My guesses...left to right... Joan Fontaine, Una Merkel, and I have no idea. -
Sounds good, dp! How about a toast to seal the deal? (...so, is Merlot okay with YOU anyway???) LOL

Absolutely, Char. That's a film which one doesn't have to speak the "local lingo" in order to love. (...and I think another one from the same country would be De Sica's The Bicycle Thief, just to pull another suggestion out of the ol' hat) -
Yeah, maybe Hibi, but I have to say that I disagree with some of the opinions that have been expressed in this thread about the special effects being "dated". I think they still actually hold up pretty darn well, overall.
-
>Hi Dargo. I hope you had a great Cesar Chavez Day yesterday! LOL Thanks Fred! Yep, I sure did! In FACT, just in Cesar's honor yesterday, I stopped by the Javelina Vineyards on Page Springs Road just south o' here and helped pick a few grapes for the nice people there! (...you haven't LIVED until you've tried their Merlot!!!)
-
> "OH ****!" LOL Somehow all these years I must've missed that line of dialogue, Fred, 'cause I was always pretty sure ol' C.B. while known for juicin' up the visuals in his films, was somewhat loathe to use THAT kinda language!
-
"...a more dramatic fashion", ya say James?! Why, whatever do ya MEAN? (...I THOUGHT we were talkin' about "Cecil B. DeMille" here, dude?!!!) LOL
-
>Jane Greer choosing a hat for the Easter Parade? I hope not. Well, ya know Joe, you COULD post a bunch of pictures of the sultry Miss Greer with a basket of kumquats on top her head, and I wouldn't mind one little BIT ! (...Happy Easter, ol' buddy!)

I was just pondering the actor Frank Lovejoy here, and got to thinking how for whatever reason he's always sort of reminded me of an American version of British actor Jack Hawkins, what with both of them often playing the same type of roles...the second male leads and often the "Company Commander" in war films. And so, who comes to YOUR mind is this regard, folks? (...oh, and I forgot to add...all respondents to this thread will be welcomed to reply to this query by EITHER the inclusion of that superfluous letter "u" in certain words that the Brits still use for whatever reason OR in the American lexicon, as this will have absolutely NO bearing upon the appropriateness of any and all responses...and this of course includes you folks up there north of the 49th Parallel TOO!!!) Your suggestion of Elmer B's The Great Escape score was a great addition to this thread, Gorch. And, your write-up in support of it was nicely worded, also. (...and NOW the ONLY problem I'm havin' here is gettin' that song outta my HEAD!!!) -

>1) A lobster dropped into boiling water exhibited the same response as to a flash of bright light and death occurred with no obvious pain response. Hmmmm...I wonder if they also see their grandmother's face and hear a voice saying: "Come toward the light!"??? (...and if they DO, then maybe I'll just stick to the scallops on the menu from now on) -

I was of course kiddin' about that whole "Pee Wee Heirman/German" thing here, gagman, but tell me, am I correct in assuming that the lady on the left is a young Joan Blondell? (...'cause that's who I think SHE is anyway) -
>Having never actually heard a 12th century mongolian badass I just don't have much of a problem with Duke's delivery. Yeah, maybe FBT, but five'll getcha ten those 12th century Mongols didn't have that halting American Southwestern TWANG lilting through their voices like the Duke had anyway...PILGRIM!!! LOL
-
Well FBT, I can't speak for James here, but the few times I'VE tried watchin' that flick, I just couldn't get past the Duke's famous speech pattern while he's tryin' to play that Mongol...PILGRIM!!! (...and sorry, but that little Boris Badenov mustache he sports in the thing ALSO doesn't come close to distracting me enough from that voice o' his either...PILGRIM!)
-
Didn't TCM feature Cregar a while back in some manner? I seem to recall them playing a few of this movies back-to-back-to-back and Bob Osborne's introductions to them, and where I first heard of the circumstances of his death.

Re the "Thundershirts", Char... Yep, we got Moose one of those last year during the Monsoon season out this way(mucho thunder and lightning during those, ya know), and it seemed to work only so-so on him. (...and re the "Jack Paar" thing...you're right, that was his signature line alright...I had forgotten about that) -

Yep finance, I hear they still have phone booths out there in L.A. (...but ONLY 'cause I hear "Superman 6" is presently in the pre-production planning stages, and Mayor Villaraigosa will do ANYTHING to keep those movie biz folks from scurrying up to Toronto or Vancouver, ya know!) -

Wow MissW. I guess this whole(and contrary to Punxsutawney Phil's...or I suppose in YOUR case, Wiarton Willie's prediction) late coming of Spring up your way is startin' to get to ya lately, huh...err...EH?! LOL -

LOL Yeah, well, it could be worse ya know, Sepia. Ya see, in OUR case, when this pack of coyotes we have livin' around here starts their yelpin' and howlin' at about 1am almost every night lately, which ISN'T so bad, but THEN when our dog Moose starts yelpin' and howlin' from inside our bedroom in unison with 'em...well, try sleepin' through THAT if ya can!!! (...and I kid you NOT here) -

>Superstitious remedies exist in the world of belief, and not science. We still see this mistake with cause and affect today; look at all the deception on the internet. Hey, there's a $7 trick to make wrinkles to disappear! Boy, have you got THAT right Char, though unfortunately in MY case, I've ONLY discovered the truth of that statement fairly recently...'cause no matter how many times I bury my voodoo doll of Donald Trump, I just can't seem to make the guy disappear! (...and don't EVEN get me started about all these useless "Male-Enhancement" products I've got sittin' around this place that those porn stars on TV absolutely guaranteed to WORK!!!) LOL -
Oh, that face, that fabulous face. Whose is it?
Dargo2 replied to georgiegirl's topic in General Discussions
Oh yeah. I think I recognize the guy there at least. That's Pee Wee HEIRMAN...a guy who starred in many of those German Expressionism type flicks back in the '30s. (...so, am I RIGHT???) -
Wow GF, and here I thought this only happened to ME tonight! 'Cept MY cable company said TCM was gonna show somethin' titled "Dr. Socrates D.D.S."...and when I hit info button it said the plot was gonna be about some dude in a toga who worked on the pearly whites of the ancient Athenians! (...weird, HUH?!)

Well keats, look at it this way then...while I agree that to our 21st Century sensibilities this would seem extremely barbaric, you have to remember that Rossellini's film was based in the 17th Century and when these sorts of practices were commonplace. (...but yeah, I KNOW...then WHY the h*ll are there STILL barbaric morons in the 21st Century who do things like shooting rhinos for their horns and JUST because it's supposedly a male aphrodisiac???...well, sorry, but I DON'T have answer for ya about THAT, 'cause that's STILL a freakin' mystery to ME!!!) -
