And btw...while I may have just kidded Eddie here, once again I think it's GREAT that he's going to be a permanent fixture at TCM now. Because, and as I hope you folks have figured out, AT LEAST Eddie has a PERSONALITY! (...and didn't during his initial time as host for that Noir series he did sound while presenting his opening and closing thoughts like he'd rather be anyplace ELSE than in front of that TCM set camera...a la cute little Matthew B. and a whole bunch of other "stars" seemingly out of their element as a presenter)

>Does his "vast" knowledge of films extend to comedies, musicals, soaps, Westerns, and historical dramas? Word is Eddie has MORE than a passing interest AND knowledge of ALL those genres, finance! (...though it IS rather telling that his favorite comedy is the gangster-themed "Some Like It Hot", his favorite musical is "Guys and Dolls", AND his favorite Western is "Station West", with "Johnny Guitar" running a very close second!)

Just to backtrack a little here... >I know Agnes Moorehead was Endora. EM's mother was an actress named Elizabeth Allen and since this one looks like her, I wondered if it was her. So I looked her up and she would have been far too young to be EM's mom. I believe I know where this "confusion" came from here, tracey. If that picture of birthday gal of a few days ago, Elizabeth Allen, doesn't look almost exactly like Elizabeth Montgomery when we played her "evil twin" Serena in "Bewitched", than I don't know what does.

>Does the film draw attention to its budget, and if so, does it aid in the telling of the story? Oh, you mean kind of like how it seems more than a few of Coppola's films, post-"The Godfather", seem to be "over-produced" and containing production values not commensurate with the small little human interest stories he's attempting to tell? (...I mean, c'mon now Francis...building an entire recreated set of Las Vegas inside your Zoetrope studios JUST to film "One From The Heart", the intimate story of two lost souls in Sin City and when filming on location there would have probably not ONLY given your piece the "edge" it needed, but might NOT have placed your behind in the bankruptcy courts, TOO?...REALLY?!...thought it was a good idea, did YA?!)

>The new movie playing in theatres, "Wolf of Wall Street" the f-word is uttered 506 times, breaking all records. >I'd just like to know who goes around counting such things. Is this something a future Jeopardy contestant might be well off knowing? Yep, maybe Andy. (...and probably after Alex hands over hosting duties to Haley Joel Osment)

Well Ham, I guess there COULD be some comfort in knowing that the odds of a peaceful world are better than...MY FREAKIN' CHANCES OF WINNIN' THE FREAKIN' POWERBALL JACKPOT!!!! (...though somehow I don't feel any better after considering that) LOL -
Young Mr. Lincoln (1939) tonight!!!!!!!!!!
Dargo2 replied to roverrocks's topic in Films and Filmmakers
Sorry to say here RR, but after your rather insightful reply to my thoughts regarding "Young Mr. Lincoln", and presented without any hyperbole at all, you seem to have "reverted to form" AGAIN after I asked you about some possible remake of that Archie Mayo-directed(and somewhat stage-bound) production of "The Petrified Forest". I mean, "a crime against humanity"?...REALLY???!!! (...and so, DID you read my reasons for this "wish" of mine a few weeks back or NOT?) -
Young Mr. Lincoln (1939) tonight!!!!!!!!!!

A reasonable enough point to be considered I'd say, RR. Thanks for your reply. Btw, I don't think you ever replied to my reply to you of a few weeks ago about the thought I expressed about a possible remake of playwright Sherwood's "The Petrified Forest" and after you also expressed differing views from mine in that one. (...I was hoping you would have replied in that one, also) -

Aaah, "The war to end all wars". (...whatever became of that quaint little notion anyway?) -
Yep, I TOO say the we should return to those late and lamented bygone days of yore...when nobody in real life would swear and life in general was idyllic! LOL (...THOUGH, "506 times" DOES seem to be "a little" overkill here, doesn't it)

Young Mr. Lincoln (1939) tonight!!!!!!!!!!
Dargo2 replied to roverrocks's topic in Films and Filmmakers
Do I hail from a "southern state" you ask, RR? Well, ONLY if you'd count "southern" California as one of 'em......duuuuuude! Nope RR, I believe you might have misread the intent of my post below there, though I'm glad you at least appear to have caught the major point I was attempting to make...the one about Hollywood's tendencies to "go lightly" upon a biopic's subject, and especially if the subject is one considered "a great person in history", such as in this case, ol' Honest Abe. And now regarding Abe's "flaws", I think Sam Waterston did a fairly good job of covering this line of thought in the 1988 TV movie "Lincoln" in which he portrayed the title character. As just one example, In this portrayal of the great American president, Waterston presented Lincoln's occasional exasperation with his role in history, occasionally by losing his temper. And yet in "Young Mr. Lincoln", Fonda's Lincoln seems to always be "one cool character", and MAYBE just a little "too cool" for me to believe Lincoln actually was. This above is pretty much all I meant earlier, and was primarily spurred to write because of FredCDobbs seemingly equating Lincoln with Jesus Christ. And no, I'm not some "Holy Roller" here who might have taken offense at somebody comparing Jesus to ANY human living or dead, either. Once again I was just expressing the point that as much as I TOO have always liked watching "Young Mr. Lincoln" and Henry Fonda's portrayal of the man in it, one should probably best consider it "a drama loosely based in history and historic fact, and very entertainingly done"...and as most if not all biopics that Hollywood has ever produced...especially during the studio era. -
>There's infection among TCM guest presenters? I hope for Eddie's sake that he stays away until it's all cleared up! (face-palm) LOL Looks as if I must've somehow subconsciously thought that "L" in the word "inflection" was one of those "superfluous letters" like that "U" you guys up there use a whole lot, EH Tom?! LOL (...thanks, I'll go change that right now)
-
(...I think i'm just gonna copy and paste my response I've just posted in SueSueApplegate's thread over in the "Hot Topics" forum which is about this same subject...) EXCELLENT!!! He's not only very knowledgeable about the subject, but I also found him to be a very good presenter of the information he imparts. (...saaaaay...maybe HE could teach some of the OTHER TCM guest presenters on the finer points of the job, EH?!...it's called "INFLECTION", PEOPLE!!!) LOL Edited by: Dargo2 on Jan 27, 2014 11:46 AM

