misswonderly wrote: "(By the way, one thing I like about this website is that the posters here use words like "spurious".)" -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yeah, but what I CAN'T quite figure out here is what does the method Roy Rogers used to motivate Trigger have to do with all this??? Hey, SOMEBODY around here(my money was on finance) was BOUND to eventually go for this lousy pun here, so I just figured why not ME, HUH?!)

Thanks Tom! It's always good to see you around here, too! Yep, besides his turn in "Dawn Patrol", I think Flynn gave some terrifically sensitive performances in just about every film he ever made. Just the look on his face the guy could often generate in MANY films other than that one when something "hit him hard", could show the audience the depth of his character's feelings.

Ya know gentlemen, I think this current tact of delving into Flynn's private demons to explain why there might have been some denial on the part of certain critics of his era, and maybe even to this day, to acknowledge his obvious talents in front of the camera is somewhat misplaced. You see, in my estimation, IF that was the case, then I think it really all pretty much boils down to the fact that Flynn was a handsome action-movie star, and film critics have always tended to give short-shrift to film actors of this variety, unfortunately. One can go right down through each era of filmmaking and see where very talented actors such as Gable all the way through to Harrison Ford often haven't gotten their due because of this tendency by some film critics to pigeonhole certain actors because of this. (...just my 2 cents here)

Yep! I suppose one could use that, alright...even THOUGH that that's actually "the coward's way out"! LOL Point being, in the past I TOO have read some things on websites which I think have come from some real...well lets just say, "people with which I couldn't find common ground". BUT, never once have I ever put ANYONE on those "Ignore" lists. (...'cause eventually I'll usually find myself gettin' a good chuckle out o' readin' what they're sayin'...and no, it'll usually be that "unintended" sort o' humor, if ya catch my drift!)

I see the young man is catching up on his fellow Hooiser's literary works there, eh Joe?! I only make note of this because this reminds me of my mother, another Hooiser, who loved to recite by heart one of James Whitcomb Riley's most famous poems, "Little Orphant Annie".

Yep finance, that TZ episode was titled, "Walking Distance", and TikiSoo earlier mentioned it in passing. Btw, I found this YouTube video about Rod Serling, his hometown of Binghamton NY, and some of the carousels which dot that area of the country, and which according to this videographer probably served to inspire Serling's script for this episode of his TV series....another thing TikiSoo mentioned.... All true of course, however once again, I'll never understand why anyone wouldn't want to increase their knowledge of film history by purposely ignoring or by dismissing the intros supplied by Bob and/or Ben. To me, that's often HALF the fun of tunin' into TCM...especially when the film in question might not be all that "classic" to begin with. -

MissW wrote(in response to TCMfan23): "Second: How come you don't seem to like anything on TCM except the movies themselves? If it makes you feel better, I must concede that you are not the only person who feels this way. Quite a few movie fans who participate on this website have said the same thing from time to time, that they would prefer it if the station just ran the movies, nothing else." --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yep, MissW, that's somethin' I just quite can't understand, either. Ya see, very often when I see TCM is about to start a film which I've maybe already watched half a dozen times or more, I just quckly tune in to catch what Bob is about to say about it. It could be, and often is, somethin' I didn't know before. And then, once the film starts, I'll change the channel. So, now I wonder how many people do THIS??? -

And of course, it wasn't just the visuals and riding sensations which always made those old carousels so much fun, but also the aural pleasures in the whole experience...especially those which had an old-style mechanical calliope contained in the center of 'em. -

" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eeh! It's like I always say, Ham..."Give the unwashed masses BOMBAST, and they'll fall for it every time!" Nope, ya CAN'T be boring, dude, NO MATTER what your message is! (...I mean, why do ya think I use this freakin' uppercase crap all the time, HUH?!) ROFL

Yep, I'll second...err...I guess THIRD this now, about "Adventureland". I thought it a VERY enjoyable and well made little film. (...in FACT, I thought it was SO good that I didn't even mind Kristen Stewart's usual "****-smelling look" acting in it...THAT'S how much I enjoyed it!) -
Wait aimalac! You're kiddin' here, RIGHT?! Look dude, ANY person OR group of persons who use either or all of the following tactics to further their goals: Hate, Fear or Intimidation, DEFINITELY deserves ALL the freakin' ridicule they GET...PERIOD! (..and thus why I LOVE talkin' back to my TV set during these election years and ridiculing EVERY freakin' negative political ad I have the misfortune to catch...EVEN IF there's no one ELSE in the freakin' ROOM!!!) LOL!!!
-
Good point, finance. There was a whole lot of making fun of Nutsies...err...I mean NAZIS in those movies too, wasn't there.
-
Au contraire, finance. Word is Pope Benny is a BIG fan of that "Freaky Friday" remake! (...he especially liked the idea the producers of it had where nobody ate meat on the day it all took place...just fish)
-
Well yeah Ham, sure it was stupid, but of course it was supposed to be total farce, and probably best thought of as somethin' along the lines of Mel Brooks' "Springtime for Hitler" segment in "The Producers". (...btw, does this now beg the question: Would it be proper if neo-Nazis are upset with their own version of this "Blackface" here???...I wouldn't know 'cause thank God I don't know any of those kinds of morons personally!!!) ROFL

Hmmmm...lemme see here... "NOW BATTING FOR YOUR NEW YORK KNIGHTS...NUMBER-18 ON YOUR SCORECARDS, BUT NUMBER-1 IN YOUR HEARTS...RIGHT FIELDER JAY GATSBY!" (...yep, I think you might be right, Sepia!)

I'm "a little late to the Fair" here too , but I'd just like to expand a bit on filmlover's earlier mention of 1977's "Rollercoaster". It's been years since I've watched it, but I do remember being pleasantly surprised as to how well I thought it was done when I first caught on TV a few years after its theatrical release. I suppose my expectations weren't all that high before watching it, as I must have figured it was going to be just another one of those run-of-the-mill1970's disaster movies. There were some pretty big names acting in it too, with Henry Fonda and Richard Widmark in support of George Segal's lead role. -
I'm think I also remember something like this. As I recall, TCM showed "49th Parallel", "Northern Pursuit" and a few other Canadian themed films in a row one day a few years back.

I LOVE IT! Alec is on Letterman right now, and when he walked on stage, Paul and the band played Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot"!!! ROFL
