  1. Just saw the following that Addison wrote a few weeks ago in this thread...

    >I dunno. I'm torn. I didn't see it, it doesn't sound that bad to me, but then again, I still remember the afternoon showing of Paths of Glory where BM suggested to the viewers at the end of the film that they "insert their own French military joke here."

And so Addison ol' boy, while yes maybe Ben's comment there was, let us say, "less than diplomatic", I have to admit that when I heard Ben say that after that showing of Paths of Glory you mentioned, which was right after he ALSO mentioned that the French government for years had banned the showing of that film on French television because they had felt it "denigrated the French military" ..well, after years of feeling ONLY so-so about him, THAT'S the moment I had one big ol' belly laugh AND became a REAL Ben Mankiewicz FAN!!!

(...'cause Lord knows Bob Osborne NEVER would have had the "balls" to say somethin' like THAT...though of course, I'm sure SOME folks would probably prefer to think of that more as "crassness" than "balls", but HEY, to each their own, EH?!)

    LOL

  2. Just watching it here now in AZ, and here's your answer, sfpcc1.

    The movie was...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rules_of_the_Game

Btw, funny spoof segment about British films there.

(...and am I wrong here, or was the whole "Mary Spruckler finding her musical stride after breaking up with Bart" thing supposed to be a subtle spoof of Taylor Swift's musical muse?)

  3. Yeah, that's true alright. Groucho sure could be rather "sharp" with the his sidekick occasionally on that old show, huh. But then again, George always kelt "smillin' through", didn't he.

(...though yeah, I DO recall those smiles would occasionally seem somewhat "forced" when Groucho would REALLY get on his case)

  4. >I'm not sure what you mean by "blank stare-ness." She is attracted to character in a face rather than the usual pretty boy features. Sean Connery and Steve McQueen top her list.

In my "blank stare-ness" comment was in reference to some possible thought that Whitman's face seemed to express, as I believe you and Sans made of note of, some sort of "non-knowing-ness" and "little knowledge of the world" persona, and the opposite of which evidently Sans seemed to suggest that James Fox did possess. Though, maybe I'm off the mark on this point.

And, between Whitman and Fox, my opinion would be that Fox projects much more of a "pretty boy" image than does the more rugged looking Whitman....but of course, this would be more a subjective thought than objective.

    > I didn't address the question because I have no opinion. He's a good actor, but a lot of good actors never made it big. Maybe he just had a lousy agent.

Very true, it could indeed have been a lousy agent causing his star not to rise. OR, as I mentioned earlier, some other issues involved, such as alcohol abuse, OR that he didn't like acting or was just lazy which could have also caused this. And thus the reason for my initial inquiry in this tread.

    >Not yet. On the advice of our lawyer, we're waiting until she becomes a citizen. Her 5 years of residency is up soon; then she can begin the usual process which takes another 1 1/2 years. There are faster ways, but like everything in our relationship, there are things which might complicate matters. Going through the long haul, dotting all the t's and crossing our i's, is safe and sure.

Well, you be SURE to dot all those I's AND cross all those t's, 'cause from the very beginning when SansFin first came on the scene around here, I KNEW she was a "Keeper", as she's ALWAYS impressed me with her intellect and gracious manners, and that somebody would be a VERY lucky guy that would have the good fortune of being in her life.

  5. Actually MissW, before forgetting to return to this thread yesterday, I was about to mention how much I found your posting of Hirsch's words were so perfectly timed and coincidentally garmane to not only the talk of Ms. Lake, but also weirdly so to the mild sidetracking of it with the whole ventiloquist thing.

    (...good find!)

  6. LOL

Ya know dp, I was thinkin' the very same thing here myself!

Yep, maybe before they go about their business, they gotta shut this puppy down for a minute or so before carrying out their work.

'Cept I WAS always under the impression that it was NOT a "Whip" that Admin of websites wield, but was instead more like a "Hammer....of SMITING"!

(...yep, kinda more like Thor, and a little less like Lash LaRue!)

  7. So, in essence you're sayin' this has less to do with any, say, "Stiff upper lip-ness" than it does with some, say, "blank stare-ness" aspect to the faces in question here.

And so then I suppose your answer to my question as to why Whitman never became a bigger star might be that while I suggested he had "a face the camera likes", YOU and the Mrs(I believe Sans IS your Mrs. as I recall, right Cap?!) are NOT "cameras", and thus don't especially care for his face.

(...and if that's about it, then as they say, "to each his own" I suppose, eh Cap ol' buddy?!) ;)

  8. >By the way, Dargo, I was worried that your use of the word "tookis" might get this thread shut down! If the Moderator really wants to "crack" down, that is.

    LOL

Yeah, and if the Admin ESPECIALLY has a thing against the use of Yiddish around here TOO, huh! ;)

(...btw, I believe "tookus" is spelled with a "u" and not an "i"...though then again, this goyim here COULD be wrong, ya know!)

  9. >Is that what you think happened in the 'Wilson' thread - that several people went "so far over the line"?

Well dark, if ask ME, I don't think so.

BUT, five'll getcha ten THIS was what the Admin was thinkin' here...

