  1. Ham, I don't know if you've ever watched the very VERY weird 1996 David Cronenberg film Crash (not to be confused with the 2004 Oscar winning Paul Haggis film), but in this film in which Cronenberg attempts to explore some strange sub-subculture of people who "get off" on seeing and actually being in automobile crashes, there's this following screen in which a dramatized re-creation of Dean's fatal accident is shown, and which on the whole has the facts down pretty well....

  2. Of "movie cars", my favorites are the:

James Bond's 1964 Aston Martin DB5 in Goldfinger

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ-5H2jnpwrw-T4nLNXo88

Steve McQueen's 1968 Ford Mustang GT390 in Bullitt

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcROPsc7t0gO-2cuACGaub3

And, if we can include cars which were never in the movies but where owned by stars of the past, then my favorite in this regard would be the 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder, such as the one made famous(or maybe infamous) as James Dean's "death car".

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTqrIlHrmA_CEbJLC9gUNU

(...the latter of which I've loved the looks of for so long that about 5 years ago I purchased a replica version of this mid-engined Porsche race car...couldn't afford the present asking prices of between $1-3M for any of the remaining 45 of 95 ever made of the real ones, ya see!) ;)

  3. Okay FG, I suppose I can understand the whole dislike of Madonna and Keanu, or at least their apparent lack of range in their acting styles, but c'mon now, Tom Hanks?

Look, the guy CAN act and has a pretty good range...though I'm sure you'll also disagree with me on this.

And so, because you apparently aren't big on Hanks(no pun intended ;) ), then I'm going to have to assume because he was the lead in one of the best docudramas in recent years, namely Apollo 13, a film which even though we all knew how the story ended in a triumph of American problem-solving at its best, it still had many of us on the edge of our seats, AND because Hanks also starred and I thought was excellent in one of the best films ever made about the AIDS epidemic, Philadelphia, another film spotlighting a certain time in our history...well, because he was in both of these films, I suppose you would think both of these films should be precluded from induction onto this list too, right?!

(...or it is STILL mainly that both of these films where made years after Louis B. Mayer was dead and buried along with the studio system???) :smirk:

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nope finance, I don't believe so.

(...nope, in fact to their credit, I don't believe TCM ever even jumped on the ol' "Abe Vigoda is dead" bandwagon when THAT became all the rage a while back!) ;)

    LOL

  5. finance wrote: "OK.......Is that detailed enough for you?......... Powell's character was so impartial that I almost fell asleep listening to him. I'm not too big on chain-smoking doctors, either."

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nope, sorry finance ol' buddy, that was not NEARLY detailed enough to suffice. Nope, sorry, not nearly enough.

And so, getting beyond this whole anti-smoking thing you have and which you've stated in a number of threads over time around here, (and NOT to mention that in WWII, our armed forces were issued cigarettes in their rations, and thus almost EVERYBODY smoked back then..yep, and probably including the doctors in our armed forces too) IF Powell "put you to sleep" because, as evidently you agreed with me, his character was supposed to be the older and wiser "observer" onboard that U.S. Navy vessel and was primarily there to be the guy Mister Roberts went to for solace and occasional advice, and thus wasn't supposed to be any sort of "plot motivator" in this story, then tell me(yep, even in your usually inimitable "Man-Of-Few-Words" fashion ;) ) WHICH actor you might have thought would have fit the bill better than Powell in this role and WHY you think they might have been better, IF you would???

(...btw ol' buddy, I hope you realize that the reason I'm pursuing this point is that I respect your opinion around here...well, USUALLY anyway!) ;)

  6. Wow finance. What exactly gives you cause to believe William Powell "stunk" in Mister Roberts ?

You see, I've always thought the story is pretty much told from the perpective of his older and wiser character "Doc", who is supposed to be somewhat of an "impartial observer" to all the proceedings onboard that ship.

And so with this in mind, I always thought Powell's performance was just about spot on.

