>Filmgoddess, I may disagree with you about a certain city in California, but I totally agree with your post here. Well said!
Yeah, well, exchange that "certain city in California" thing with the name of Tom Hanks, and I'm right there with ya on this, Swithin ol' buddy!!!

-
Now WAIT a minute, Sepia!!! Whaddaya MEAN this ain't no "country club", HUH?!
(...so does this mean I've been payin' the very same green fees as the non-member hoi polloi out there all this time???...WELL, Michael is CERTAINLY gonna hear about THIS from me!!!)
-
Nope finance. It's more that in the last few years I've finally learned how to more appreciate all the absurdities of life around us.
(...though I DO admit that the occasional two fingers of a nice Single Malt can heighten my appreciation of such...and so your "medication" supposition on my part MAY not be totally without some merit here, ol' buddy!)

-
Well, in that case, I suppose it...ahem.."willbe" just a matter of time before I find this out then, huh clore!

LOL
(...btw, and just for the record, willbe never really got on my nerves all that much, and in fact I would often look forward to reading her occasionally insightful though often much too "vehemently expressed" opinions around here)
-
>Oh hell, back in the day the FBI had a file on just about anybody who was anybody.
>Yes, much like Google and Facebook today.
LOL
Good one, Fred!
(...and so I guess this just goes to show ya that despite all this talk in some quarters that the government is taking over too much of our lives today, there seems to be at least SOME things that private enterprise has taken over from the governmment now days, huh?!)

-
Make that two, clore.
Yep, it..ahem..."willbe" QUITE some time before I could ever imagine Helen here being that sort around here!!!
(...sorry, couldn't resist)

LOL
-
Eeh! I wouldn't worry too much about all that, Helen.
Ya see, I was once at a garden party, and about half way through the festivities after I said somethin' that this one guy vehemently took exception to, it suddenly dawned on me...
You can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself.
(...okay, so that really didn't happen to ME, but I think you know what I mean here, right?!)

-
Yeah, I suppose that nomenclature might be a little more apropos there, Filmgoddess, BUT I have to know somethin' here...With your chosen site name of "Filmgoddess", I'm just dyin' to know who's "love/lust child" YOU might be?
In other words, what "film goddess" do YOU resemble, HUH?!
(...I mean, I've already told ya who's "love/lust child" I might be, so fess up here, lady...I'm tryin' to get some kind'a visual here, ya see!)
-
Good reply there, Swithin. That off-the-wall 1965 black comedy is also a great...for want of a better word..."treatise" on the...once again, for want of a better word..."feel" of L.A., alright!

-

OOH...OOH! I KNOW..I KNOW!!!
It's a very young Frank McHugh in DRAG!!!
Think I'm KIDDIN'??? Then just LOOK here...
(...told ya, didn't I?!!!)
LOL

Well, while you two freakin' "New Yawkers" are fighin' over that, excuse me here while I break into song about MY old hometown...a song that I think EVERYBODY would agree perfectly captures the spirit of that city...
(...oh, and if you're wonderin', this song WAS featured in the movie Naked Gun...and NOW without further adieu...)
Hate New York City
It's cold and it's damp
And all the people dressed like monkeys
Let's leave Chicago to the Eskimos
That town's a little bit too rugged
For you and me you bad girl
Rollin' down the Imperial Highway
With a big nasty redhead at my side
Santa Ana winds blowin' hot from the north
And we as born to ride
Roll down the window put down the top
Crank up the Beach Boys baby
Don't let the music stop
We're gonna ride it till we just can't ride it no more
From the South Bay to the Valley
From the West Side to the East Side
Everybody's very happy
'Cause the sun is shining all the time
Looks like another perfect day
I love L.A. (We love it)
I love L.A. (We love it)
Look at that mountain
Look at those trees
Look at that bum over there, man
He's down on his knees
Look at these women
There ain't nothin' like 'em nowhere
Century Boulevard (We love it)
Victory Boulevard (We love it)
Santa Monica Boulevard (We love it)
Sixth Street (We love it, we love it)
I love L.A.
I love L.A.
(We love it)

