  1. >Has anyone ever heard the term "tar baby" used as a racial slur, either in general or toward a specific child or person? Ummmm...uh huh. THIS time anyway.... LOL
  2. Oh, and btw everyone...nobody as yet in this thing has answered my earlier question about all the laughter on Ferguson's show. And so once again...IS that a freakin' LAUGH TRACK they play after almost EVERYTHING the guy utters or WHAT??? (...AND once again, don't get me wrong here, I think the guy IS funny, but GEESH...not EVERY freakin' thing he says is THAT funny!!!!!)
  3. >Conan is also funny...but his off the wall humor didn't seem to fit into what long time "TONIGHT" viewers expect. And while those long time viewers accept changes in who hosts the show, they prefer it if the VIBE stays intact. Actually Sepia, word pretty much was that the primary reason for Conan's poor initial ratings was Leno's poor ratings earlier on in the 10pm time slot, and when NBC in a cost-cutting measure tried Leno's show out in prime-time in that failed attempt. Yep, the whole "Lead-In" factor played a major part in Conan's "failure". In fact, word also was that most all of NBC's affiliates' 11 o'clock local News programs also had quite a drop in their ratings at the same time.
  4. Aah! Now that you mention it slayton, you're right. I forgot to mentioned that program showing classics that was broadcast on one of the network channels. However, now that you've brought it up, I probably best remember KNXT's "The Late Show" a little more, and its theme song: The Late Show Relax, enjoy a snack, and watch the Late Show Channel Two is proud to show, the greatest of stars, here on the great Late Show (...remember THAT?...I bet ya do, huh!)
  5. Well, growing up in L.A. in the '50s and '60s and where we had 7 local broadcast stations, 3 of 'em network affiliates, but maybe more importantly, the other 4 being independent stations with their necessity of showing "old movies" because of their lack of access to first-run network TV programming, I would say I've owed my appreciation of classic films since childhood to the following sources: KTLA channel-5, KHJ-TV(now KCAL)channel-9, KTTV channel-11 and KCOP channel-13. (...sure hope this answers your question, my friend)
  6. >I want to hear from you. Has anyone recreated a movie with dolls or action figures? "Well now, you may laugh here Pilgrim, but I used to take my collection of 64 kachina dolls and reenact the battle scenes in Pappy's 'Fort Apache' at my house in Newport Beach. The only problem was Hank Fonda said he wouldn't join in 'cause he said he thought that was just too weird!" (...sorry Char, I couldn't resist)
  7. Thanks for the heads-up here, Andy! I'll be sure to seek that film out over there on FMC, as it does sound very entertaining.
  8. You're absolutely correct, Scottman. You didn't pass any kind of judgement for or against these films. But hey, I had to use SOMEBODY'S post to poke a little fun at willbe's infatuation with Snidely...DOH!...I mean Warren here, ya know! (...and besides, willbe took it like the trooper I know she is)
  9. >I think this is more a matter of common sense than politics. Whatever. Not really, Froy my man. That issue in these United States has become so intertwined since the very establishment of this Repulic so that as to attempt to separate both of those conceits of "common sense" and "politics" is now nearly impossible, and as I'm sure you really know. BUT, as you ALSO said..."Whatever", and thus lets move on. Unfortunately after I watched Europa '51 last week and late at night, I forgot to record Journey to Italy which beforehand I had noticed after reading the DirectTV guide co-starred Mr. Sanders, and who almost ANY films is made better with his participation, of course. Hopefully TCM will show it again very soon.
  10. Yeah, well I DO hear that some folks are sayin' you can eat ALL the Ben & Jerry's ya want in the Afterlife and STILL not gain a single pound! (...so yeah, ya MIGHT have a point there, alright!)
  11. >who else is "genius" in cellluloid? Well, ya know gummball, I always thought Robert Wise did a pretty good job with the ol' celluloid when he edited Citizen Kane!!! (...oh...sorry...you said "IN" not "WITH", huh!...never mind then)
  12. One more thing to add here...and it's regarding Fallon... Now don't shoot me here BUT I actually see a lot of Carson in Fallon. The primary problem Fallon seems to have is that he's always so "impressed" with his guests and gushes over them WAY too much in sort of a "I'm your biggest fan and not worthy to be on the same stage as you" manner. And whereas, Carson always acted as a peer and at the minium an equal to this guests. And so, IF Fallon can ever get over his "little puppy" act, I think he MIGHT make a decent replacement for Leno. And re Ferguson, I have just one question here: Is that a freakin' LAUGHTRACK they constantly play everytime he utters something or WHAT? 'Cause while I think he's an intelligent and somewhat funny guy, not EVERYTHING he says is worth all that laughter he seems to garner on his show!!!
