Wow clore! That kinda makes ya wonder how Mature's career might've been boosted a little while longer IF ONLY while he was playin' Hannibal in that movie he would've dropped the name of Spartacus, huh?!

(...though somehow I don't see Kirk willingly handing over that part to him!)

    ;)

  2. During my many years with the airlines working the ticket counter and the boarding gates at LAX, I "met" scores of 'em. Among the most memorable and the "biggest" were probably Bob Hope, Ginger Rogers, Kirk Douglas...the first two being very nice, and the last one...well, not so much.

I once met Vincent Price at a screening of "Champagne for Caesar" at the Director Guild Theater in Hollywood a few years before his death. Charming gentleman, as you would expect.

  3. REALLY ham?! Well then, I guess I must've MISSED those babies, 'cause in the last few months I'd have SWORN any thread that "dare" mention HER name all went the way of the Dodo bird eventually, dude!

(...well, there ya go I suppose, directcurrent...seems my "answer" here wasn't quite accurate, huh...though PLEASE don't automatically discount any OTHER answers I may have for you in the future...remember, as Joe E. Brown told Jack Lemmon on that old mahogany Cris-Craft runabout, "Nobody's perfect!")

    ;)

  4. Now WHAT the heck are you guys tryin' to tell our new friend directcurrent here, HUH?!

Directcurrent, HERE'S all ya gotta do to accomplish this: JUST mention the name "JANE FONDA" in your thread and VOILA!!!!

  5. Ya know Joe, I always DID wonder what Gene there looked like in his younger days and before hosting "Match Game"!

    LOL! ;)

  6.

Well Fred, that "makes me think she is crazy" is what I always thought this film was supposed to make you contemplate. IS she nuts, OR are there really ghosts at that manor.

It's kind of like how in "The Haunting", I believe the whole idea of the story is to ask the question if Julie Harris' character Nell going nuts or is Hill House really haunted.

  7. finance Wrote: "Are there real-life instances in which people are unable to speak for many years because of a traumatic childhood event? (Dorothy McGuire)"

    -----

Well finance, while the following shocking event didn't happen to the guy until he was an adult, Adolph "Harpo" Marx USED to talk in all the skits he and his brothers performed on the Vaudeville stage.

But THEN, on that fateful first day of shooting "The Cocoanuts" and when he accidently walked into Margaret Dumont's dress room by mistake and saw her completely nude, it was SUCH a traumatic event in his life, that...well...I THINK you know the rest of this story from here, don't ya???!!!

  8. Totally agree there, finance. That was probably THE most "confused" movie ever made!

I mean, was it supposed to be a Comedy, a Romance, a Drama, or WHAT?! Whatever genre or genres it was supposd to be or mixed as, none of 'em clicked at all. And, as much as I've always like Daws Butler voice, there was really no reason to at all to have him narrating this thing throughout.

Gotta say though, this film is example one of that often mentioned fact that Natalie Wood sure never appeared to go through that "awkward adolescent" stage, as so many other child actors have. Oooh-wee, was she ever a cutie in this one.

Btw, I did the math, and I couldn't believe David Janssen was only 25 years old when he played the Captain. He looked a lot older than that there. Of course, this could be one of the reasons the guy died at the "ripe young" age of only 48. Maybe he started at a very young age trying to out-drink William Holden!

  9. I didn't watch it earlier today TCMfan, however I do remember catching this version a few years back, and I recall thinking at the time that I didn't buy Ms. Powell in the role of Mildred for a second.

(...of course, that could be because I had already pretty much typecast her in my mind as only playing the whiny, teary-eyed and somewhat clingy type for years before seeing her in this role, a role which demands the cold and calculating type to play it)

  10.

Man! Gotta say, some of you folks around here would sure need a bunch of Purell!!!

Me...I can think of only one person who I would've like to have had the opportunity to shake his hand...Jimmy Stewart, 'cause few if any actors other than him could take the roles of "Mr. Average American Guy" and so often turn them into characters who seem interesting enough to spend two hours watching on film. And, from all reports, he always seemed like just a real down-to-earth guy in his personal life, too.

(...btw finance, that "Harold Russell" line down there was TOTALLY tasteless!!!...but then AGAIN, you KNEW I'd get a kick out of it, didn't ya ol' buddy!) ;)

    LOL

  11. Well willbe, NOT to totally dismiss your suggestion of "Rocky Horror", AND not to get into that whole "cult" definition can o' worms thing in THIS thread, such as a certain other thread got into recently ;) , I'd say "Rocky Horror" isn't quite a good example of what I was proposing here, because, as I'm sure you've already guessed by now, I'd say "Rock Horror" would fall more under the "Cult Classic" category than it would, say, the "Popular Classic" category enjoyed by "the masses", such as my suggestion of "Grease" would.

Though you still may disagree with me here, of course.

(...and now that I've given a second thought to my respose here, I might have to admit I've put too fine an edge on this)

  12. Getting back to my earlier posed question here of, "Has there ever been a classic or new classic movie musical using Rock music?"...unless I've missed somebody earlier mentioning it, I would say "Grease" might fit the bill here, though of course the music in it is more "Rock and Roll" than "Rock".

