Wait ham! I've just thought of another possible cause for Dick's car becoming this fiery infernal....and from which if I haven't mentioned before here yet that I'm VERY glad to hear Dick was able to escape.
Ya see, MAYBE this wasn't Jaguar's fault at ALL!
Now, you know how they often have those incidences of extreme "road rage" out there in La La Land?!(well, at least THIS old ex-Angeleno knows of 'em, anyway)
And soooooo, MAYBE these sorts of incidences out there have NOW progressed to the point that they're usin' incendiary RPGs INSTEAD of just your garden variety 9mm handguns when someone feels overly insulted by another motorist's actions?! AND, maybe Dick was just in the wrong place at the wrong time???
(...just a theory here, of course...as always, your mileage may vary)
-
I would think that it would have had to have started as an electrical short circuit somewhere under the hood(wait...it's a Jaguar, isn't it...I mean under the "bonnet") or under the instrument panel.
(...though WHEREVER it started, it might be time for Jaguar to update that there "Jaguar Safety" webpage you linked and by adding a disclaimer or two, EH?!)

LOL
-
Wow, you guys and gals are good!
(...now MY guess wouldn't been that what all those boys had in common was that my father would've said they all needed haircuts!!!)
LOL
-
>Rob Petrie in a car?
Why, SURE FlyBack!
Doncha remember when he bought that shiny new 1964 "Tarantula" sports car???
(...and much to Laura's consternation...though NOT as much to her consternation as that time he bought that little "Geronimo" motorcycle, of course!)
-
Hmmmm...Jaguar, eh?!
And here I thought Jags didn't use Lucas("The Prince of Darkness") electrics in their cars anymore!!!)
LOL
-
Btw Dothery, I couldn't agree more with your take on "Our Very Own".
Being adopted as an infant myself 61 years ago now, one of my earliest recollections was of my parents telling me of my adoption, and the manner in which they explained it to me.
The way they did it was to almost make it sound as if I was 'extra special' and wanted by them to such a great degree that it instilled a lifelong 'pride'(for want of a better word) in the circumstances of my becoming a member of the family.
(...and thus I TOO remember thinking the very same thing as you the first time I watched this flick when I was about 14 or 15 y/o on some movie matinee TV program in L.A....yep, I remember thinkin' somethin' along the lines of: "WHAT the hell is wrong with this Blyth chick? Hey you spoiled brat, get OVER IT already and be PROUD of your parents!")
-
Yeah, and let us not forget how the fortunes of Hostess Twinkies seemed to take a decided downturn after Ann stopped hawking them on TV, TOO!!!

(...coincidence?...YOU be the judge!)

Whaddaya talkin' about..."back on topic"?
Heck, I "slandered" the poor guy what with all that talk of "Collagen injections" here, now didn't I?!!!
LOL
-
>Had you been vain, you would have worn sunscreen and taken better care not to have lines LOL Now finance on the other hand......LOL
Oh, so you've also heard about all those collagen injections he gets at that "doctor's" office next door to that gym of his too, have ya?!
(...yeah, evidently everybody already knows about that!)

LOL
-
Hmmmm....sounds like somethin' browne1 should immediately be notified of, if ya ask me!
All complaint in these regards should of course be directed to him/her for further review.
(...but sorry calvinnme, I'm unfortunately much too busy at the moment to take care of this for ya, so you'll have to do it yourself)

-
Hmmmm...and here I would've thought TCM would've held this one back for August 32nd's George Nader SUTS day...and when the classic "Robot Monster" will be shown starting at 8pm EST...okay...8:04pm EST and after Bob Osborne tell us the story of how the idea of the gorilla suit and the diving helmet would all come together!!!
(...which btw word is they're ALSO gonna show his cousin Ralph's "Unsafe At Any Speed" short subject film right afterward...though word ALSO is that all members of the Corvair Car Club of America are gonna boycott TCM for the day because of it!)
-
Sooooo...in essence you're sayin' Redford isn't NEARLY as vain as I am, HUH?!
LOL