Yeah, and when it didn't catch on, word is William Castle shed a tear in honor of its passing. Btw, I saw "Earthquake" at Grauman's Chinese upon its release(some might say "escape") and it was set up with the whole "Sensuround" thing. And no, I don't recall it supplying all THAT much of a "shaking" sensation at all, and which leads me to believe that we might consign THIS idea to that other "Hollywood Urban Legend" thread goin' on around here also right now. -
Gotta say Joe, every time I see that picture of the lovely Dolores Moran down there, I think of the later era actress, the lovely Morgan Fairchild. (...quite the resemblance, wouldn't ya say?!)
-
Not so sure your first point would've come to pass, Arturo. I think WWII was just a short postponing of the inevitable confrontation between the West and the Soviet Union. Remember, there were a whole lot of these kinda guys here walkin' the streets of American cities in the 1940s too... (...RATS...I can't get this picture of actor Ray Teal as Mr. Mollett in "The Best Years of Our Lives" and in that drug store scene to post here!!!) Edited by: Dargo2 on Jan 27, 2014 10:01 AM

Young Mr. Lincoln (1939) tonight!!!!!!!!!!
Dargo2 replied to roverrocks's topic in Films and Filmmakers
>This is indeed a fine film. Agreed. I've always enjoyed this film, myself. >The more I've watched it over the years, the more it makes me think that Abraham Lincoln, as presented in old Hollywood movies like this, is usually presented very much like the way Jesus is presented in old Hollywood movies. Agreed again, however, this might be exactly the "problem" with studio era biopics, as they tended to make the subject of the piece a little too reverential in tone by the whitewashing away of some of their more unattractive personality traits. (...and thus why the phrase: "Don't get your History from the Movies" makes such a valid point) -
>What kind of film would Jennifer Jones & Gary Cooper have made? A melodrama, a western? Something, anything. I think their personalities would have matched beautifully on screen. Hmmm...perhaps sometime like: "Duel...at High Noon"??? Actually TB, yes, it would'be been a Western, and in fact AND come to think of it, I think Jennifer probably would've been better cast than Grace as Marshall Will Kane's bride. Maybe Jennifer and Coop might have been able to project a little more "chemistry" together than the little I think Coop and Kelly were able to muster in that film. (...well, at least I've always thought Kelly a little miscast in that role anyway, and I don't think I'm the only one who's ever expressed this sentiment)

>...so there's be all these men who are now 50-60 whose parents named them "Adlai". LOL Well, JUST for your information, finance, this "Dwight" HERE wasn't named after Ike. Thaaaat's right, I was a "Junior". My father's name was also "Dwight", and though he served under his command in WWII, he wasn't named after Ike, either. And, I doubt most of the few other Dwights you've ever met were named after Ike. (...still a funny line up there, though!)
-
Funny thoughts from you too here Sepia, but REALLY? Ya don't see any resemblance at all between Joseph and Dave??? (...gotta admit though, Campbell Scott does look a lot like Dave too...but he's not old enough to be Dave's dad, remember)
-
LOL Yeah Tom, but do you know how to get to Wolf's Twitter account?!!! (...funny stuff there, ol' buddy!)

Well Bev, if there IS, I gotta feelin' these's probably more than a few folks around here who'd like to see that "tutorial" sent MY way! (...and finance's way...and let's see, who else here.....) Though I really haven't seen any of the nominated movies this year, somethin's tellin' me that Sandra won't win again. Just a gut feeling, ya understand. And so, and now that it's been definitely decided that, no, in fact no one CAN hear you scream while in space, has there been any consensus as of yet if another can hear your stomach make those little gurgling sounds it makes about 15 minutes after you've "dined" at Taco Bell in that same sort of environment? (...and speaking of "gut feelings") -
Who are your biggest vintage crushes?
Dargo2 replied to WinslowLeach74's topic in General Discussions
Well, for shame. What with all these long long lists here, I certainly hope you people realize how truly fickle we all are...well, with the exception of dear sweet selimsa down there and her sole listing of her "one true crush" Ty. (...Yep, it seems being "loyal and true-blue" is a thing of the past, alright!) -
