, many years.
I sorry if I am "driving people crazy" with my John Garfield posts. I will cut back. I did leave a post on thread you did "Attention John Garfield Fans" thanking you for your help. I hope you read it.
Thanks

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Mr.Osborne.
You are such class act and I have learned so much about the great "Golden-Age" of film from watching you.
You are a true treasure to the classic movie fan.
Thank you.

Hey thanks clore for doing this list.
Yeah, but no fair, John Garfield is on there twice but that was before I saw (for the first time) The Postman Always Rings Twice, and REALLY discovered the beautiful acting art that was John Garfield!
I think he should be featured again next year since, March 4 2013 will be the 100th anniversary of his birth, or am I being too selfish?
Thanks

willbefree25, I second what you just wrote and may I say "he is no James Cagney either."
I am sharing with my "Garfield Gang" fan club what you wrote a few days ago about how your eyes almost popped out like the wolf in the Bugs Bunny cartoons when you heard the comparison of Wahlberg to Garfield! I sure they will love it, and they will probably want to vote you in to the club.
I will give you 3 guess as to what our secret word is. Hint: The secret word has to be repeated twice, and he said it in just about all of his films, except Juarez!
Thanks

Hi markbeckuaf. Thanks for asking. I really enjoyed the film. I thought Garfield did a very good job in portraying the "con-man" part of his character and then when he started to fall for Fitzgerald's character I found him very believable. He and Fritzgerald had good chemistry together and the supporting cast was just great. I was kind of worried about old Walter pulling off the con-man role, but he was great and he and Garfield worked well off each other. Of course Walter was such a great character actor I should have known not to be worried.
I know that NLF is not on DVD which is a shame. I would buy it. I don't think that it would be included in a box-set of John Garfield's films because it is such a little known film of his. That is if the box-set ever does come to pass.
I glad you enjoyed it too.
Thanks

Thank you willbefree. I am sorry you kind of got attacked here, but I know you can handle it. I agree Garfield's performance was excellent. In my opinion he is one of Method actors of the earlier days at least that didn't have "chew up" the scenery to get his characters emotions told to the audience. Garfield could say volumes with his eyes and facial expressions. But of course he was the first student of the Method style of acting and with his arrival in Hollywood he changed the face and soul of film acting.
I am not really upset that RO didn't mention the tragic event that occured during the filming of NLF. I just wanted to let people know that maybe during the filming he turned at little bit more to drinking to dull the pain. But, like RO said even if he showed up like he had been out all night he still was prepared and always remembered his lines, and he didn't look at all "hungover" on film.
Thanks again, and I always enjoy reading your posts.
-
Yes, I agree let us just stay off politics for now, and just say (in my opinion) HUAC and all the BS was a very shameful time in our history. And what was done not only to Garfield's career but many other actors, directors and writers was criminal.
I would like to focus just a minute on what RO said after the film in regards to Negulesco and Garfield's relationship. The two men became friends and Negulesco directed Garfield in two more films.
RO mentioned that Negulesco looked at Garfield has his kind of "cash cow." Because at least during NLF Garfield would show up looking not his best because of a hard night of drinking with friends. The crew would bet Negulesco that Garfield would be useless that day and not be prepared, forgetting his lines etc. Negulesco took the bet, and always won, because Garfield was always prepared and knew his lines.
What RO failed to mention that during this time Garfield was also making The Pride of Marines, so he was at the studio late into the evening.
Also during this time, Garfield's first daughter 6 year ago Katherine died suddenly and tragically from an severe allergic reaction. According to Fitizgerald, she and the other cast members had no idea he had suffered such a lost, because he never mentioned it or let on that he was in pain.
So, yes Garfield did have his weaknesses and wasn't perfect, I cut the poor man a break because he really had his share of heartaches.
Please don't think I am in anyway "mad" at RO for not mentioning this, I love RO.
I just like to set the record straight, and say maybe the drinking increased during that time because of his terrible loss..
Thanks
And let's not forget why misswonderly started this thread. To help me get more names for the petition to get Garfield that box-set of his films. Here is the link again.

Thank you Lancelot. I hope you enjoy the Garfield films. Try to check more out as they get aired on TCM. I am quiet sure you will not be disappointed.
Leonard Maltin wrote Garfield never gave a bad performance, he made a few B pictures but he always gave a believable performance.

