You're absolutely correct, Scottman. You didn't pass any kind of judgement for or against these films.
But hey, I had to use SOMEBODY'S post to poke a little fun at willbe's infatuation with Snidely...DOH!...I mean Warren here, ya know!

(...and besides, willbe took it like the trooper I know she is)

>I think this is more a matter of common sense than politics. Whatever.
Not really, Froy my man. That issue in these United States has become so intertwined since the very establishment of this Repulic so that as to attempt to separate both of those conceits of "common sense" and "politics" is now nearly impossible, and as I'm sure you really know. BUT, as you ALSO said..."Whatever", and thus lets move on.
Unfortunately after I watched Europa '51 last week and late at night, I forgot to record Journey to Italy which beforehand I had noticed after reading the DirectTV guide co-starred Mr. Sanders, and who almost ANY films is made better with his participation, of course.
Hopefully TCM will show it again very soon.

Yeah, well I DO hear that some folks are sayin' you can eat ALL the Ben & Jerry's ya want in the Afterlife and STILL not gain a single pound!
(...so yeah, ya MIGHT have a point there, alright!)

-
LOL
I LOVE it, Mr.F!!!
And THEN of course you'd have Chumley sayin' somethin' next to him behind the counter like: "What's this Bible thing? Ya know I don't read, Rick!"
-
>who else is "genius" in cellluloid?
Well, ya know gummball, I always thought Robert Wise did a pretty good job with the ol' celluloid when he edited Citizen Kane!!!
(...oh...sorry...you said "IN" not "WITH", huh!...never mind then)
-
>The correct usage is that the president looks like the devil.
Well, ya know Sans, we COULD maybe go ask an "expert" and maybe seek a definitive answer here about THAT.
(...but I hear that ultra-rich dude with the bad comb-over and the pouty lips is MUCH too busy lately on his own show firing D-list celebrities...and besides I'm not sure even HE knows where Satan's birth certificate might be located!!!!)
ROFL!!!!!

One more thing to add here...and it's regarding Fallon...
Now don't shoot me here BUT I actually see a lot of Carson in Fallon. The primary problem Fallon seems to have is that he's always so "impressed" with his guests and gushes over them WAY too much in sort of a "I'm your biggest fan and not worthy to be on the same stage as you" manner.
And whereas, Carson always acted as a peer and at the minium an equal to this guests.
And so, IF Fallon can ever get over his "little puppy" act, I think he MIGHT make a decent replacement for Leno.
And re Ferguson, I have just one question here: Is that a freakin' LAUGHTRACK they constantly play everytime he utters something or WHAT? 'Cause while I think he's an intelligent and somewhat funny guy, not EVERYTHING he says is worth all that laughter he seems to garner on his show!!!
-
Quite alright, GG. I'm glad to read that I misunderstood your words here.
Cheers!

Yeah, Bradshaw IS a great guest who can be relied upon to deliver some funny off-the-cuff material in an inverview-type setting, but sorry, there is NO way the guy could do topical opening comedy monologues..the mainstay of late might talk shows. Yep, while Terry might have been great back in the day at reading the Defense on the gridiron as he walked up behind the Center, I have serious doubts that the guy could read the cue-cards proficiently enough and with the right comedic timing to be successful at this.
(...and btw, while I have met and talked with Jay a number of times at various motorcycle meets in SoCal, and always found him a very likable fellow, AND while I've never met David Letterman in person but would put my money on his being much less an affable sort in the fresh, Letterman and his program has ALWAYS been much better at being "edgier" and "hip" than has Leno and his program...and thus the very reason NBC picked Jay over Dave back in the day, because they knew the less "edgier" one is, the wider a so-called mainstream audience it will potentially pull in...but you guys already knew that, didn't ya!)
-
>I have lost a lot of respect for the History Channel, for this is not a correct depiction of the greatest book ever written.....
Well Gemini, as I mentioned down there somewhere, while I agree that the production values of this thing aren't the greatest and thus I also pretty much found it not worth my time, don't ya think your statement above is just a LITTLE egocentric in scope here??? 'Cause I'm pretty sure the primary reason that there was SO many different sects in just the Christian religion ALONE, is 'cause almost EVERYBODY depending upon whatever sect they decide to follow pretty much interprets the Bible slightly differently, ya know.
(...but hey, what do I know!...this is comin' to ya from a guy who grew up in the Methodist sect, but NOW has come to "believe" that while there MAY be a "God", that much too often all organized religion pretty much does is futher separate Mankind into different and often competing "tribes", and that the LAST thing Mankind needs is to be further distanced from their brothers and sisters in the world...yep, you guessed IT...proud Agnostic here, alright)

>I just threatened on another thread (as if anyone would care!) to leave the board if all anybody was going to write about were the same things you're mentioning.
Aah...you mean "The Perennials"???

