Well of course, Tom. Everyone knows that back in the day, "Real Men" not ONLY shot lions but ALSO chucked a spear through 'em TOO!!! (...just ask Mr. Macho Man Hemingway...well, if ya COULD that is!) LOL
-
Moral of the story: Never p*ss off the wife while she has easy access to firearms. (...'cause it would be like taking Lorena Bobbitt to a cutlery store)
-
I'm glad you brought that up here, Swithin. Ya see, even though there were only six of 'em at these Tuesday night poker games, they would always pull up a seventh chairs...with of course the extra chair making TWO chairs to seat all of you-know-who's bottom!
-
Eeh! Contrary to all reports, all it was was a standing poker game on every third Tuesday night of the month with Tracy and Hepburn, and Cooper and Neal. (...albeit STRIP poker, but then again because she was SUCH a great poker player, the most Bette ever had to remove after a hand were her white gloves after that unfortunate time where her Full House of Aces over Eights were beaten by Brent's hand of Four Kings...now HEPBURN was such a BAD player that she would often be down to just her panties and bra before the game would break up!)

Well, I suppose he COULD have had Fonda wear a red jacket throughout the film and retitled it somethin' like..."Rebel With a Cause of Liberty for the Crew"!!! And then having him driving a '49 Mercury on that island with all the nurses on it would have been a nice touch TOO, I suppose. (...wait...this flick was supposed to take place in 1945, huh...make that a '41 Merc then...and chopped and channeled)

Thanks for providing the actual connection to at least four of 'em there, Fred. Your post enticed me to further research the original Broadway play version, and while I now previously recall hearing that Nolan won accolades for playing Queeg...Oy Vey...I was mildly shocked to learn that Henry Fonda played the part of Barney Greenwald! I would've thought Fonda once again would've been better cast as the second in command(Lt. Maryk) on THAT ship also, and the cause for the court marital in this play.

Yep, that's all them, alright! And who all starred in that little remembered movie titled, "The Two Mister Lincolns Witness the Prosecution of Eve Harrington for Murder My Sweet." (...well, everyone but Nolan and Hodiak, that is...I figured this dumb joke's punchline was already too long, ya see!)

SOUTHERN ACCENTS FROM TWO CRUSTY NEW ENGLAND ACTRESSES
Dargo2 replied to AndyM108's topic in General Discussions
So Andy, did watching Bette open with the Southern accent on that old Dick Cavett interview segment shown last night prompt you to post this? (...btw, while I enjoyed the Carson interviews TCM showed, you can't beat those much longer Cavett show interviews for many more insights into those stars of yore, can ya!) -
>Let's face it folks. This film is much too long at 2 hours and 37 minutes. It is shown too often. It is not interesting. It is boring. And not many people will watch it. Well folks, I guess there goes ANOTHER one off the ol' "Classics List" around here, EH?! (...and besides, it WAS made after 1960 TOO, ya know!!!) LOL

"IMPROBABLE"??? Ever watched "Where Eagles Dare"? A movie with a very similar premise, and where Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood kill HALF the German Army while Clint goes unscathed but Burton sustains a minor bullet wound to his hand for his troubles, but STLL can hold onto the side of a ski lift gondola while killing three bad guys a thousand feet in the air during its "thrill-packed ending"!!! LOL (...now THAT'S "improbable", dude!!!)

Oh, that face, that fabulous face II - Post 1950's. Whose is it?

Wow! That was quick, lavender! Yep, that's her. And don't those two ladies look a lot alike? -

LOL Good one, Sepia! Btw, doesn't Miss McRae look a lot like this other actress here? Can you or anybody name HER here? -
Okay MissW.."New Theory" time...well, I DID say I'd get back to ya as soon as I came up with another one, didn't I?! You're not a big fan of any movies directed by guys who wear eye-patches!!! Well, wasn't it you who once said Nicholas Ray was way overrated??? Wait, now that I think about this again, I think you ALSO once said you liked a lot of stuff Raoul Walsh made, so THAT can't be it, huh. (...sorry, never mind then...I get back to ya again)

TomJH did a nice little write-up and heads-up on this film yesterday, browne... http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?threadID=170553&tstart=15

The last time I watched this flick I fell asleep during it, which led to the police not believing my alibi. (...you have to be a real Dick Van Dyke Show fan to get this one)
-
Shouldn't you have finished that line with the word "Ma", FlyBack??? (...btw...you should hear my Hank Fonda impression...it's REALLY good!!!)
-
>I guess I like less talk and more action. When people talk too much it's annoying. Even when it comes to romance I like touch more than talk. Well, in THAT case, our boy finance must REALLY intrigue you then, EH?! (...though of course, there's no word on how "touchy-feely" he really is in person...word however is you'd FIRST have to pry him off those exercise machines to get any action!!!) Dargo2 replied to Kid Dabb's topic in General Discussions
That would be a very young Peter Pan there, Miles. (...aka Mary Martin) -
I suppose I can see most of your points here, cb, but THIS one had be scratchin' my head a bit... >Henry Fonda talks too much in all his movies. Soooo, I guess "The Grapes of Wrath" might've been an even better movie in your estimation IF John Ford would've just cut down Hank's dialogue at the end to somethin' really simple like, "Don't worry Ma, I'll send ya a card every Mother's Day. Bye now!"...RIGHT?! LOL
-
Sounds interesting, Tom! So...sort of a "Who Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" meets "Mogambo", ya say, huh?! (...I'll be sure to catch it...and thanks for the heads-up)
-
You're welcome, Joe. Nice to see that worked for ya!
-
Yeah, I can see the "14 months" line gettin' the biggest laugh, but like I said earlier, MY new favorite line is, "Better stay out of B-29s, Frank." ! (...or whatever the exact line Powell says there...you probably know, doncha?!)
-
Sure hope you have one o' those long high-fashion model-like necks in order to sport THOSE babies around, Hibi!!!

In MY case that all depends upon if the "hokey-ness" is also presented with a "knowing wink of cynicism". Case in point, I know "It's a Wonderful Life" is "hokey", BUT somehow Capra puts just enough of that "knowing wink of cynicism" into his movie in order for me to believe he's not totally pressing an agenda about the "attributes of wholesomeness". And of course, many of Billy Wilder's comedies which I also love were presented in this manner. In other words, it(the cynicism) leavens the schmaltz to a palatable enough level so as to where I can somewhat believe these stories have at least some basis in reality, and thus they hold my interest.