(...and while I realize you usually prefer to post in short one or two sentences around here, PLEASE take the time to post a more detailed than normal response for that opinion of yours here ) ;)

    LOL

Well Sans my ol' friend, I suppose I can see how someone who grew up in the repressive and depressive conditions of the Soviet culture, (which you so ably describe in your very next response to Bildwasser) could somehow develop this mild sense of paranoic tendencies enough to not only come to believe in some "surreal" imaginings that there would EVER be an instances where the American culture would devolve into a Soviet form, but in contrast would ALSO come to believe that ANY of MY statements in this thread(especially my contention that shooting guns is NOT a REAL sport) would be in any manner "surreal", EITHER!

(...nope, ya see dear lady, ALL of my very astute observations and thoughts in this thread, while perhaps occasionally bordering on the hyperbole for comic effect, were NEVER "surreal"!!!)

    LOL

  8. Oh and btw...In the last few days I've made four, count 'em FOUR comments were I've stated that shooting guns is NOT a "REAL sport" like tennis, basketball and every other REAL sport where one exerts their cardiovascular system, and which will help keep you from bein' a now typical overweight and out of shape American. And YET, no one...NOPE not a livin' soul here has challenged me on that...INCLUDING our resident lady originally from the Ukraine who stated she "gained self-confidence by shooting guns" in her youth.

And SO, because as they say, "Silence gives consent", I GUESS I'm just going to have to assume that EVERYBODY agrees with me on that, HUH!!!

    Well, it's ABOUT TIME!!!

    LOL

(...and so NOW, get out there and EXERCISE, PEOPLE!!!...I'm TIRED of lookin' at all your OVERLY LARGE American GUTS and BUTTS out there!!!!)

  9. Eeh! Now ham my friend, DON'T give up ALL hope for our future here, dude!

Ya see, just about the time I too think all the freakin' kids in this country are pretty much like the ones in your picture there, I'll happen to catch one of the "Teen Tournaments" on "Jeopardy", and after watching THOSE well behaved, well spoken and studious kids, it somehow renews my faith in America's future.

(...though admitted it DOES seem the idea of a kid now days being "well behaved, well spoken and studious" is akin to being even MORE "uncool" among his peers than it was when you and I were that age, doesn't it!) ;)

  10. And here's to you and yours having a very happy Holiday and a peaceful and prosperous new year right back, calvin. I too have enjoyed this exchange of thoughts here.

    Cheers!

(...oh, and btw calvin, while you will now being doing that whole movie thing, I'LL be hittin' the ol' tennis courts shortly and indulging in a REAL sport where one raises their cardiovascular metabolism in efforts to keep my trim 60y/o 6'2" 190lb body in shape...and UNLIKE those fake "sports" where all ya do is point a gun and pull the trigger while riding around on a quad and lookin' for deer to shoot...or say at the target range where cardiovasular EXERCISE is at a minimum ALSO!!!...yeah, sorry, I JUST couldn't resist this final little shot at those who believe that shooting guns is somehow a "real sport"!!!!)

  11. --"I don't think that it is "B.S." to believe that any group - or government - is capable of becoming tyrannical. I'm using the cases of natural catastrophes - Katrina, Sandy - to show that even if you don't believe that we could be facing a tyrannical power regardless of origin, civilization can disappear in the wink of an eye for other reasons.--

Once again, in your "natural catastrophes" scenario here, this would be the LACK of our government's ability to insure order then, wouldn't it, and NOT the idea that some governmental entity is going to go "door-to-door" in order to enforce their will upon us, right?!

And thus, once again, the whole point I've been attempting to make in this thread that the people who use THIS imagined "tyrannical govenment" fear to press their point about THIS being the PRIMARY reason for the 2nd Amendment MUST be suffering from at LEAST a mild case of "paranoia" in their lives and/or a lack of "faith" in our COMPLETE Constutution, and AREN'T pressing the REAL reasons why we SHOULD have firearms available to us in this country, BUT with at least SOME restrictions as to the type and FIREPOWER available to us, so that those who like to go hunting, or like to go target practicing, or who just feel safer having them in their homes for home protection...as I DO, because I DO own a few guns for just THAT scenario, which MAY come as a shock to anyone who has read any of my thoughts in this thread..and UNlike your British model which you brought up.