Thank you casablancalover. No I have never seen Nobody Lives Forever. It comes on at 5pm where I am at, so I am looking forward to seeing it. From the small but passionate John Garfield fan club I belong to, all of them say it is a really good film. Then at 11:15pm Humroesque is on, and I love that film!
So I will be making some popcorn, and my husband knows to keep quiet or go outside and play.

-
misswonderly, I love you for doing this, and I sincerely Thank you!
I will take all the help I can get to get people to add their name to this petition!
I was feeling kind of sad and thinking this might be a lost cause. Especially when I would see something like 480 views, and 12 posts! I was hoping there would a lot more positive and supportive responses from TCM viewers
The petition can stay active on the website till 10/24/12 then a letter has to be written and it along with the petition will be sent to the "powers that be." So I have some time yet to get to the goal of 2500 names.
I have plans of posting the petition on other websites, e.g. the many film noir sites since he is very popular with the film noir fans. I just thought I would get most of the support from TCM fans, but whatever, people might think the petition is a lost cause.
I personally don't believe it is a lost cause, and to me it is just shameful and so wrong that Garfield doesn't already have a box-set of his films.
Any ways again Thank You so much! I believe in Heaven, so I believe that when you get to Heaven I just know there will be an extra jewel on your crown for this thoughtful gesture you did.

From Woody Allen's "Take the Money and Run."
NARRATOR is speaking the line, talking about Woody's character Virgil who has just been sent to "chain gang type of prison."
*Virgil complains and he is severely tortured. For several days, he is locked in a sweatbox with an insurance salesman.*

TCMfan23, from your lips to God's ears. Unfortunately I would think that TCM already has there SUTS days already planned.
Another really good movie of Garfield's is "The Fallen Sparrow" made as a loan out to RKO, 1943.
It is a film that is pure 1940's all of it. And it gives Garfield a role he can really "sink his teeth into" and he does.
A forgotten little gem of a film, much like Garfield himself.

Peyton Place is a really boring movie, in my opinion! I just had it on for a while, then could take no more. Who was the actor that played Lana's love interest? He had the most irritating voice I have heard come out of a man's mouth.
Now watch, someone is going write a post saying this guy is their favorite actor and he had beautiful voice!
I was just a wee little girl when this movie can out, was it a hit?
Thanks

Before your favorite actor or actress became famous or started working in films, what was the funniest or strangest job they had?
I'll start it out!
*Before John Garfield really started acting in theater he, sold Margaret Sanger "diaphragms" to medical offices and door to door!*
Can you imagine opening your door and there stands a good looking young man saying, Hello, I am John Garfield, would you like to buy a diaphragm? For some reason I kind of think he was a good salesman, and sold a lot of diaphragms :^0
So share your favorite celebrities work stories, before they became famous or started acting.
Please if you haven't signed my petition to convince WB/TCM to finally produce a box-set of his film here is the link that will take you to the petition site.
If you have already put your name to this petition, THANK YOU!
I have a thread under the forum Hot Topics, which deals with this petition. So please tell me this is not considered spamming? If it is, I will just click the edit button and delete the link.
I just got so few response, I thought I would try again.

TCMfan23. Yes I know the slap scene you are talking about. I guess one could say he had a suprised look on his face after that double slap, but I what I saw was more "shocked" look so I didn't laugh.
But I can understand what you are saying.
Garfield got slapped a lot in his films but usually by the females.
Have you seen that WB blooper from "They made me a criminal" where the old grandma character slaps the (you know what) out of him?
It is really funny!

clore. I am not trying to be mean or nasty but where are these other threads? I haven't seen any other threads with this same topic?
I must be missing something. What forum are they under?
If you can let me know I would appreciate it. I am just curious now.
You might not be able to respond to me though if this thread is closed or deleted.
Thanks

Cheating a little because this line is from the TV show Frasier.
Marsha Mason character Sherry is telling Niles to "buck up" in regards to his recent separation.
Sherry: It is like my old mother used to say, "The best way to get over someone is to get under someone else!"
Niles: Funny, I didn't realize Mae West had children.
I am sorry, I just think that is a very funny line, and probably something Mae West would have said herself.