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRHq3YYxPtDdNWMZmwf6Qm

    LOL

(...and yes, as Kyle mentioned earlier here, there WAS some talk about "who was the dumbest President" goin' on in that thread, and which I tried to downplay because, ONCE AGAIN I KNEW where THAT kinda talk would be headed...THOUGH on the other hand surprisingly AND thankfully somehow I felt THAT sort of sidetrcking didn't get out of hand...though of course THAT might have been ONLY because some of the people around here who might have disagreed with the name offered up as "the dumbest POTUS ever" hadn't read the thread yet, and thus hadn't put THEIR two-cents in about that idea yet...yep, ya THINK?!)

  10. Just finished watching the film out here in the west, and as it had been many years since my last viewing of this film which I also remembered as being "fun" and well-made overall, that is still my opinion of it.

And now Sans, re your statement here...

    >It is sad to say that I find no chemistry between Stuart Whitman and Sarah Miles and I believe she should have let James Fox carry her off as he is far more handsome and sophisticated.

I suppose I have to agree with you here about the lack of chemistry between Whitman and Miles(though I have the feeling you're probably more into the more "genteel and refined" and achetype British gentlemanly sort, as compared to the "brash" American type, and thus possibly why you think James Fox "more handsome" than Whitman), I've always wondered why Whitman's star never seemed to rise to the level of what I always thought it should have.

And though no one will or should ever place his acting ability in the same level as Olivier of course ;) , I've always thought him reasonable able and beliveable in the roles in which he's appeared...AND with this thought in mind without my ever watching him in his Best Actor Oscar nominated performance in 1961's The Mark, which must have somewhat proved the guy COULD act.

And so, with one of those faces "that the camera likes"(at least I've always thought so anyway), I've always wondered who's toes he might have stepped on while in The Biz in order to short circuit his career? OR, an alcohol or drug problem, maybe?

(...'cause like I've said here, I thought the guy should have been much more successful than he was)

  11. >Hey, what world would you rather live in, 1984, or a random episode of Twilight Zone ? But if it's T.Z., you don't get to pick which one.

(...and in my very best teeth-clinching Rod Serling impression...)

"Submitted for your approval: One rather insightful observation offered to up by a lady presently freezing her tookus off in a land known as 'The Great White North'."

(...in other words MissW, I agree with ya...I ALSO think the courteous thing for the Admin to do would be to maybe express their thoughts as to why they have felt the need to take some action somewhere along the line, and so maybe at least some folks around here won't end up feelin' like "Winston Smith" whenever these sorta things happen around here) ;)

  12. Well dark, all I can say here is that I've never gone cryin' to the Admins about ANY thread. Nope, never.

And, while I ALSO know what you're sayin' here about the kind of "warnings" which "some" people will occasionally insert into potentially "heated" threads(and of which I NEVER did in the "Wilson" thread), I have to say once again, that while I view almost EVERY frequent contributor to this website as a "cut above the Hoi polloi" in their abilities to communicate their thoughts in a civil manner on these potentially "hot button issues", and of which I believe the "Wilson" thread was a prime example of such excellent behavior...none the less, I suppose it STILL all comes down to what the Admin will ultimately believe violates "The Rules" around here, doesn't it.

Yep, my opinion is that while the "That was Quick!" thread began to venture into too many opinions expressed about the Politicos of recent times, the "Wilson" thread had stayed on course and for the most part didn't venture into "Soap Box" territory. And thus, I think it's a shame that the Admin has evidently decided to delete that thread too.

(...but once again, it's THEIR call and we are but guests "in their home")

    Edited by: Dargo2 on Feb 10, 2013 2:12 PM

  13. MY guess, finance?!

Well, seeing as how the "THAT was QUICK!" thread had "jumped the shark" into the waters of "Godwin's Law", while deleting that one, the Powers-That-Be around here decided that the "Wilson" thread had maybe ventured into similar waters, and that IT also might lead to too much of a political discussion...and thus it was ALSO "sunk".

(...and no, I have NO idea why I decided to answer your question in this "nautical theme" here!!!) ;)

  14. Yeah finance?! Well like I said down below there in my little rant about him bein' a "freakin' loser" and throwin' his career away because of his drug abuse issues, and like I ALSO said down there about his ruining his KIDS lives because of it TOO, I'm afraid I can't say I hold the same emotions you seem to have for the guy.

(...nope, sorry...I don't feel ONE BIT sorry for him!)

  15. Yep, slayton my friend. I know for sure that that Stephen Stills song was in Forrest Gump anyway, and I actually thought of that one first. However, as you notice here, ITS lyrics...

    Paranoia strikes deep

Into your life it will creep

It starts when you're always afraid

You step out of line, the man come and take you away

...didn't include Simon's "in the heartland" part.

(...and so, I just thought my "contribution" to this thread was just a little more, let us say, "apropos" here, THAT'S all !) ;)

    ROFL

  16. (...well, if we're now allowed to post statements in the thread made by radio personalities who were never in any movies, then how about some song lyrics written by a guy who WAS at least in a FEW anyway...)

Paranoia strikes deep in the heartland

But I think it's all overdone

    Exaggerating this and exaggerating that

    They don't have no fun

I don't believe what I read in the papers

They're just out to capture my dime

    I ain't worrying

    And I ain't scurrying

    I'm having a good time

    -Paul Simon

    "Have a Good Time"

    LOL

  17. >I'd say that that shot of Ryan O'Neal also makes him look like Tom Berringer.

Here ya go, VX. Just for you...

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSbcUxSteLOczrYIjwYmSG

And yeah, I think you're on to somethin' here.

(...though then again, maybe ALL "puffy-lookin'" older white guys who maybe eat too many donuts look like this, EH?!)