Btw, if having people occasionally walk up to you and saying they think you strongly resemble a certain actor is relevent to this thread, then I have to say there might be the faint possibilty that I am actually James Coburn's love child. And yeah, they say I even have his voice.
(...and btw, I said JAMES Coburn, NOT Charles Coburn, thank God!)
LOL
-
Sepia, re the actor who you think resembles McQueen...I believe you're talkin' about Brit actor Damian Lewis, who first made his mark in the television miniseries "Band Of Brothers", and most recently won this year's Emmy for his lead role on the cable series "Homeland".
And now regarding this whole "Love Child" thing...I've said it more than once around here that I've always firmly believed(okay, I have strong suspicion anyway
) that David Letterman is REALLY Joseph Cotten's love child! -
Oh and btw, while watching Forty Guns last night, I also was tryin' to figure out "the thing" with Barry Sullivan.
Yep, pretty one note, wasn't he?!
(...maybe it was that gaunt squinty-eyed, almost Lee Van Cleef thing he had goin' on, HUH?!)

-
So, you LIKE that type, do ya?!

(...well, I suppose according to SOME reports, Cochran DID go out "in style" anyway!)

-
LOL
(...I love it whenever you play dumb, Kid!)

-
Eugenia, I think your meant to say "Scott Brady", not "Ralph Meeker" there.
(...though trust me, over the years I TOO have often mistaken Scott Brady for Ralph Meeker...and I suppose you can throw Steve Cochran into this mix, and ya'd have a REAL trio of "hardass" types that I would occasionally mentally interchange!)

-
LOL
Good one, Ms.dpompper!
(...along with MM and Raquel Welch over the years, of course)

-
Yeah, Fred?! Well, I THINK we can understand that those people may never have watched "Treasure" and thus wouldn't know "Fred C. Dobbs" from(as Sheldon Leonard's Nick the bartender in another famous movie says...) "Adam's off ox"
, BUT like I'VE mentioned before around here, what the heck is the excuse when I tell 'em my first name is "Dwight" and spelled just like THIS GUY'S name was......and they haven't got a freakin' clue what I'm talkin' about!!!
(...now THAT is TRULY sad, wouldn't ya say?!)

-
Well dpommper, I'll give ya the "laconic"(for want of a better term) style he used in Bull Durham was true to his character, but sorry, this man's opinion here is that his voice and his whole usual demeanor in most of his films always gave me the impression that he MIGHT BE a "good average buddy" to hang with, but not someone who whenever he'd enter the room, all eyes would focus on him.
(...in other words, no "star power"...though as they say, "your mileage may vary", and evidently in YOUR case, it does from mine)

-
Well, gettin' back to whom I never found all that sexy...
Despite that famous leggy pin-up many of the WWII G.I.s supposedly found sexy(maybe exemplified best by actor Robert Strauss' character "Animal" in Stalag 17 ), Betty Grable never did a thing for me.
(...nope, but the OTHER famous WWII pin-up, Rita Hayworth sure did!!!)
-
OH! And btw, Tiki baby...
I have to admit I've always agreed with ya about Costner, anyway. How THAT guy ever became a star is STILL a mystery to me, lady!
(...can you say, "BOR-ing"???!!!)
(...OH, and one MORE aside here, Tiki...NOT that there isn't a time and place for De Niro and Pacino-esque scenery chewing occasionally...didn't want ya to get the mistaken impression I don't like those guys ya see, 'cause I do...occasionally!)
-
finance wrote: "So what is the secret of Hanks' success? His looks will certainly never make anyone forget Tyrone Power."
And then dpommper replied:"I've heard it said that he possesses that "everyman" quality reminiscent of Jimmy Stewart."
And now I'LL respond with....
Exactly Ms. dpommper. That's pretty much it. Nope, he's not the "Pretty Boy" type like Power. He's always been more the "likeable presence" on screen....well, I suppose other than in the TikiSoo household anyway. Though then again I'm wondering if the TikiSoo household might prefer the New York "ethnic" type, like say the De Niro or maybe the Pacino type? The type that often chew the scenery.
(..."Ya know wot I'm talkin' 'bout heah?!")

LOL

>How about, "New York's a Lonely Town, When You're the Only Surfer Boy Around"?
LOL
Yeah, I suppose that one would've worked too.
(...yep, there's nothin' like a little lead singer falsetto thing goin' in order to convey the ol' California beach sound, is there?!...of course then again, Frankie Valli didn't do so bad on the east coast by usin' that whole falsetto thing to his advantage, huh!)