LOL
Eeh, don't let 'em getcha down here, kid! That sorta stuff always happens at EVERY website's forums, ya know. Yep, eventually you just start kinda smilin' to yourself whenever ya find the same folks bringin' up their little pet peeves and fears!
(...oh, and thanks for your take on The Graduate, 'cause as you saw, I'm now startin' to come around to your way of thinkin' about this film...and yeah, like I also said down there, especially about Nichols' direction)
-
Which was another bone-of-contention over in that IMDb discussion I mentioned reading below.
Yep, another point that a few of those who took exception to this film made was that it's very unclear if the story took place in either the Antebellum or Postbellum eras.
-
Wait a minute here, willbe! I thought the original post here was about a film starring "your future husband" in the afterlife, Mr. Warren (aka "Snidely Whiplash") William?
And so I must ask here: Why are you defending Scottman's apparent contention that watching Mr. William slap around Joan B. in this movie isn't acceptable???
(...wait!...could it be that YOU are actually lookin' FORWARD to havin' Snidely, err I mean Warren slap YOU around in that afterlife TOO???!!!)
LOL

-
Aaah...so THAT 'splains it, eh?! Thanks, Kyle.
And so, sorry sewhite. Didn't mean to accuse ya of anything here, but was just wonderin' how the heck this thread had been revived after 10 years, that's all.
(...and thanks again for the other note here, Kyle...so it seems I'm NOT the only one..ahem.."late to The Graduate ceremonies" here, huh?!)

-
All is revealed here, MissW...
(...oh, and you're assumption is correct about its quality...I also tried watchin' a bit of it, the "David" story in fact, and discovered within a short time that the level of production was C-grade at best...and WHICH I soon discovered afterward that its producer is the very SAME guy who brings us many of those lame "Reality Shows", and thus immediately after discovering THAT, said to myself, "Aah! THAT explains IT!")
LOL

At the risk of further threatening the longevity of this thread, Mr. Froy, let us just say that you are DEFINITELY "preaching to the choir" here, my friend!
'Cause, I'VE been sayin' EXACTLY what YOU just said for YEARS now, though try as I might and as often as I "preach" this, there are STILL so many people in this country who actually believe the fallacy that I've just pretty much given up tryin' to make 'em "see the light", and thus NOW just enjoy makin' fun of 'em and their notion that their little arsenal is "the only thing keepin' 'em free in America"! Yep, I laugh my **** off at ALL of 'em now, which I suppose ALSO helps keep my sanity!!!
(...though NOW I think we better CHANGE the subject here, 'cause as I'm SURE you know, the longer THIS kinda talk goes on, poor ol' Rossellini's chances of bein' further discussed go DOWN with each and every mention of this current sidetracking)

-
Wouldn't be a very young Robert Young there, would it Dothery?
-
Well, I gotta say in the TEN years since this thread was started AND since anybody has posted anything in it(which I suppose begs the question: HOW the heck did you FIND this baby after all this time, sewhite2000???...though maybe I digress here, eh?!
), it seems I've found more of an appreciation for The Graduate than I ever have had in the past.I always found that movie just "okay", but during my viewing it the other night on TCM for maybe the 4th time ever, I seemed to really get into it, and maybe most notably began to appreciate Mike Nichols' direction of it.
-
Yeah, yeah...but did you folks happen to notice that in some kinda effort to show a measure of "bipartisanship", who they have playin' the "VICE-Devil" in this thing???
Nope, it wasn't some guy who looks like Joe. It was some guy who looks like Dick.....Chaney!!!
(...NOW talk about your "eerie coincidence", HUH?!)
LOL

By Jove! I do believe we have one Basil Radford there, my good lady!
-
>Very true. It would take millions of people of outstanding courage acting together to stand up to a dictatorship, and even then it might not change things, as they would be outgunned.
Well then...I suppose there goes THAT 2nd Amendment argument right out the ol' window, EH Mr.Froy?!!!!

ROFL
(...sorry Mr. Michael our local Admin around here...I JUST couldn't resist this one, THAT'S all, 'cause Mr.Froy just set me up too perfectly, ya see...PLEASE forgive me...as I continue to Roll On the Floor Laughing here!!!!!!!)

>How about a rib joint called The Sides of March?
Hmmm...yeah. That sounds good for lunch, I suppose. Do ya need a ride there?
(...'cause..ahem.."I'm your Vehicle, babe"...yep, "I'll take ya anywhere ya wanna go!")

Sepia, regarding the whole controversy about this film...
After reading the input in this thread so far, and figuring there might be some further discussion about this issue to be had elsewhere, I decided to so over to IMDb and read the thoughts of some others about why this film has now become so controversial. The people over there had some rather interesting and divergent thoughts which I thought were mostly presented in an intelligent and respectful manner. And so, here's what seems to be the crux of the argument here:
One side felt it wrong to present to children(especially) the character of Uncle Remus, who though otherwise depicted as "wise" is also depicted as "subservient" to his white adult peers.
The other side felt that this whole issue of Uncle Remus' subservience is overblown, and that the Aesopian lessons with the Old South flavor he departs to the children should override this concern.
I don't know. I suppose I can see both sides to this argument having some validity, but do tend to side with the latter opinion.
(...though then again, maybe THAT'S 'cause I've never felt much societal pressure to be "subservient" to anyone...'cept maybe to my wife occasionally!)

-
Well, I noticed they made a point of flyin' over the famed Hollywood and Vine intersection, but I sure wish they wouldn't flown over MY favorite old L.A. intersection!
And what intersection would THAT be, you ask?!
Why, THIS one...
...Pico and Sepulveda, of course!

(...if any of you out there don't "get this", then you also probably have never heard of "Dr.Demento", a Sunday night mainstray of L.A. Alternative Rock radio station KMET back in the '70s, and who played a lot of really rare and funny old novelty songs on his program...though I DO believe the "Doctor" was syndicated nationwide)

Thanks for the heads-up here, Andy! I'll be sure to seek that film out over there on FMC, as it does sound very entertaining.
