Well, I don't know about the whole "salad" thing here, BUT I'd say IF we weren't allowed to talk about "foot-stomping", then THAT would pretty much put an end to any discussion about the "I Love Lucy" episode where she's helping make wine in Italy, RIGHT?!

Yeah MissW, I remember laughing at "The Big Salad" episode on Jerry's sitcom too.
And so to answer why I didn't "grace" you
with an additional reply after you poo-pooed my "theory" as to why you find this film "not funny" was...well because...THAT was the ONLY "theory" I HAD, and I wasn't all THAT convinced that my "theory" was right in the FIRST place, and so I didn't have any "fallback" position to take in order to further "debate" you on this issue!LOL
(...but you can be sure as soon as I come up with ANOTHER "theory", I'll get back to ya forthwith!!!)

So, you're sayin' that Powell was best when not playing a character which required more(and sorry for usin' this word here) "gravitas"? Is that about it?
I dunno. As I recall, even though he acted as if he was very often "three-sheets-to-the-wind" in his most famous role of Nick Charles, I always thought he realistically portrayed THAT character having more "gravitas" than any other character in those series of films....though maybe because he was the one who always found the culprits of the crimes.

Aah, but IF we would say take HALF our forces and align 'em in a 90 degree angle from our OTHER forces, then MAYBE we can catch the Powers-that-be around here that won't listen to us in some kinda crossfire-type action!
(...ya see, I KNEW watchin' that there Military Channel occasionally whenever "North by Northwest", "Some Like It Hot" and the rest of those flicks they show around here umpteen times a year, would eventually teach me somethin'!)

Yeah, I remember the "Hats" line in that Seinfeld episode makin' me chuckle a bit too.
So fair enough. You say you just don't buy him as "the voice of reason" on board that ship, and I say I do.
Looks as if we're just gonna have to agree to disagree here, huh.
(...and NOW as I recall, this is exactly how our LAST conversation went about this subject...and so hopefully I'll remember this the NEXT time the topic of this flick comes up so as not to ask ya for yet another explanation about this...gotta WARN ya though, my memory is gettin' worse and worse everyday!)

(...actually, the funny part about your statement here is that as far as I could ever tell, Roberts NEVER throws the fact of his college education in Morton's face...nope, it's Morton's feelings of past resentment at "college boys" in general and his OWN insecurities that motivates his actions)

Ya know MissW, it's been wrackin' my brain a bit as to why you don't think the comedy in this film is all that funny...and then it hit me.
I'm thinkin' it MIGHT be because you were never in the Armed Forces. And I'm thinkin' this because I think this film and the characters in it could maybe be analogous to the WWII G.I. comic strip characters of Willie and Joe which were created by Bill Mauldin, but in this case a naval version of them.
Now, I remember my father, a WWII G.I.(and a real character himself, I might add
) just LOVED those guys and thought them hilarious, and of course this was most likely because he knew firsthand of the often absurd situations those in the Armed Forces lived through during that war and how well Mauldin captured the feelings and essence of the average G.I.'s frustrations. And so, I would think some with none of this firsthand experience to draw upon might often be a little less inclined to appreciate this type of humor.
(...so, whaddaya think?...might I be on to somethin' here or not?...it's your call)

Okay, now that I get it isn't Powell overall that you don't care for, though I think I already knew that beforehand, what specifically is it about Powell's performance in this particular film you've always found wanting?
(...ya know ol' buddy, I think we've had this discussion before, but I'm sorry I just can't seem to remember the specific points you might have made back then, so please tell me again if ya would)

Funny, and here from watching Wayne walk around in some of his earliest movies, I thought he walked just fine BEFORE meeting Paul.

Thanks, MissW! Good pick there. I don't think I've watched the concert film 'The Kids Are Alright", and this very last performance of the Keith Moon's(man, could he ever bang those skins!) since it hit the movie theaters back in '79.

I wasn't comparing the two songs, MissW. I only mentioned the song "Won't Get Fooled Again" because you earlier made that very statement in a post about this website's new look.
(...and sorry, but YEAH...most of the nursery rhymes that I'VE ever heard are pretty darn sweet...well EXCEPT of course for the one's Morticia sang to Pugley and Wednesday on occasion!)

I know, finance. And I thought of you and your dislike for Powell in this thing JUST at the moment I mentioned earlier he said the "B-29" punchline and when I laughed out loud...and then went on to think HOW in the world can finance not find Bill Powell's performance up-to-snuff in this baby? HOW???
(...and THEN I went on to think that there's probably no way in hell he could ever express his thoughts about this in only one and if we're lucky TWO complete sentence , and thus I'll probably never REALLY know the true underlying answer to this!!!)

Nah, I just found it on Google Images. It was an ad for Halloween costumes, though I gotta admit I DID sport a haircut and a mustache similar in that style there back in the day of the leisure suit.
(....never wore the platform shoes though, as I recall...I was more the Italian loafer sort...shoes that is!)
