    the ladykillers

I'm so thrilled they included this gem in the 31 Days schedule, even though it didn't win anything and was only nominated in one category. A film with all character actors- how can it go wrong?!

My favorite scene is when Katie Johnson first interrupts the "Quartet" when they are practicing. When she opens the door and they all pick up their instruments, Herbert Lom is holding his Viola upside down. 😄

 is hiding from this category! The winner is MY OCTOPUS TEACHER. :)

  3. I would say Susan Peters (1921-1952) had a tragic life.

A promising young actress who garnered an Academy Award nomination for her role in RANDOM HARVEST and further acclaim for SONG OF RUSSIA, she was on a hunting trip with her husband on New Year's Day in 1945 when she reached for a rifle and it dislodged into her abdomen, leaving her permanently paralyzed from the waist down. After a long recovery, she made a return to films with THE SIGN OF THE RAM. She did some stage, radio and TV work, but began suffering from depression. Her physical health started suffering as well, and in August of 1952 she began starving herself. She died on October 23rd of kidney failure, pneumonia, malnutrition and dehydration.

  4. TCM Big Screen Classics did show THE TEN COMMANDMENTS in theaters on Easter Sunday.

The 1959 BEN HUR aired I believe on Friday as part of the 31 Days Of Oscar.

I missed watching some of the Easter films, as well. The 1925 BEN HUR or the 1928 KING OF KINGS usually occupies the Silent Sunday Nights time slot on Easter, and I've enjoyed watching JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR  and GODSPELL in years past.

When I was a kid, we were always able to find a TV station showing JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. It kind of became a tradition in our home! On Easter night, THE SOUND OF MUSIC would always be on TV.

It's always a pleasure to see EASTER PARADE, though. Fun film!

An odd side attraction featured twelve-year-old film star Bobby Connelly on stage, in a playlet entitled “A Man and his Wife.” As one reviewer described it, “Bobby is playing the hero part … he carries a gun and whips it out with all the ease of a Tom Mix or William S. Hart, hurling quasi-stentorian defiance to the home-breaker who  dares to take from him his darling little wife, Dot Willens, aged seven.”

  6. I always thought the film version of PAINT YOUR WAGON was much better than it's reputation suggested. I don't even think Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin did that bad with their singing. At the very least, no one could argue that Harve Presnell's rendition of "They Call The Wind Maria" was something special.
