  1. OH! Well now THOSE I DID all donate to the simian exhibit at the L.A. Zoo YEARS ago! (,,,and right before I started gettin' into that whole "Member's Only" jacket thing...ya know, there's NOTHIN' cooler than epaulettes!...well, at least I THOUGHT so for a while anyway)
  2. Loved the "James Mason in Dublin" story, Dothery! (...I suppose that's kinda like the ol', "Saaaay, didn't you used to be..." line, huh!)
  3. Naah! Contrary to popular opinion, I NEVER have loaned ANY of my padded motorcycle jackets to any simians...nope, NEVER! They're prone to stuff the pockets with bananas, ya know! (...though I have to admit I DID once let one of my octopi slip two of his tentacles into the sleeves of navy blue sport coat)
  4. >because if you're going to be pretentious, you'd better get your typing, spelling, and grammar right (not to mention your facts) Ahem, excuse me here, MissW, BUT the "highfalutin ten dollar word" you're seeking here would be: "punctilious".
  5. AND, I'm pretty darn knowledgeable about my hippopotami, my octopi AND the cacti I feed to 'em TOO! (...after I of course remove all the needles from the cacti, which contrary to what you might expect, really isn't all that much of a bother...ya just always have to remember to wear gloves, THAT'S all!)
  6. VERY good, my dear! In fact, now that I've looked at that pic again, I do believe it's the latter of the two chimps, and thus I shouldn't have said "that little guy" with the hairy face 'cause I think it is "Phoebe". (...and no, that wasn't part of the question...I just thought IF there might be any simians around here tonight, they might have felt "left out", THAT'S all!) Edited by: Dargo2 on Jul 14, 2013 10:25 PM
  7. ..and who ELSE there, Twink??? (...yeah, I'm talkin' about the little guy with the hairy face sittin' on Dave's desk there?...I know...do YOU?)
  8. The Fountainhead Jake in the Heartland Yeah, and just THINK... "The Onion" didn't even have to alter THIS trailer in order to make this FUNNY!!! I mean, talk about your simplistic ARCHETYPES here, EH?!!! LOL (...btw...I sure hope those words "simplistic" and "archetypes" I just used don't fall under that there "highfalutin ten dollar word" category here, 'cause I MAY NOT be able to ever live that down if they ARE!!!)
  9. Yeah, well, I suppose THAT'LL teach ya to not to use them there highfalutin ten dollar words around HERE anymore, HUH Sans!!! LOL
  10. LOL Well MissW, at LEAST you don't pronounce the "w" in the word "answer", anyway...'cause THAT of course WOULD BE weird no matter WHERE ya live! Btw, this reminds me of something that was goin' around the internet a few years ago in which there was a little "test" that would give you phonetic sound-alike multiple choice answers as to how one would pronounces certain words in the English language, and then after you finished, it would tell you where you were "from"...and it was pretty accurate as I recall. (...at least I remember being somewhat impressed that it pegged me as bein' a Californian, anyway)
  11. Yeah, I can see(and maybe "hear") that, John. Not a bad comparison at all.
  12. True. One of the most recognizable voices ever in film, to be sure.
  13. Nice write-up, Nora. Some good points there.
  14. Well, THANKS for that, Sans! But NOW I gotta ask: Where the heck were YOU back in '74 when I needed you to help me make sense of that flick, HUH?! (...uh huh...the Ukraine, THAT'S where, and NOT L.A....and a lot o' good it does me NOW, huh!!!)
  15. >Of course, there is also just plain dopiness, as in when people say "nu-cu-lar" instead of "nuCLEEar". Now MissW. I must inform you that NOBODY down here south of 49th says it THAT way since our Presidential election of 2008!!! (...AND if they DO, then it would ONLY be in the location of a ranch situated near Crawford Texas!!!) LOL
  16. Sorry dark, but in MY case, I just remember walkin' out the Avco Cinema Center Theater in Westwood CA back in '74 and thinkin' to myself..."Now WHAT the heck was THAT movie supposed to be all about???" (...though I DO agree with you about the "Bacall-esque" Ms. Rampling!...she ALWAYS smoldered in everything she was ever in, alright!)
  17. >Thank you for the kind words. I am now waiting to see if Mr. TopBilled will come back on here and rebut any of my reply to him. May have to wait on that for awhile since he..... well we don't need to go there. Yes, I have read with interest your replies back to TB. Sorry about that. I guess what I should have done was paid homage to you before I launched into that long dissertation. Quite alright, fx. No apology required here, my friend. (...though I DO have to admit that I WAS startin' to think that just like our friend TB, you TOO might have fallen into that old trap of thinkin' that JUST 'cause I joke around a whole lot around here, that my more "serious" comments on the boards aren't worth YOUR time to peruse and respond to EITHER!!!!) **** here!!!!
