  1. It also likely had to do with the person's religious beliefs. If they were catholic, for example, it would be better to stay in the closet in those days.
  2. She was a lovely, talented woman with a beautiful voice. I hope she was happy in her later years. RIP.
  3. I believe James Earl Jones wasn't credited for the voice of Darth Vader in STAR WARS.
  4. The lovely actress, Isabel Jewell, was uncredited in at least 5 films ( and not all of them were at the beginning of her career.) I often wonder why she didn't have a more lucrative film career; she was a very good character actress, in my opinion.
  5. In celebration of Frank Capra, who was born on May 18th, 1897, one of my favorite scenes from MR. DEEDS GOES TO TOWN.
  6. In celebration of Maureen O'Sullivan, who was born on this day, May the 17th, in 1911. A radio program recording from The Screen Director's Playhouse in 1949, starring Ms O'Sullivan and Ray Milland, and directed by John Farrow!
  7. In honor of Henry Fonda, who was born on May the 16th, 1905, my favorite film clip of him. He just seemed destined to play the role of Tom Joad in THE GRAPES OF WRATH.
  8. James Mason was born on this day, May the 15th, in 1907. I love this TV clip of him and Joan Hackett from a televised version of REBECCA. I like Mason's Maxim de Winter. He plays him a bit more approachable than Laurence Olivier did. Also, the wonderful Joseph Cotton was born on this day as well, in 1905. I love his cold, calculated expression and voice in this short clip from SHADOW OF A DOUBT.
  9. I saw the matinee showing today in Roseville, CA. Only 10 folks in the entire theater! How disappointing. I've seen so many of these Big Screen Classics series, always the Sunday matinees. Every film has had at least a half-full theater. I can't imagine why they stayed away today. ?
  10. Barry Gordon wasn't really a child (he was actually 17) when he played the role of Nick Burns in A THOUSAND CLOWNS, but he was terrific in the film, nonetheless.
  11. On this day, May the 12th in 1907, Katherine Hepburn was born. In her honor, one of my favorite scenes with her and Cary Grant from BRINGING UP BABY.
  12. Louis Hayward played both Louis XIV and Philippe of Gascony in THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK. I have no clue how many other productions there are of this very famous and often filmed book.
  13. I feel the same way. The only aspect that is important to me is that the films being shown are commercial free. I can use the "in between time" to do any of the 1001 things I need to get done yet ignore every day. ?
  14. Irving Berlin was born on this day, May the 11th, in 1888. In honor of him.... Cheek To Cheek from TOP HAT!
  15. Looking forward to THE SHOW, as well. I love Tod Browning's seedy view of mankind! Also, John Gilbert's work in his non-Garbo silent films often gets overlooked.
  16. Young Edna May Wonacott had no aspirations of being an actress when Alfred Hitchcock spotted her with her cousins in Santa Rosa, CA, while checking out the local for his film SHADOW OF A DOUBT. He soon had her screen tested in Los Angeles and then cast her as Teresa Wright's bookworm sister in the film. I thought she did a pretty darn good job, too. She credited Hitchcock for his explicit direction.
  17. Since today is May the 10th, a film clip in honor of Fred Astaire's birthday! My favorite Fred dances were usually the ones where he was showing his incredible musicality. This one is a compilation of Gershwin tunes from A DAMSEL IN DISTRESS.
  18. Roberto Benigni was hilarious as Dante and gangster Johnny Stecchino in JOHNNY STECCHINO (which he also directed.)
  19. Julie Herrod as Audrey Hepburn's neighbor in WAIT UNTIL DARK was very good.
  20. Terry Kilburn played John Colley and then the roles of Peter Colley I, II and III in GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS.
  21. Natalie Wood was indeed terrific in TOMORROW IS FOREVER. I really liked Shirley Temple's teenage and ingenue roles, as well. Actually, I liked them much more than her child roles.
  22. I don't care for it, either; too long, too slow. I'm so glad to see a block of Donat films, though. He didn't make that many, but he is great in all of them. I find his acting much more natural than most of the other British gents that appeared in the golden age of English films. He had a knack for comedy, as well. Its a shame he didn't appear in more of them.
  23. Nearly the entire cast of 1928's NOAH'S ARK played dual roles;first in the modern day part of the film, then the biblical.
  24. Paul Muni played Eddie Kagle and Judge Parker in ANGEL ON MY SHOULDER.
  25. Beautiful Rita Hayworth played Rusty Parker and her grandmother Maribelle Hicks with almost identical make-up and hairstyles, despite the forty year difference in the times they were performers in COVER GIRL.
