  1. Yep! The sultry brunette actress played the organ at all Gilmore Field home games...well, that IS until that one fateful day in '39 when she tried to catch a line drive foul tip off the bat of Frenchy Uhalt while playing "Dah dah dah DAH dah DAH, CHARGE" and broke three fingers on her left hand, and thus spelling the end of her little remembered musical moonlighting in Tinseltown.

It was all just front office work from then on out, though word was she WAS very instrumental in that famous Lefty Wilkie/Jake Thies trade.

    (...sorry...couldn't resist) ;)

  2. >So that is the kind of cost benefit analysis going on. My point is, it is not helpful to jump to the conclusion that someone selling national secrets is just as bad as someone beating up on someone.

Not quite an accurate conclusion there, my friend...and I'll tell ya why.

While "strategically" speaking, the idea of a traitor giving state secrets to an enemy IS detrimental to our country's short term agendas, in the "LONG-term" whenever ANYONE in the name of our great country creates the public perception either within our country OR to the REST of the world that our "American Ideals" are nothing BUT "nice little words on documents" which don't really have to be adhered to when the "going gets rough", then THAT sort of thing ALWAYS does irreparable damage to our IMAGE, and makes America look like nothin' but a bunch of hypocrites, and in essence "traitors" to those very ideals.

(...and in today's world ESPECIALLY where as they say, "You have to win the hearts and minds of the non-committed out there in order to win the war", this is even MORE important than ever!)

  3. hpyglf, let's get at least ONE thing correct here, okay?!

While there most likely WERE some extreme Left-Wingers who MIGHT have been rightly considered "traitors" to America's cause during this time in our history by passing along state secrets to Moscow(a la the Rosenbergs) or maybe by some other underhanded measures along the way, what SOME of the extreme Right-Winger Anti-Communist ideologues in our country at this same time were doing was ALSO as "ANTI-American" as ANYTHING that their counterparts on The Left were doing!

(...and thus why today THIS Centrist HERE can NOT abide Extremists on EITHER freakin' side of the political spectrum!!!)

  4. Now, if THIS scene from Roger Corman's The Wild Angels doesn't best encapulate the feelings of watching a "guilty pleasure" movie, then I don't know what does!

'Cause not only is Peter Fonda's acting atrocious in it, but his words now seem so dated and laughable that ya just GOTTA "love" this one and almost ALL those old biker exploitation flicks made back in that era.

(...though I suppose it helps if you've also always been into motorcycles like I have)

  5. >You are probably correct. JFK did get the ball rolling with the assasinations of Diem and his brother. After that, the US was really stuck in it. I spent three years and I can say I never understood what the point was. We needed Frank Capra to make a film to explain it.

    No need here, hpyglf.

I think director George Englund already did a pretty good job of THAT with his 1963 production of The Ugly American, and which I always thought did an excellent job of foretelling what 1960's American foreign policy would get us involved in.

(..btw...another pretty good film regarding this issue might be Joseph Mankiewicz's 1958 production of The Quiet American)

  6. >Coincidental that both George Clinton and Hilary Clinton are mentioned on the same thread. No relation, and Hilary Clinton never told anyone to get the funk out of my face.

Hmmmm...well finance, then I suppose you must've missed watching any of those recent Congressional hearings where I thought Hilary did just THAT!!!

    LOL

  7. Great find of the pic here, heuriger! And yep, that's Mr. Newton and his business partner, alright. However, that's NOT a book about Fig Newtons. Nope, that's the balance sheets for their chain of THESE fast food outlets....

(...and hence my earlier play off of Joe's "Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips" line, of course) ;)

  8. So, ya wanna know about Napoleon, do ya hp?!

Well, as far as I could ever tell, the ONLY problem THAT guy ever had was that he was around just about a century and half too early hear a warning made by ANOTHER great army commander about the inherent limits of strategic powers a "Military-Industrial Complex" can and often does ultimately come to face!

Yep, in other words, the dude got too big for his britches by over-estimating what his firepower could accomplish.

    (...sound familiar???) ;)

    LOL

  9. Well hp, while you have just shown an excellent knowledge of war history and of the various battles contained within, I believe you made a great leap in trying to equate these historical facts with the off-handed, well-known and often used little joke that's done at the expense of the French military, and one which is probably primarily told in the English-speaking world.

But yes, of course every country's military history contains tales of mis-planned and poorly executed ventures.

(...and if your point here was something along the lines of: "If ya can't laugh at yourself, then ya have no right to laugh at anybody else", then yeah I agree with ya here, and why I personally am usually the first to laugh at our own American foibles)

  10. Btw, has anyone else here noticed that after "frankadelic" the OP posted his, for want of a better word, "accusatory" first and ONLY post here, and after I immediately asked him to clarify the intent of his thread, that he's never returned to this website to answer any of follow-up postings by others in his thread?!

I'll just never understand why some folks do this! What?! Is it JUST to get somethin' off their chest or somethin'?

What the heck ever happened to the concept of waiting for considered replies to one's statements and opinions, HUH?! Are we NOW in such a state in this country AND the world that we wish not to hear anything BUT the sounds of our own voices and our own opinions???

  11. Well hp ol' boy, IF ya wanna get real EXACT here, I suppose you MIGHT wanna consider replacing the "Obama playin' basketball while Rome..err..I mean Benghazi burns" metaphor with MAYBE somethin' about the Secretary of State at the time bein' too busy lookin' for new pantsuits in order to make sure all of our consulates were prepared for the worst, EH?! 'Cause dude, THAT was HER responsibility, RIGHT?! WITH, of course "an assist" by the House and Senate subcommittees responsible for such diplomatic oversights also, CORRECT?!

(...gotta say though dude, with your bringing up of THIS issue AND the whole thing about HUAC in that OTHER thread, you really ARE into the "political aspects" of things, AREN'T ya?!) ;)
