>I kind of resent all the attention Jackie Robinson gets, while Larry Doby, who broke the color barrier in the American League a few months later and also had a Hall of Fame career, gets virtually none. That's always the way it is, finance. You might call it "The Charles W. Sweeney/Buzz Aldrin Phenomenon". (...and who was Charles W. Sweeney, you might ask?...that was the guy who piloted the B-29 named "Bockscar" over Nagasaki in 1945)

>To take perhaps the most blatant example, the idea that Jackie Robinson would have stood frozen in place at home plate while watching his home run barely make it over the wall has got to be about the most ahistorical piece of crap I've ever seen in a baseball movie this side of The Babe Ruth Story. In 1947 that display of narcisscism would have turned even his greatest fans against him, as showboating like that was blessedly many decades in the future. Yep, it is a shame an anachronism such as that would be in this film. (...reminds me of the seemingly little remembered and now seldom practiced advice Vince Lombardi is said to have told his players on the gridiron: "When you get in the end zone, act like you've been there before!")

Anybody Drink Drew's During "The Essentials"?

Yep, maybe Iz, and I do get the significance of the "15" year thing also, however once again...unless it was found to be "detrimental" to their ratings to have you folks do it that one time, I wonder why this hasn't been tried again since you and the others did it in '09? (...btw...once again, I'm sorry I missed you and the rest of the folks that lavenderblue said hosted with Bob O back then...if you don't mind me askin', what films did you pick?) -

Thanks for the further clarification on this, cal. However once again, I wonder why TCM hasn't seen fit to do somethin' like this since then? What...maybe "too inside" for the average TCM viewers who don't participate at this website? And thus, the first time it was tried it didn't draw enough ratings to those nights? And thus again, possibly confirming my earlier supposition that the vast viewing public are only drawn to these sort of "special programings" because of the celebrity's "name recognition"? (...hmmmm...I wonder how one could find out from some TCM exec IF my "poorer ratings" guess here IS the reason this hasn't been tried since '09?) -
So Fred, in other words...OR maybe as Alfonso Bedoya might've said... "Oomph?! We don't need no stinkin' Oomph!"

This is one I really want to go see. Btw, does anyone here remember seeing the 1990 made-of-TV-movie titled "The Court-Martial of Jackie Robinson", starring that very good actor Andre Braugher? I remember liking it a lot, but after all this time the specifics of the film are rather sketchy, other than it takes place during WWII and when Lt. Jackie Robinson was disciplined for doing the same thing that Rosa Parks would be heralded for doing years later.

>You know who I'd love to see sit down with Robert Osborne as a guest programmer for a night of his favorite films? Our own markbeckauf of the weekly grooving reports! I am sure it would not be dull nor would it be an evening of the same old same old! Yep, good suggestion, calvinnme! But, ya know who I'D like to see doin' this? RICH...otherwise known as "scsu1975" in these here parts. And I'll tell ya why! Nobody, and I mean NOBODY is more cleverly hilarious around here than is our boy Rich, and when he graces us with his next installment of that "Juvenile Delinquent" thread of his!!! (...yep, I'd LOVE to see him sittin' across from Bob O. and discussing his lineup of films like, say, "Hot Rods to Hell", "Kitten with a Whip" and/or maybe "College Confidential"!!!) LOL -

>Dargo and Sepia,I don't think you guys were on the bds. a few years ago, when Cinemaven, Mongo, Filmgoddess, Kyle, lzcutter, Filmlover and some other frequent posters( I forget now who else,so please forgive me if you guys are reading this) were Guest Programmers for an evening. They all did a Great job picking their favorite films and discussing them with RO. It was a wonderful evening.(I think it may have been more than 1 evening) Wow, I didn't know this, lavender. I'm sorry I missed this. Every one of the names you mentioned has always impressed me with their knowledgeable postings around here. I wonder why TCM hasn't made this, at the very least, an annual event? -
Strangers on a Train - what would you choose?