  18. WAIT! Wasn't the movie he hosted tonight "The Stratton Story"??? So, what's your beef here, dude???!!! (...oh...wait...it was "The Magnificent Seven", ya say?!...sorry, never mind then...I don't think Brynner OR McQueen ever go to the mound as either a starter OR in relief in this one, huh!)
  19. WOW John! I gotta say that THAT was probably the GREATEST "backhanded compliment" about an actor that I've EVER read!!! LOL
  20. >Making and marketing a prequel to the Wizard of Oz is a great idea. Oz is iconic. The vast majority of people in America have seen the movie. My guess is that this is the most seen movie of all time by all generations. The above is one of the reasons WHY the producers are making a prequel. Since that is a wise thing to do I fail to see why anyone would say that was dumb. Well, you'll have to forgive Sepia, James. Ya see I'LL BET when Sepia first wrote what he wrote in this baby, he was probably just thinkin' about that movie in which Sean Connery runs around in it lookin' like THIS... ...YEAH, Zardoz....which of course the viewer eventually learns IF they have the fortitude to stay to the end of this turkey that in some future dystopian society all the rules of conduct are based upon a misunderstanding of an old edition"The Wizard or Oz that's still around in that future. (...yeah, it's one of those "Soylent Green is people" moments!) Uh huh...now THAT was a "dumb" idea for a movie, wouldn't ya agree?!!! And soooo, I'll betcha ANYTHING that THIS was what was on Sepia's mind when he said what he said, THAT'S all. And wouldn't you admit that this would have been MOST understandable on his part???? (...well, at least that's MY present "theory" here, anyway...though yours as always are welcomed TOO, ya know...oh, and btw, IF in YOUR future you ever find yourself watching Zardoz and you've never watched it before, please accept not ONLY my condolences here BUT my apology for my lack of a "Spoiler Alert" during the presentation of my little "theory" here) LOL Edited by: Dargo2 on Jul 14, 2013 5:43 PM
  21. btw fx, I just want to say here that I read that LOOOOONG "dissertation" of yours right down there and I think you NAILED it, brother. ESPECIALLY that part about "some folks" occasionally gettin' overly AND needlessly defensive when their contentions are challenged. (...though of course all ya did was basically expand upon a lot of the stuff I've been sayin' throughout this thread, and so NATURALLY I would agree with ya there, huh!) Edited by: Dargo2 on Jul 14, 2013 12:25 PM
  22. >I think they could show it now. Why, I'm SHOCKED to hear such "sacrilege" coming from you, sir!!! LOL (...you better watch talkin' like this around THESE here parts, boy!...ya KNOW, some folks DO keep tar and feathers in their basement, AND rails CAN still be easily purchased at ANY Home Depot to this very DAY!!!)
  23. >As some will attest, this 2010 True Grit will be a classic one day, although I consider it a classic already. So fx, in that case, what year do you think it will be "acceptable" for TCM to show it? What, maybe around 2050 or so??? I mean I HOPE "you know" that ANY Classic "MUST BE" at least 40 years old to be even CONSIDERED for airing around here, and even THAT is probably pushin' it, 'cause as I'm sure you ALSO 'know", there haven't been any "classic movies" made since around 1970. (...and so, I sure hope they at least show the COMPLETE Ann Sothern "Maisie" series BEFORE they ever show Jeff Bridges donning that eyepatch, OKAY?!) ****
  24. My guesses as to why this seems to be are twofold here, Joe. First, the screenwriters of old are no longer or at least seldom around anymore who knew how to give great little dialogue to even the most minor characters involved with the plot. And secondly, the idea of watching "crusty old men" and "smart-mouthed old bitties" especially and who gave many of those old comedies those special little memorable moments has fallen out of favor in Hollywood's apparent attempt to cash in on the primary modern movie-going audience of today...the youth market. Nope, I have a feelin' most of that youth market just doesn't enjoy watching "those old people" on screen anymore.
  25. Well, ya KNOW you two, there IS such a thing known as "a happy medium" between two different styles!!! LOL (...though don't get me wrong...I DO most often enjoy BOTH of your styles around here...though admittedly it IS much easier to play off of finance's than yours, fx!)
