>What kind of film would Richard Widmark & Jack Nicholson have made? TB, in regard to this question, I could possibly envision an older Father/Son conflict piece, something in the vein of the 1997 film AFFLICTION starring Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor that year James Coburn and Nick Nolte. I think both of them would've fit these respective roles quite nicely of a harsh and bitter elderly father and his middle-aged son, a small town Sheriff( "with issues" because of his upbringing) investigating the death of a man under suspicious circumstances...i.e. Jake Gittes.

Well, ALMOST anyway, Sepia ol' buddy. I don't recall ever seein' any "common complaint" at all posted in your thread yet that mentions the words "Valley Girl" in it!

LOL So Sepia, those times when your nurses would come into your room unexpectedly to take some more blood samples, did ya ever feel like you wanted to be the guy standin' up here? -
>Just guessing, Dargo, but since Frank is wearing the same hat and has his hair sort of in the same style, they may have been doing a routine in the movie. Ya think? Yeah Dothery, I pretty much thought so too. (...I just wanted to type out the words "Jane Wyman hairstyle" here, THAT'S all) LOL
-
And, Jackie is sportin' a Jane Wyman hairstyle there because..............???

>1968 Where Eagles Dare Aah, one of my "guilty pleasures" here. I've always loved how Burton and Eastwood seemingly take on the whole Wehrmacht singlehandedly, and by the end the only "casualty" among the two is a rather nasty bullet wound to Burton's left hand which he could STILL use to hang on to that ski lift gondola a thousand feet in the air while battling three bad guys! LOL
-
>Alec Baldwin is a Commie rat! LOL Another good addition here. (...however Andy, I'm pretty sure you want to place a couple of these " around that description of Alec you just typed, OR some folks might get the wrong idea of what YOU really think of Mr.Baldwin)
-
(...in all seriousness here...BOY is this hard for me, and as you know ...) Yep TB, I have to agree with most of the responders to your thread here. Because as "they say", "There are only seven basic plots to use in storytelling", the idea that ANY film made in order to be held in the highest regard(vis-?-vis "a Classic") is required to "break new ground" if you will, seems to me to be a very high standard of which I would venture to guess many many "recognized" film classics might fall short of.

>This topic caused a major stir here related to the Story of Film series. e.g. that many Hollywood movies are just silly fluff with the ONLY reasons they were made was to entertain and make money. Yep, good point here, James. AND, as I recall, the maker AND narrator of that series stated THIS very opinion in his documentary in the follow manner: "Many Hollywood movies?..are just silly fluff?.. with the ONLY reasons?... they were made?..was to entertain?..and make money? (...isn't that how YOU remember it TOO???)

Saaaay, WHO ya callin' a "SAP" here, dude???!!! Why, I thought my joke was REALLY clever and funn...errr...wait a minute. You meant "Second Audio Program" here, didn't ya! (...sorry...never mind)
-
JUST one of THE best Sports-themed flicks ever made, I might add!
-
>I think the only solution is for a TCM A la carte programming channel. So Ham! Would a Spanish language version of that be called "The TCM Tapas Channel"??? (...jus' askin')

Ya know folks, it's times like this when I fully understand why Fred has me on his ignore list!!! (...'cause knowing as I do how Fred sometimes finds it a little difficult to laugh at himself, I "could'a" maybe stated the below comment to him a little more "gingerly"...but HEY, then I wouldn't be Dargo, now would I?!) LOL
-
>I think he meant "I could have been a contender". With the contraction being "could'a'. Yep, of course he did. I think we've pretty well established that here, Fred. And he would'a...err..would of..err..WOULD'VE said it THAT way if it was Olivier that played Terry Malloy instead of Brando!!! (...but somehow I JUST don't see Larry in that role!) LOL

This thread reminds me of the message in a certain ex-teen idols comeback hit which he wrote after getting booed during a Madison Square Garden appearance. Sing it, Ricky...

>Instead, I had to settle for "marrying into" a family full of Hooterville-type individuals. Could be worse ya know, Sepia. You COULD have ended up "settling" for marrying into some other hayseed-type family from another one of those sitcoms on CBS's Monday night lineup back in the day. Un-huh, and THEN your Brother-in-Law would've been a pig. (...the REAL kind, NOT of course the kind that's just an embarrassment at the dinner table and/or the kind with chauvinistic views) -
>But I wonder if my assumptions are correct or as limp as a wet noodle. Well personally James, I'd say your assumptions might be somewhat valid. (...and of course then making your metaphorical "noodle" here cooked more "al dente" than actually "limp"...and as you would know, being married to a nice Italian girl like you are)

>While we're waiting, who is the clown whose favorite saying was "A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants"? Oh, I wish you hadn't brought this up, Miles. Ya see, I'm still after all these years attempting to get over the sudden and unexpected demise of "Chuckles the Clown" when he was dressed as Peter Peanut in that parade, and then when tragedy struck as that rogue elephant tried to shell him. Yep, truly a sad day in all of clowndom. -

>Any self respecting baby boomer should know clown no. 1. Doh, well OF COURSE...that's Bob "Capt. Kangaroo" Keeshan as Clarabell the Clown from the "Howdy Doody Show"! Just one left now, Miles. -
Yeah...well...don't go all gettin' the feelin' we've reached some kind'a consensus here, slayton my friend. (...'cause I sure haven't seen good ol' FredCDobbs weigh in with anything in your thread here yet!!!) LOL ***edit*** OOPS, I guess he DID down there, didn't he. That'll teach me be a such a smart-you-know-what, huh! And so slayton, I guess we HAVE reached that there "consensus" here after all, haven't we! (...boy, then this here place will never be the same now that THAT issue has finally been resolved and that we'll never again see all those threads around here complainin' about "all these here newer flicks they're showin' "...yep, I think I'll miss all that somehow) Edited by: Dargo2 on Jan 20, 2014 6:02 PM

Hmmmm...sorry Tom. I guess I've forgotten to warn ya about the inherent dangers of readin' too much of my stuff around here.
-
...AND, not only THAT, but if you avoid goin' to those theaters between the hours of 4-8pm and when the freeway system is a little less bumper-to-bumper, then gettin' to 'em is a comparable snap TOO, eh Iz?! (...sorry, just couldn't resist mentioning the thing I DON'T miss the most about my ol' hometown now that I'm comfortably retired in beautiful Sedona Arizona!)

I think you're probably right, Sepia...BUT because my Pop always called those old Monday night CBS sitcoms back in the day "hayseed", we never watched 'em all that much, and so I couldn't tell ya for sure here!!! LOL (...which in only ONE case would turn out to be my misfortune, as it would be many years latter and as an adult and in reruns that I'd discover how truly great and well-written "The Andy Griffith Show" was) -
Yep Sepia, and don't forget, IF Charley here on the left wouldn't have had his brother Terry here on the right take that dive in Round-4 that one time... ...then the latter "COULD'A been a Contender" TOO!!! (...though word is Terry was always a sucker for a good right-cross as evidenced by the look of his left eye here)