-
Can't disagree with anything you just wrote, James.
It's just that in these sorts of "close calls", I think "erring" on the side of the star's behalf isn't such a bad thing in almost all cases, and especially if these second tier stars did actually headline some lesser known or little remembered films during their careers.
(...and in fact, some of those "lesser known or little remembered films" are sometimes what puts the "fun" in this whole SUTS thing, because those tend to be the films which are a little less shown on TCM, and occasionally they turn out to be a "pleasant surprise" to discover or rediscover)
-
I think I know what you're talkin' about here, Lavender.
Just last week my wife purchased one of those enlarging lighted mirrors for our bathroom counter. And so I've stated using it to shave.
And, ooooh-WEEE! How that baby shows every little crease in MY face now makes me think of how I should have DEFINITELY started using sunblock YEARS before I did and before hittin' the ol' tennis courts under all that SoCal sun back in the day!!!
LOL
-
>The school building and yard look like the one in The Blackboard Jungle. They were both M-G-M films and done just a few years apart.
THAT'S why it looked so familiar!
Good catch there, John. I'll bet you're right!
-
Yeah, I suppose you're right here. I seemed to have jumped from "boyish looks"" to "baby faced" here, huh.
Alan Ladd also had those same "boyish looks" before the Demon Rum took it's toll on him...with coincidentally both Ladd and Redford once attempting to portray Jay Gatsby in film, and which now that I think of it, the latest film portrayal of that character being the "boyish looking" Leonardo DiCaprio.
-
Hmmm...I never thought of Redford as having a "baby face"...not with that jawline of his.
I've always though him more the epitome of "WASP Preppy-ness"...and which of course served him especially well in "The Way We Were".
-
In the prison flick I'd say you're right, finance. However, in "Slander" I'd say her screen time is probably on a par with Johnson's or Cochran's.
And to be frank myself here, before her SUTS day, I might have agreed with you about her 'deserving' this tribute, but after watching or re-watching a few of her films that day, I had a slight change of heart after noticing she did seem to carry enough of the load in many of the movies she was in and enough to maybe 'deserve' her day in the TCM spotlight....and even though I was never the biggest fan of hers.
-
>...I've always liked "boyish looking" men !
Big fan of Audie Murphy movies, are ya Twink???!!!

LOL
-
Yeah maybe, and even with that "boy-next-door" face o' his, he could have possibly concentrated on playing tough guy or seedy character roles.
(...I mean spendin' time in the L.A. County Jail didn't do Mitchum's career any harm, RIGHT?!)

-
Whaddaya mean, "SECOND Childhood", Twink? The wife keeps tellin' me I've never completely gone through the FIRST one yet!
(...though truth be told, I'm pretty sure it was my "boyish charm" which enticed her to me in the first place, and so I've just always chalked up her frustrations in this regard about me under the heading, "Thou doth protest too much"!)
-
Yeah, we've HEARD about that time you were on the Bozo Show!
(...now tell us, was it REALLY necessary to tell him to "Cram it clown!"???)

LOL
-
Well, ironically, and if my own dearly departed father is any sort of indication in these matters, the older you'll get, the more vividly "Romper Room" will become a crystal clear memory of yours, BUT it'll become harder and harder to remember what you had for dinner just the night before!!!
LOL
(...yep, by the time the old guy was 80, he could probably tell ya PRECISELY what he did August 19th, 1928, BUT ask him if he'd eaten anything today, and he'd give ya the answer, "Yeah, I THINK so!"...and he was a pretty sharp cookie all the way to the end!!!)
-
Yeah..."Kiddie Crack"! LOL
Though as I recall, the whole 'Do-Bee/Don't-Bee' thing was from the program "Romper Room".

Dick Van Dyke escapes firey death.

Good try, Mr.R, BUT word has it that Gage and Desoto have been retired and drawing a healthy pension from the L.A. City(or was it County?) Fire Department since 1994.
(...and with Gage now living comfortably up in Lake Arrowhead with his 3rd wife, and with Desoto still residing in his Encino residence with his first wife...though there's talk that HIS wife has been spending WAY too much time lately at Freddy's Bar and Grill on Ventura Blvd while imbibing WAY too many dirty martinis by herself on this one particular barstool)