However, one DOES have to admit that instances of gun violence on that li'l ol' island of theirs IS a fraction of what we here in the good ol' U.S. of A must put up with on daily basis...RIGHT?!

(...and I have a strong feelin' here that few Brits think that THEIR government is "tyrannical" in any measure...and in fact, many of the Brits I know or have communicated with over this here Internet can't seem to fathom our seeming obsession with guns and how many of us Yanks seem to somehow find "comfort" in that obsession in this so-called "Modern Age"!)

  12. finance, I often wonder if the reason for his scant filmography might have been due to his career flowering just as the need for movie Song-and-Dance Men who could also act was dying on the vine?

(..and yeah, I said "who could act", because I HAVE seen him act very well in a few roles where he doesn't use that "rubber face" of his...though admittedly it WAS primarily on the small screen)

  13. Thanks for understanding my(and Swithin's) point here, calvin.

And to answer your other worry here...IF there ever does become a time in our collective future when your imagined "social order breakdown" scenario happens, then it wouldn't be a case of a "tyrannical government" taking away our rights, would it?!

Nope, it would be some UNLAWFUL individual or GROUPS of individuals who would be attempting to do THAT in some imagined future distopian America, WOULDN'T it?!!

And thus...BOTTOM LINE...ONCE AGAIN...all this talk about why our 2nd Amendment supposedly is primarily in place because "we must fear our govenment" and/or "our guns insure our government fear us citizens"...IS nothin' but...wait for it here...BS!!!!!!!!

  14. THANK you Swithin, for supply a rational and well reasoned response to calvinnme's worry about some FOREIGN power invading the U.S. in the future and that fight coming door to door at him! You were EXACTLY correct in your response to to his worry.

You see calvinne, I had this same little discussion with a friend of mine on the tennis courts last Friday. He's a recently retired Colonel in the U.S. Army and was in Iran and Afghanistan. And, he attempted to make this very same point that you made about this "house to house" fighting thing but he used his experiences against the Mujahidin and other guerilla forces he's encountered during his tours of duty there, saying in essence that their owning of guns has been the reason they have had some success in their war against us.

My response to my friend was FIRST that we're talking an extreme case of Apples and Oranges here, as the Afghan people have little to no experience with western style democracy or the idea of a separation of church and state for that matter(as many OTHER nation's don't have in that part of the world), and thus they never have and probably never will understand our American governmental practices of Checks and Balances, BUT...and here's THE most salient point here I believe...IF he was using the thought that the Mujuhidin have been somewhat successful in fighting off the U.S. forces in their country because of their having guns at their diaposal, THEN what does THIS say about us and OUR government's latest adventure over there to modernize that backward freakin' country and their backward little ways, HUH?!

In OTHER words, doesn't THAT argument make us the owner of a "tyrannical government" RIGHT NOW??? And I THEN went on to ask my friend why he would involve himself WITH this presently so-called "tyrannical government" we have then, in THAT case. And, I THOUGHT that was what he was "worried about" in the FIRST place!!!

(...yeah, you guessed it...he had NO answer for that, OTHER than to agree with me that certain parts of world ARE indeed backward little hellholes where the people living within will probably never understand our concept of orderly change of leadership and all the other advantages we have in our country and that other people in MOST western countries presently share)

fetched and just doesn't pass the common sense test."

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ah HECK, Bild ol' buddy, I'll go even farther than THAT here!

The idea that the U.S. EVER will somehow be akin to the Soviet Union is not ONLY "far-fetched and just doesn't pass the common sense test", but ANYONE who believes that our nation with all it checks and balances inherent in the Constitution and with the history of WELL over 200 years of self-government would EVER become a country like Russia and then the Soviet Union, which was ruled by one either despotic or incompetent Royal after another, and then overthrown by an secession of EQUALLY despotic and incompetent "common" rulers because of the history and culture of their country precluded ANY concept of how America "works", THEN that person should immediately attempt to find at least SOME health care facility nearest to them in efforts to discover WHY the hell they're suffering from a VERY apparent and acute case of PARANOIA in their life!

(...or at least a MILD case of it, anyway...though I STILL would advise them to seek help in this regard!)
