>Which is true of any totalitarian society. You could probably say that the Germans were more morally complicit in allowing Hitler to rise in the first place than they were in not preventing him from carrying out his program once his power had been consolodated. Yeah, maybe so Andy, but remember, post-WWI/World Depression era Germany was in such extreme political and financial turmoil and disarray that it makes these whole present day American "Red State v Blue State" and "The Great Recession" things we've been goin' through look like just one big "Kumbaya"! LOL And so, I think it's somewhat understandable that the people of a country, maybe almost ANY country, that is so out of control and divided would sit on their hands and allow some egomaniacal but seemingly charismatic and forceful leader to rise among them and allow such a freakin' jerk to rule over 'em in hopes of a possible better future, or at the very least, attain some sense of "order" out of utter chaos. (...not that I'm givin' those "Krauts" a "free pass" here, mind you!!!) LOL again
-
>What is the word for what a butler does? Does he "buttle"? Now finance...must you ALWAYS bring George Brent into EVERYTHING around here???!!! LOL (...oh and yeah...according to Dictionary.com, the word "buttle" is a non-standard/slang verb meaning: to work or serve as a butler)

Yep, and yet another good point. It's the winner of the WAR who usually gets to write the History books, NOT usually the winner of the battle, alright. Though of course over time, even the losers will usually get THEIR two cents in too, ya know. Case in point, the film in question here. (...and as such is ALSO usually a good thing IF one is interested in learning of all those "shades of grey" in history, and NOT just the B&W "party line")
-
Yep, good point. Ya know, considering all the previous Tinseltown "Custer" flims made before this one and where Custer is portrayed as being so strongly courageous such as in They Died With Their Boots On, well MAYBE all those earlier efforts could be classified under that RARE heading of: "History written by the LOSERS!" (...well, the losing side of the battle of The Little Bighorn anyway, eh?!)
-
And yep Sepia, I think you're correct about this film having a "thinly veiled anti-Viet Nam theme", and of course similar in that regard to the film and TV series M*A*S*H.
-
>'Cause only white people can be listened to. Well, NOT to sound like some of those self-appointed "Anti-PC" folks out there, dark my friend, but ya MIGHT be able to add here..."or made fun of, now days!" (...as per Mulligan's over-the-top rendition of "Yellow Hair" Custer...funny as it was!)

What's your favorite line(s) from a Western?

LOL Yep Nora, that's a great exchange too. In fact, there are a number of great exchanges and bits of dialogue in that great oater, isn't there! Another one of my favorites is when Destry tells Frenchy: "I'll bet you've got kind of a lovely face under all that paint, huh? Why don't you wipe it off someday and have a good look - and figure out how you can live up to it." -and which of course sets up the penultimate scene where Frenchy, while dying in Destry's arms after taking a bullet for him, asks him to kiss her goodbye, but first stops him while she takes her forearm to wipe off her lipstick. (...that scene gets me every time!) -
Wow! Sounds like you rolled "snake-eyes" there, dude! Though, I THOUGHT there was now some kinda "rule" about keepin' the stuff that's goin' on in Sin City under your hat??? (...sorry, couldn't resist ...and sorry to hear of your plight here...have you considered switchin' to DirectTV?) Edited by: Dargo2 on Mar 18, 2013 11:32 AM

Yep, bottom line for ME here is: If these promotions pertain in any manner at all to classic films, such as some new book about the subject or in this case a modern film based upon a classic film, then personally I don't see the "problemo" here! AND, as someone else mentioned earlier, if TCM receives some sort of "cross-promotional" financing benefits from these sorts of promos and which helps keep ALL the films shown on TCM without commercial breaks, then I say GOOD!. (...I mean how many times can one watch the very SAME fillers where some now deceased actor or actress is reminiscening about that movie they were in back in the day, HUH?!)
-
Yeah, well, I guess I pretty much agree with you folks here...well EXCEPT for the slow-mo Flat Track motorcycle racing scenes in Bruce Brown's On Any Sunday. (...'cause I can watch THOSE scenes 'till, as they say, "the cows come home"!!!)
-
Well, how exactly DID you folks expect ANY guy who looks like THIS would treat women anyway, HUH??? (...I mean there WAS a reason Jay Ward drew his creation to look like that, ya know!...and besides, at LEAST poor Joan isn't tied to TRAINTRACKS in this movie anyway, RIGHT?!!!)