>I'll swipe Dobbs' goods if someone will toss my Captain's palm tree overboard. LOL I don't think anyone's gonna top that one here anyway! (...good one, Mr.R!) -
Psst...dark. I'm pretty sure finance was just kiddin' there. (...well THAT and maybe he's just a little mad at himself that I came up with the "Stackedicello" thing before HE did!)
-
One of the greatest improvisational comics ever. Loved his ability to flesh out those wacky characters of his. As a kid, I don't recall my father ever laughing any harder in life than at Jonathan's antics on that old Zenith TV set of ours. (...R.I.P. funny man)
-
>She has said that she will not stand for the next scheduled election in 2015, Well then, she's certainly not alone in her feelings THERE, anyway! 'Cause I "can't stand" ANY election when it rolls around THESE here parts anymore EITHER!!! (...uh huh...ESPECIALLY all those freakin' mind-numbing, facts-challenged 30 second ads they run on my TV set during that time...and I got a feelin' I'm not alone here, eh Mr.Froy?!!)
-
Well, I CERTAINLY hope by that "FRAT boy" remark you're NOT referring to MY brand of humor here, dp! 'Cause I'll have you know that not ONLY do I have absolutely NO years of higher education under my belt, BUT even if I HAD, I would have NEVER joined ANY group which would have accepted ME as a member! (...yeah yeah, I know...what can I say...I LOVE that old Groucho line, and'll steal it in a moment's notice any chance I get!)
-
OH...btw...I forgot to mention that there HAVE of course been occasions were it's been deemed socially acceptable to celebrate one's demise...such as Groucho dancing the Charleston over Hilter's grave, and after a certain compound in Abbottabad(not named after Lou's old comedy partner, I hear) was raided by Navy Seal Team 6. (...but other than THOSE instances and maybe a few others which don't readily spring to mind here, I understand we the living are all supposed to act like the recently deceased never made a mistake in their lives...it's just the "classy" thing to do, ya see!!!) ROFL
-
>But I STILL feel Glenda's speech would have been better suited BEFORE Ms. Thatcher died, rather than immediately AFTER. Ahem...Sepia...5'll getcha 10(either in good ol' American Greenbacks OR in Pound sterling) that Glenda has been rantin' about Maggie for YEARS! THIS whole latest rhubarb just boils down to that old thing that many people cling to that "One is suppose to speak reverentially of the newly deceased", THAT'S all! YOU know! Kinda like THIS...

Yep, I've always thought that instead of these "names" telling us how they "feel" about the movies that are shown on these sorts of "special programmings", I would rather see Bob sit across from somebody around HERE(i.e., a frequent contributor to these very boards) and one who REALLY knows the ends and outs of these classic films and who could INTELLIGENTLY discuss them with Mr.Osborne. Aaah, but then again of course, the vast viewing public wouldn't know our own FredCDobbs, TopBilled, TomH, Dothery, SansFin, and a whole host of OTHERS around here who's names don't immediately spring to my mind, from Adam's Off Ox, and thus of course this'll never happen. Yep, people wanna see those "stars" no matter HOW much they might be out of their element, huh! (...btw...thank you Sheldon Leonard wherever you are for that "Adam's Off Ox" line) -
I know...but I've always heard you ladies LIKED the "bad boys"! (...so what's a guy to do, HUH?!)
-
True...about the "agenda" thing, anyway. And yep, I have to admit I kinda got caught up in that with that whole "agnostic" thing I shouldn't have posted, and not only in this thread, but maybe more importantly at this website. My apologies. (...though I AIN'T gonna apologize for my "Stackedicello" joke, 'cause THAT one IS germane to this thread..SO THERE!!!)
-
Then maybe this'll help ya grasp what's going on in these sort of "RIP" threads when some folks seem to "have fun" in 'em, lavender... Ya know how those folks down in New Orleans on the way to the cemetery play funeral dirges, but THEN after the the deceased is buried, those same folks march down the street playin' all that upbeat Dixieland stuff while jumpin' around and kinda partyin'? Well, the NEXT time some of us folks HERE start into all the "reverential" stuff like this and APPEAR to be "disrespectful", JUST think of us as doin' THAT!!!! (...yep, I'm thinkin' this might just help put to rest some of these feelings of "disgust" you apparently feel when this sorta thing happens around here)
-
Couldn't agree more with ya there, willbe. But then again we're not those "studious" types who so often appear to prefer to keep a more, let us say, "academic" approach to the proceedings around here, huh. (...not that there's no place for THAT kinda thing TOO, ya understand)
-
Yep...as Sepia (I think it was) alluded to a while back. (...and before this thread went ALL OVER the place...which of course never bothers me...or finance...or Hibi...or...)
-
Actually dp, I'm thinkin' it would've been more "ironic" if Annette's real last name was somethin' like "Stackedicello".
-
>Hibi wrote:LOL. She's getting a state funeral too. >And Argentina is not invited. Now I KNOW there's GOTTA be a way for me to now slip in some lame reference to that "Don't Cry For Me" song in "Evita" here, but for the LIFE of me I just can't figure out HOW?!!!! (...I HATE when this happens!!!!)

Yep dark, I think you're onto somethin' there. Though I have far less memories of Donna's program as compared to "FKB", I do seem to recall Betz's character always striking me as less "fleshed out" than that of Robert Young's. -
OH! That's actually pretty good! Yep, good ol' Father O'Malley, as played by the guy who reportedly once he would return home to his kids after a hard day at the studio, MADE SURE that his sons would know how to throw a baseball...OR ELSE!!!! **** (...though of course this COULD have all just been little Gary's faulty memory here, huh...eeh, who really knows, huh...I mean I still like Der Bingle no matter what anybody says!)
