  1. Vance was in THE SECRET FURY (1950) with Philip Ober
  2. I noted Deanna's crying and how natural it appeared. Someone noted here a couple of weeks ago that some child actresses were better at emoting than others; that even some otherwise talented actresses just couldn't do it. At about age 14 or so, Virginia Weidler actually said it was hard for her because her own life was so happy. Obviously, Deanna had that rare skill. And she did show a natural delivery for dialogue, something I value as I really prefer "talky" pictures. As I said, I haven't been exposed to many Durbin films and might not have tuned in were it not for my current interest in young actresses of tne era. I hope TCM schedules more in the near future.
  3. It was absolutely delightful! In addition to Durbin's performance, I was pleased to see Frank Jenks get an extended role. I also liked a couple of shots at the end. First, Patsy's reflection showing up in the music stand of the piano and then the wonderful shot of the orchestra positioned around the staircase. Very well set up.
  4. WALTER SLEZAK! One of those character actors I forgot to mention when that thread was hot.
  5. Channel 9, then WTOP, in DC used to show the Aldrich movies almost every Sunday morning in the late 1960s. The one I seem to remember is Henry in the Boy Scouts, although I certainly could be mistaken. Why is Universal withholding this material? Couldn't they do what Warner Archive does with the WB and MGM films?
  6. I watched the beginning last night. That didn't look like anything I'd expect from an American studio to start a 1930s film. Pretty cool. I'll catch the rest today.

  10. > {quote:title=Sprocket_Man wrote:}{quote}Jerry Goldsmith's STAR TREK theme is -- by virtue of its being used in five feature films and 176 episodes of the Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series (not to mention how often it's played in concert) -- the most-played and most lucrative film composition of all time. Since the PATTON March has literally played in my head every day for 42 years, I'm going to go with him as well.

  18. I'm really looking forward to seeing this film. Commenters in my Virginia Weidler thread compared her silence in retirement to Durbin's own self imposed exile and my research has led me to looking at several other juvenile actresses including Deanna's backup, Gloria Jean. I must admit that I don't believe I've seen a Durbin feature in over twenty years, and I couldn't tell you which one I saw then. I have seen EVERY SUNDAY several times, but that doesn't really count.
  19. Day was in THE WEST POINT STORY (1950) with Virginia Mayo