From: Destry Rides Again Kent: I collect Deputy Sheriff's guns. Whenever I meet a new deputy, I ask him for his gun and I ask him real nice. Tom Destry Jr.: I'm sorry, Mr. Kent. I'm afraid this here's one gun your collection's going to be minus. Kent: You mean I'm going to have to take it? Tom Destry Jr.: If you can. Now, hold on! Hold on. Don't get excited here. I'm just tryin' to tell you that I ain't got any guns. You see if I woulda had a gun then, why, one of us might have been hurt and it might be me. I wouldn't want that to happen... would I? -
What's your favorite line(s) of dialogue from a horror movie?

"Haven't you noticed how nothing in this house seems to move until you look away and then you just... catch something out of the corner of your eye?" ...and... "God! God! Whose hand was I holding?" -both from 1963's The Haunting -
>It's too bad Alfred Hitchcock didn't direct any of the sequels. He would have probably had Gill Man find a blonde Julia Adams, want her to dye her hair brunette and wear a bathing suit exactly like the one in this film! LOL Good one, Tom! (...yep, I can see it all now: "Aqua-go"!...and Hitch's cameo would have been a guy running to catch the boat as it powers away from the dock!) --------------------------------------- Btw, I see you added the picture and the title "Vertgill" after I first viewed your post. Yep, I think I like that better than my "Aqua-go"!!! --------------------------------------- OH! And one MORE thing here...you're right! NO actress EVER looked better in one of those one-piece bathing suits than Julie/Julia did there!!!...nope, not EVEN Esther!!!!) Aah, NOW I getcha. Yep, maybe that's why I've never cared if I've ever watched any of the sequels, either! (...no Julie/Julia...or "Betty" as she was also known early on)
-
I think Malachi first came to my attention more in the late-'60s as the character Noah Bain, who was Robert Wagner's boss in the TV series "It Takes a Thief". And you're right, he had a great commanding voice. (...RIP, Mr.Throne)
-
That's pretty much the mark of all great movie monster creatures, isn't it Tom? The idea that by the end of the film, they somehow have instilled in us at least a modicum sense of sorrow at their demise.
-
Hey, Tom! Doncha think a better caption for this one might be: "First up, The June Taylor Dancers, and then mmmMMMmmm, away we GO!"
-
LOL! Great addition to the thread here, MissW. Now, while I think I've only ever watched the original(always loved Julie Adams), I gotta say after watchin' that video and seein' Ol' Fish Face wearin' a Brooks Brothers suit in what appears to be the last sequel, it seems this franchise just MIGHT'VE "jumped the shark" by THAT time , EH?!)
-
>It just didn't seem that compelling to me. No sense of order or proceedure. I don't believe even back then in those regions that courtroom proceedures were that lax or disorganized. Now Sepia, please don't take ALL the fun out of it for me the next time I watch Samuel S. Hinds as Judge Slade here in Destry Rides Again as he gives the following "judicial instructions": "According to the provisions of the statutes of our territorial commonwealth, you gentleman of the jury have been selected as representative citizens of our fair community. We want to see that the public's faith is justified. So when you boys retire to consider a verdict, stay out awhile. Mr. Kent will see that you are plentifuly provided with liquid refreshments. And after you have deliberated sufficiently, weighed all the evidence fair and square, and brought in a verdict of not guilty, you will be amply rewarded. You understand?" (...'cause dude, I love THAT movie!)

>Many articles of women's clothing can be VERY uncomfortable. Yeah dp! Ya got THAT right! (...and though very flattering, those stays on these latest edition Victoria Secret Merry Widow corsets can ESPECIALLY be a REAL problem sometimes, huh?!...OUCH!!!) LOL

Great ST Pattys Day Movies on TCM Sunday.... Happy St Pattys Day !

Yep! And it was an excellent choice as a side dish with their..ahem..Sweet & Sauerbraten Pork, too! (...which as I recall was on their "Column-A" menu!) -
>Shame on Ester Williams for revealing that, especially since Chandler's daughters were exposed to such gossip. Well Joe, then this must explain why your caption read, "Jeff Chandler and Angie Dickinson making eyes at each other"...and NOT, "Jeff Chandler complimenting Angie Dickinson on her taste in dresses" then, eh?! (...sorry, couldn't resist!)
