  1. Yeah, I always thought that ending seemed tacked on for dramatic effect also, 'cause even back in the '60s and before Corporate America didn't run everything like it does today, company reps from Halliburton and the like would STILL have had the ear of a President enough to get him to listen to the thought of somethin' like...

"HEY, now HERE'S our opportunity to get the American taxpayer to rebuild Moscow while we make a pretty decent profit on the side! Now THERE'S a "win-win" for EVERYBODY Mr. President! Well everybody BUT the American taxpayer that is of course!"

    LOL

(...btw FlyBack, the REAL problem with "Fail-Safe" is that it lacks great dialogue such as the use of lines like, "precious bodily fluids"!!!)

  2. Well SURE I do...just like ANYBODY who watches a lot of TCM does.

BUT, that doesn't mean I wouldn't watch "Raiders of the Lost Ark", or "Pulp Fiction", or "L.A.Confidential" or "The Silence of the Lambs" or "Heat" or "Fargo" or "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" or a whole SLEW of "more modern" movies over and over again IF TCM would show THEM uncut and commercial free as much as they show "North by Northwest" or "Casablanca"!!!!

(...in OTHER words, once again, your PREMISE IS FLAWED, my dear!)

    LOL

  3. Well Twink, I think I've watched that "time capsule" of pampered upper middleclass women of the 1930s all backstabbin' each other(with the exception of the "nice ladies" that is) in hopes getting men or the men back in their lives, approximately 3 or 4 times in my life.

And to tell ya the truth, 3 or 4 times as been enough for me! Witty dialogue or NOT!!!

In FACT, the more I've watch THAT movie, the more it reminds me of what I hear those "The Housewives of ......(fill in the blank with a city's name)" TV shows are supposedly all about BUT with less cursing!!!)

    LOL

  4. Well Twink, as always, I DO see your point, however I still think your point has a flawed premise. And the reason I think it does is that you used the word "quality" to pretty much define what YOU apparently believe to be almost ALL films from your "sacred era" of the '30s and '40s.

And, as many of our friends around here have previously stated, not ALL of the "Programmers" and B-movies from that bygone era were THAT filled with "quality". Nope, very often the ONLY thing that can be said of them is that they might be viewed as some sort of a "time capsule".

However, I DO agree with you that for TCM to show more modern BUT lower quality films would be a mistake, and THAT would be because many newer films OF quality become known as "instant classics" and thus I believe showing THOSE would be consistent with the name of the "Turner CLASSIC Movies" channel.

(...now, do you see MY point?...naah, you probably still don't, do ya)

  5. >I prefer the Claudette Colbert version, mostly because I find it more realistic, and less of a stylized soap opera. I also prefer Colbert to Turner. But, they are both entertaining, well-made films.

Pretty much my thoughts too here, John.

However, I know my own dearly departed mother(who btw I never denied knowing LOL) always preferred the remake, most likely due to Mahalia Jackson's solo at the funeral.

(...I think she had every one of her records she ever made)

  6. >I said classics from the 60s-00s would be ok, but just random films from that era are mostly not very good. :)

WOW!!! I THINK we might have a BREAKTHROGH here, FOLKS!!!

BUT of course in the meantime, we are all still welcomed to watch all those "not very good" films from the bygone era, 'cause THOSE are "fondly remembered".

(...but hey, at least we got a LITTLE "concession" from Mr.Dobbs here anyway, RIGHT???!!!)

    LOL

  7. Well, okay MissW. Ya want my opinion about "Imitation of Life"? Then here it is...

I don't care if it's Louise Beavers in the '34 version OR Juanita Moore in the '59 version...I could never STAND their little "No problem. I'll be satisfied with taking the rear seat of the bus" routine. Nope never.

Ya see if I WERE that black mother I WOULD at first attempted to instill in my kid some self-respect and pride in her heritage. And if THAT didn't work, I would have tanned the little girl's backside each and every time she made a derogatory remark about her heritage. You could do that in those day, ya know!

(...aaaah, but then again of course, IF Beavers OR Moore would've acted in THAT manner, then we really would have much of a story, huh!)

    LOL

  8. >PS: Yes, I'm a wine connoisseur (but my friends just call me a wine snob!).

So James...Do you use the word "prosaic" a lot whenever you find a certain wine lacks "complexity"?

(...'cause if ya DON'T, then your friends are wrong, and you ain't no "wine snob", dude!!!) LOL

    ;)

  9. Hmmm...well Twink, here's some "homework" for ya then...seein' as how I don't have the time or inclination to list 'em all for ya.

Type into your computer's search engine the words: "Oscar Best Picture nominees since the year 2000", and then investigate either via Wikipedia or the IMDb website any of those titles listed that might sound interesting to you.

(...though granted, the phrase "interesting to you" WOULD imply you might have to "stretch the parameters" of your "comfort zone" a bit)

  10. Yeah, that's a good point I suppose. I mean, even the usually reliable Audrey Totter makes me cringe a bit while I'm watchin' HER in that misfire of a movie.

(...but still, Jayne makes Totter's performance seem like a sure bet for the '47 Best Actress Oscar...THAT'S how bad I always thought she was in it...Bob Montgomery's failed directorial attempt at being clever or not)

  11. Ahem...sorry Twinkee, but knowing that ONE movie made over 30 years ago now was a good movie(and yes "Missing" is a good movie) does NOT necessarily mean ANYONE "knows his movies".

(...ESPECIALLY if they're not familiar with all the good ones made in THIS millennium...and YES my dear, there HAVE BEEN some good movies made since the year 2000, believe it or not!!!) LOL

  12. >But I wonder...how did they know about the Canadian surrealist porn?

Oh, those movies you starred in back in the day are ALL over the internet, MissW...especially that one where you're laying nude over that tree limb like a melted watch while that dwarf is dancing all around you.

  13. >I know. But she had a good start in films. Not sure why it never went anywhere. Maybe she was more interested in being Mrs. Allen........

Hmmmm...well Hibi, as much as I always liked Jayne on TV game shows(and I remember my father had a real crush on her), I'm sorry but I always thought her performance as the psychotic murderess in "Lady in the Lake" was pretty laughable. And so, maybe the studio producers saw it that way too.

    (...just a guess, of course)