  13. Yeah, Bradshaw IS a great guest who can be relied upon to deliver some funny off-the-cuff material in an inverview-type setting, but sorry, there is NO way the guy could do topical opening comedy monologues..the mainstay of late might talk shows. Yep, while Terry might have been great back in the day at reading the Defense on the gridiron as he walked up behind the Center, I have serious doubts that the guy could read the cue-cards proficiently enough and with the right comedic timing to be successful at this. (...and btw, while I have met and talked with Jay a number of times at various motorcycle meets in SoCal, and always found him a very likable fellow, AND while I've never met David Letterman in person but would put my money on his being much less an affable sort in the fresh, Letterman and his program has ALWAYS been much better at being "edgier" and "hip" than has Leno and his program...and thus the very reason NBC picked Jay over Dave back in the day, because they knew the less "edgier" one is, the wider a so-called mainstream audience it will potentially pull in...but you guys already knew that, didn't ya!)
  14. Which was another bone-of-contention over in that IMDb discussion I mentioned reading below. Yep, another point that a few of those who took exception to this film made was that it's very unclear if the story took place in either the Antebellum or Postbellum eras.
  15. Wait a minute here, willbe! I thought the original post here was about a film starring "your future husband" in the afterlife, Mr. Warren (aka "Snidely Whiplash") William? And so I must ask here: Why are you defending Scottman's apparent contention that watching Mr. William slap around Joan B. in this movie isn't acceptable??? (...wait!...could it be that YOU are actually lookin' FORWARD to havin' Snidely, err I mean Warren slap YOU around in that afterlife TOO???!!!) LOL
  16. At the risk of further threatening the longevity of this thread, Mr. Froy, let us just say that you are DEFINITELY "preaching to the choir" here, my friend! 'Cause, I'VE been sayin' EXACTLY what YOU just said for YEARS now, though try as I might and as often as I "preach" this, there are STILL so many people in this country who actually believe the fallacy that I've just pretty much given up tryin' to make 'em "see the light", and thus NOW just enjoy makin' fun of 'em and their notion that their little arsenal is "the only thing keepin' 'em free in America"! Yep, I laugh my **** off at ALL of 'em now, which I suppose ALSO helps keep my sanity!!! (...though NOW I think we better CHANGE the subject here, 'cause as I'm SURE you know, the longer THIS kinda talk goes on, poor ol' Rossellini's chances of bein' further discussed go DOWN with each and every mention of this current sidetracking)
  17. Wouldn't be a very young Robert Young there, would it Dothery?
  18. By Jove! I do believe we have one Basil Radford there, my good lady!
  19. >Very true. It would take millions of people of outstanding courage acting together to stand up to a dictatorship, and even then it might not change things, as they would be outgunned. Well then...I suppose there goes THAT 2nd Amendment argument right out the ol' window, EH Mr.Froy?!!!! ROFL (...sorry Mr. Michael our local Admin around here...I JUST couldn't resist this one, THAT'S all, 'cause Mr.Froy just set me up too perfectly, ya see...PLEASE forgive me...as I continue to Roll On the Floor Laughing here!!!!!!!)
  20. >How about a rib joint called The Sides of March? Hmmm...yeah. That sounds good for lunch, I suppose. Do ya need a ride there? (...'cause..ahem.."I'm your Vehicle, babe"...yep, "I'll take ya anywhere ya wanna go!")
  21. Sepia, regarding the whole controversy about this film... After reading the input in this thread so far, and figuring there might be some further discussion about this issue to be had elsewhere, I decided to so over to IMDb and read the thoughts of some others about why this film has now become so controversial. The people over there had some rather interesting and divergent thoughts which I thought were mostly presented in an intelligent and respectful manner. And so, here's what seems to be the crux of the argument here: One side felt it wrong to present to children(especially) the character of Uncle Remus, who though otherwise depicted as "wise" is also depicted as "subservient" to his white adult peers. The other side felt that this whole issue of Uncle Remus' subservience is overblown, and that the Aesopian lessons with the Old South flavor he departs to the children should override this concern. I don't know. I suppose I can see both sides to this argument having some validity, but do tend to side with the latter opinion. (...though then again, maybe THAT'S 'cause I've never felt much societal pressure to be "subservient" to anyone...'cept maybe to my wife occasionally!)
  22. Well, I noticed they made a point of flyin' over the famed Hollywood and Vine intersection, but I sure wish they wouldn't flown over MY favorite old L.A. intersection! And what intersection would THAT be, you ask?! Why, THIS one... ...Pico and Sepulveda, of course! (...if any of you out there don't "get this", then you also probably have never heard of "Dr.Demento", a Sunday night mainstray of L.A. Alternative Rock radio station KMET back in the '70s, and who played a lot of really rare and funny old novelty songs on his program...though I DO believe the "Doctor" was syndicated nationwide)
  23. Yep, there's a good resemblance there I'd say, KD. Now, I have to say I wasn't familar with Greta Baldwin here, so I Googled her and found out that she's an opera singer. (...no word though if she ALSO suffers from the famous "Baldwin family anger management" issues...though she COULD be from a different clan, I suppose) LOL
  24. No need for a larger pic here, dark. I'm pretty sure that that's Imogene Coca in the old sitcom, "It's About Time". (...right?)