Btw, has anyone here gone to see the play "Rock of Ages", which is the basis of this new film about to be released and which has some pretty big names acting in it? I haven't, and so this is why I ask here.

From the commercials I've seen for the movie on TV recently, there seems to be a lot of major hit late-'70s and early-'80 Rock songs being performed in the story, and so I suppose, depending upon the story, the direction, the dialogue and the pacing, it could be pretty good.

  13. Nicely written piece about Garfield here, MP.

And, as you and Lori have said a number of times about the actor in various threads at this website, it truly is a shame that he does seem almost forgotten by too many people today. This is additionally unfortunate in my view because IF, as many believe, he WAS the first "Method" actor to make a name for himself in the Hollywood film industry, then my perception has always been that be was a better overalll film actor than the next two big male "Method" film stars who have gone on to become film icons and who's memory seems to shine as bright as ever among the public, Brando and Dean.

I say the above because I've always felt Garfield still seemed so "natural" in his scenes, whereas many times I think the other two actors named above seemed too "affected" in their performances, and many times, almost to the point of over-acting. And while it can't be denied that all three of these gentlemen contributed memorable performances on film, Garfield's, at least in my mind and as I've said here, was usually just a little "better" because of what appears to be his blending of the "Naturalistic" and "Method" styles.

    (...just my opinion, of course)

  14. Here's another one from your friend Drago...errr...I mean DARGO here, folks! ;)

I think this one is just about spot on...

  15.

Wouldn't you folks agree that the latest track in this thread almost begs the question: Can a classic or at least a "near great" Musical even be done using Rock music? Because, off the top of my head, I can't even think of one which would today has become known as such.

I think there may have been a few "good" to maybe even "very good" examples of such, but offhand nothing where a title springs to my mind.

    So, what say you?

  16.

Doug, as you probably know, John Goodman's role of Lawrence Woolsey in 1993's "Matinee" was a tribute to "schlockmeister" movie director/producer William Castle.

(...just thought I'd add that here, just in case there might be a few folks around here who didn't already know this)

  17.

    Re Ward Bond here, TB...

I think my favorite line or lines of his are in John Ford's "Wagon Master", and that one particular scene where he as Elder Wiggs, Ben Johnson as Travis Blue, and Harry Carey Jr. as Sandy have the following exchange with a Navajo indian....

[Travis Blue|http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0424565/]: [of the indians] Near as I can figure out, he don't seem to like white men.

    *[sandy|http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001013/]*: Yeah, he say's we're all thieves.

*[Elder Wiggs|http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000955/]*: Smarter then he looks!

[Sandy speaks Navajo, evidently translating what Elder Wiggs had just said]

*[Elder Wiggs|http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000955/]*: Don't tell him that, you fool! Tell him we're Mormans!

[the Navajos speak in their native touge, mutterring "Mormany" repeatedly]

    *[Elder Wiggs|http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000955/]*: What'd he say?

*[sandy|http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001013/]*: Say's the Mormans are his brothers. Say's they ain't big thieves like most white men. Just little thieves.

*[Elder Wiggs|http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000955/]*: Right complementery, ain't he?

That one particular line above where he sort of confirms the thought expressed by the indian about white men, "Smarter than he looks", always cracks me up big time.

Of hand, I'd say that this role of Bond's might've been his biggest and best of his long career, wouldn't ya say?!

(...btw, one addition note here...When I copied and pasted the above dialogue, I noticed something that I didn't know before, and that is that the great American athlete, Jim Thorpe has a role in this film...so, do you know if that was him in this scene?)

  18. Wow chaney. Gotta say I couldn't DISagree with you more. Ya see, I thought that ending was just about perfect because it covered two thoughts there...one being he was now at a new crossroads in his life, and the second one being that he MAY have just found a new love, and thus giving us hope that his character will live happily ever after.

  19.

    LOL!

Loved the come-back there, Lori...especially that whole "Lana/Postman" thing.

Yep, I guess I gotta admit that there may not be all THAT much of a resemblance there...except maybe, YOU gotta admit that their ears are very similar anyway, and maybe their noses too, right?!

  20. I agree with you, MissW. I thought the movie was pretty much great from beginning to end, also.

However, I have a friend who loves Coen Brothers films, but he found absolutely no redeeming value in that movie.

He said he thought it was basically done solely in the vein of "Violence for violence's sake", and that he found very little if any of the usual Coen Brother's "weird humor" in it.

  21. Yep slaytonf, I have to admit to the same feelings about the ending of "Suspicion" the first time I watched it, also. In fact, I must admit that I was kind of glad that Grant didn't turn out to be a murderer.

However, as you sort of suggest with you use of the phrase, "...and to my then unsophisticated mind", with each subsequent viewing of it, the more that ending just seems to bug the heck out o' me.

(...maybe we can just chalk THAT all up to my becoming more worldly, AND much more cynical as I age, EH?!) ;)
