Yep, I agree with ya here, finance. Not one of his better roles, alright.
And, I was never a big fan of his turn as Douglas MacArthur, either...though maybe some of this can be attributed to the thought that the entire movie pales in comparison to that other film about another supercharged ego of a General made a just a few years earlier.

Ya see, in OUR case, when this pack of coyotes we have livin' around here starts their yelpin' and howlin' at about 1am almost every night lately, which ISN'T so bad, but THEN when our dog Moose starts yelpin' and howlin' from inside our bedroom in unison with 'em...well, try sleepin' through THAT if ya can!!!

Oh yeah. I think I recognize the guy there at least. That's Pee Wee HEIRMAN...a guy who starred in many of those German Expressionism type flicks back in the '30s.

'Cept MY cable company said TCM was gonna show somethin' titled "Dr. Socrates D.D.S."...and when I hit info button it said the plot was gonna be about some dude in a toga who worked on the pearly whites of the ancient Athenians!

Well keats, look at it this way then...while I agree that to our 21st Century sensibilities this would seem extremely barbaric, you have to remember that Rossellini's film was based in the 17th Century and when these sorts of practices were commonplace.
(...but yeah, I KNOW...then WHY the h*ll are there STILL barbaric morons in the 21st Century who do things like shooting rhinos for their horns and JUST because it's supposedly a male aphrodisiac???...well, sorry, but I DON'T have answer for ya about THAT, 'cause that's STILL a freakin' mystery to ME!!!)

Yep, you're correct Fred. The term has also come to be a code word for "small town America" too, and maybe not just those towns and cities not near one of the coasts.

Well, the ONLY reason I brought that whole "True Believers" thing into this (and btw, maybe you don't know this, but the term "True Believers" can be correctly applied to not ONLY those holding hard and fast beliefs about religion, but to those who hold hard and fast beliefs about almost ANY topic under the sun...but I digress) was because of the method Jake used to disagree with Sepia's contention that Richard Burton's acting was subpar in this film, and then Jake's whole put-down "you must be a sage" thing and pretty much "end of discussion", and NOT some reasonable and rational counterpoints to Sepia's contention.

Yeah, maybe, but you probably have ALSO noticed two things here, Fred. One being that my online signature around here doesn't say "Dargo in Sedona", AND that the few times I have "bragged" about livin' in Sedona, its always about the scenic beauty of the place and NEVER that the denizen of this place by virtue their choice in residence hold some sort of special place in the eyes of God and thus by association have just that little bit extra hold on the concept of "righteousness". And of which, has always been the impression I've gotten from many of Jake's postings around here.
Though once again, I SUPPOSE I could just be misreadin' a little too much into all that, huh...though somethin' tellin' me I'm not.
(...and now, what say we get off THIS and get back to talkin' about "The Robe", which as I said I'm lookin' forward to seein' again this weekend after all these years)

Eeh! Now Fred, after all this time, I would've thought that you would've picked up on the idea that it's okay with ME if people wanna make fun of ANY of my "beliefs"! It's all boils down to HOW they do it, 'cause I HOPE you would have noticed that I LOVE hearing opinions which differ from mine, UNLESS the person doing it RESORTS to the hackneyed use of the ol' "Well, THAT'S what I believe and so ALL further discussion is now OVER" tactic!
And, regarding your bringing up the issue of "Regionalism" here:

I absolutely AGREE with on this, however PLEASE remember that whenever I tweak the nose of our gentlemen "in the Heartland", it is almost ALWAYS because of HIS continually overt pressing of the point that HIS beloved "Heartland" is somehow more "virtuous" than any OTHER part of this great country of ours.
(...so, maybe talk to HIM about THAT, eh?!)

Well, as I recall(though I'm actually lookin' forward to seein' it again, as it's been MANY years since my last viewing of it) it DOES contain a scene with the crucifiction of Jesus, RIGHT?! Yep, I'm pretty sure that that's where the "robe" in the story comes from, RIGHT?! And so, while yes, it's storyline may not be primarily based upon biblical passages, the crux of the plot is based upon the notion that "Christianity can save a soul from eternal damnation", RIGHT?!
(...oh, and that a guy who begins to believe in its power can ALSO get the virtuous Christian gal by the end of the story TOO, right?!...YOU know, that whole "Quo Vadis" kinda thing!...but like I said, it's been many o' year since my last viewing of it, and so I COULD be wrong here)

, that was ME who STILL cracks up every time I think of that Easter night at the folks' house, though I have to admit your point was well taken about how we all tend to defend the films we all hold dear. Case in point, the gentleman right down there below me here who seems to take exception with your opinion of Mr. Burton's work in this film. LOL(...though I defy ANYONE to find a false or laughable note in MY favorite all-time films: "The Apartment" and "The Best Years of Our Lives"...go ahead, TRY!)

(...just remember one thing the next time somebody around here bad-mouths the guy...the TCM.com boards are chalked full of folks who think almost ANY film, ANY actor, ANY movie music composer, etc, etc, etc, who appeared on the Hollywood scene AFTER ol' Louis B. Mayer was dead and buried, is by their very definition "inferior" to those which were working during the time ol' Louis' was runnin' the show out there in Tinseltown!...yep, as long as you remember THIS, you'll be JUST fine, amigo!!!)

Well, all I can say here is that Jay in that role always kinda reminded me of the ol' "Center Square" on a certain ol' game show.
Uh huh, 'cause I always thought Paul Lynne might've been able to do THAT whole kinda Roman Emperor routine TOO!
(...not that there would be all THAT much difference in the portrayals, of course, but at least PAUL might have been able to hit the punchlines a little bit better anyway...oh...wait...these flicks weren't comedies, huh!...never mind then!)

(...btw Star, your opinion of The Robe reminded me of the time about 15 or 20 years ago when my wife and I started snickering while we watched Anne Baxter over-emoting "Oh Moses! Oh Moses" in The Ten Commandments while at my parents' house after Easter dinner...my now dearly departed mother found absolutely NO humor in our "display of irreverence" and continued to "scold" us by saying that SHE though the movie was one of the "greatest ever made"...to which I THEN responded with my impression of Billy Crystal's old comedy routine of impersonating Eddie G. Robinson saying, "M-yeah SEE?! Where's your Moses NOW, see?!...needless to say, good ol' mom found even LESS humor in THAT!!!!!)

(...but ONLY 'cause I hear "Superman 6" is presently in the pre-production planning stages, and Mayor Villaraigosa will do ANYTHING to keep those movie biz folks from scurrying up to Toronto or Vancouver, ya know!)
