  1. YEAH?! Well, you think YOU'VE had it tough, Blondie?! Try bein' an exceptionally good lookin' GUY!

Uh-huh! I can't BEGIN to tell ya how many times in MY life people have asked me THIS question:

"How can you know all this stuff and ALSO be so witty? 'Cause you certainly don't LOOK like a nerd or a comedian!"

    LOL

  2. >The words "dignity" and "mammy" don't belong in the same sentence. How can you be dignified when you're a mammy? A freaking mammy? I don't expect people like you to agree with me

Well CS, as our mutual friend Sepiatone pretty much just explained to you here, THIS phenomenon would be classified under the heading: "Product of The Times", and when the term "Mammy" was a quite commonly used term to describe "house slaves" who would often rise the children of the privileged Whites in the Antebellum South. And so, JUST because the McDaniel character's name was "Mammy" does NOT automatically imply that her character could NOT be infused with some measure of dignity!

C'mon, you really know all this, doncha???

And thus, GIVEN "those times", then I suppose I must ALSO reply that it appears "people like YOU"(and who unless I've mistakenly gotten the idea that you are a "person of color" because of the site name you've chosen) might THEN be overly inclined to automatically dismiss this movie without ever watching it all the THROUGH!!!

(...which of course is the REAL shame of it all, because there is usually NOTHIN' in all the world that's MORE a shame than people of ANY color who are soooooo reflectively defensive that they close their minds off to any idea that they at first blush find objectionable and BEFORE investigating an issue further!!!)

  3. >The role and the performance are one in the same. You can't separate the two. There was NO dignity in those roles. Tell you what, take Hattie McDaniel out of that role and put an older Bette Davis in it, would you all stand for Bette Davis shucking and jiving and yassiring Blacks in their 20s all while they treat her as some blithering idiot? No, no one would stand for that and no one would be dumb enough to call that type of acting dignified or legitimate.

Sorry CS, but you are SOOOOOO wrong in your assessment of the Mammy character being akin to the Prissy character in GWTW! Yep, SOOOOOO wrong!

Heck, you yourself just admitted down there somewhere that you've never watched that flick all the way through, didn't ya?! Uh-huh, when you stated that you weren't familiar with the "stair scene". So then how the heck can to state with such certainty this opinion of yours? Because IF you would ever watch this movie all the through, then MAYBE you'd see that McDaniel plays the character of Mammy with MUCH dignity. That's right, I said MUCH dignity, because she NEVER "shucks and jives" in this film. Nope, she stands up to and speaks the truth to that white little b*tch Scarlett a NUMBER of times in this thing. And not only THAT, but Rhett ALSO states in it that Mammy is one of the few people he wishes to gain HER respect of him. HECK! for THAT matter, Rhett continually shows that he had MORE respect for Mammy than he has for the sad-eyed and pathetic Mr. Ashley Wilkes!!!

(...and so, the next time you or ANYONE regardless of their skin tone wants to state your or their opinions about a film, ANY film, it MIGHT be a good idea for you OR them to actually WATCH the freakin' movie before you or they DO so!)

OH, and one more thing here, cs...IF you might now think after reading this reply of mine to you that I have "some great love" of this movie, then once again you would be WRONG, 'cause I think it's a rather well done film, but THAT'S about it!

(...in other words, I AIN'T no "Jake in the Heartland" when it comes to "loving" this movie!)

    LOL

  4. >I travel to Europe a lot since my wife is Italian and what you say is correct. One can spot the Americans for the reasons you give. Very sad reflection of our culture. But since it is their god givin right to be as they want to be, they end up being like they are.

    Yep, that's true, alright.

(...though I've always wondered if the locals in, say, Italy in this instance, look at these vacationing Americans and then wonder why with all the money Americans seem to have, WHY can't they afford to buy a freakin' MIRROR?!!!!)

    LOL

  5. I don't know if you travel internationally much Eugenia, but if ya don't, trust me here...you can almost without exception pick our fellow Americans out of a crowd of tourists almost ANYWHERE you may roam in this world.

(...'cause they'll usually not ONLY be the fattest ones you'll see, but they'll ALSO very likely to be the worst dressed ones TOO!!!)

    LOL

  6. What FlyBack?! Did you miss catchin' my answer to you about this very same question you recently posed in another thread, and where I replied to it with three...count 'em THREE fairly recently done(which of course means, WAY after the year 1969) and very WELL done war flicks with the titles:

    "Three Kings"

    "The Hurt Locker"

    "Zero Dark Thirty"

    ???????????

(...yep, maybe you just didn't see my earlier answer to ya, huh?!...well, you didn't acknowledge my earlier reply to ya, so maybe ya DID miss seein' it, eh?!)

  7. >An obscure point of reference might be someone like Franklin Pangborn. Always the Desk Clerk or some fussy, aggravated person. Do you ever wonder if he longed to play Rhett Butler or some other out of reach character?

Ummm...sorry yancey, but I'm havin' a little difficulty envisioning Franklin as Rhett Butler here....though MAYBE I could see him in the "Prissy" role instead!

(...uh huh, and delivering THAT character's most famous line as, "I'm so sorry Madam, but I have no idea about assisting in the birth of a child!")

    LOL

  8. Well, it says there that THAT one WAS made in the year 1972, now doesn't it, rewrite?

And so, because 1972 is a whole 3 years AFTER 1969, then "of course" by "SOME folks' " definition, it "ain't no good", RIGHT???!!!

    LOL

(...and so would you PLEASE stop askin' all these kinda "dumb questions" around here, dude?!!!) ;)

  9. >Yeah, Jack(Carson) definitely had a few pounds to loose (LOL)......

Hmmmm...ya know Hibi, come to think of it, might the topic Jack's backside make for a thread which could challenge that of a certain other actor's you know of??? ;)

Yeah, maybe one of those "versus" type threads?

(...can't ya see it now?!..."And In this corner, weighing in at.....")

  10. >Lets see a remake with Iraq the new setting.

I thought 1999's "Three Kings" was a very well done film which spotlighted the "absurdist" viewpoint of that war and in a similar manner to how Coppola presented his view of the Vietnam War.

    >How come Hollywood stopped making war movies anyway?

What about "The Hurt Locker" and "Zero Dark Thirty" ? They're both fairly recent films...and GOOD ones, I might add.

  11. True, and good points all. However, in a screwball comedy such as "My Favorite Wife", I've always thought these sorts of plot points to be much more acceptable to overlook than in dramas. In fact, you're almost forced to accept them in screwball comedies in order to appreciate the films at all.

  12. Okay Mr.R, now MacMurray I can see...but Jack Carson???

Sorry, but Jack always seemed to me to look like the kind of guy who's idea of exercise was moving his head from left to right while watching the horses race at Hollywood Park.

(...'cause if he WAS into exercising, sorry, but his pudgy body showed little results of it...especially as he aged)
