Steven Spielberg to remake The Grapes of Wrath
Dargo2 replied to FlyBackTransformer's topic in General Discussions
In all seriousness here, I don't think this is that bad of an idea. I mean, just look at the vast majority of movies out presently, most often little more than overly special effects-laden mindless pap. And so to take a true classic American piece of literature and to then attempt a new version of it in order to bring this story to a new generation(a generation that in most cases now days wouldn't sit through a B&W movie on a bet, and no matter HOW well Ford made it) AND maybe which might bring some new insights into the saga of the Joads, then I say...GO FOR IT! -
Well, I think the only person back in the day who MIGHT have ever considered Peter Jennings a "cad" COULD have been Richard Nixon....and during the time Peter was reporting the latest developments about Watergate on TV! LOL (...though I might have my timeframe a bit askew in regard to when Peter presented the ABC World News, as I know he was at first considered too young and inexperienced to be ABC's news anchor his first go around and was subsequently reassigned for a while before making a comeback in that role some years later)

Steven Spielberg to remake The Grapes of Wrath

Hmmmm...I wonder in THIS one if they'll have Tom Joad flying over The Mother Road on a bicycle and with a large Moon in the background??? (...I can see it all now..."Wherever there's a cop beatin' up a guy, I'll phone home, Ma!") -
"Spader"! Yeah, I'd say that that's a pretty good pick there, sfp!
-
Hmmmm....Douglas, "for lack of a better word, is good" in that film I suppose, Twink. However, other than that particular film, I don't think he's primarily known for portraying the "dapper, eloquent and sophisticated cad" such as George was and my pick of Alan Rickman is, wouldn't ya say?!
-
Yep TB, and after watchin' it the other night, I have to admit I personally gained a newfound appreciation for Jerry Paris' skill at ventriloquism! And here all this time I only thought of him as the wisecracking biker in "The Wild One" AND of course as Rob and Laura's next door neighbor! LOL (...though yeah, your point about this film being better than the rap it's taken over the years for inspiring the Zucker Bros' spoof is well taken)
-
YEAH?! Well dark, what I WANNA know is how ANYONE could besmirch the good name of SONJA HENIE???? Talk about your "TROLLS"!!!! (...just kiddin' John)
-
You now have me attempting to think of the last or most recent "George Sanders type" we've had in films, GG. The only one I can think of might be Alan Rickman. Yes? No? Or can you think of one that might come close to George in this regard? (...notice I said "come close", because as people have noted here, no one will or could ever top George in his ability to project the dapper, eloquent and sophisticated "cad" on screen, of course)
-
LOL Yeah Arturo, it's all just part of my plan to keep people off-balance! (...btw, how's the weather out there today in "Los Hangle-lees"?)
-
True, but remember...they've seem to have wasted a couple of millennia more than we ever did in the pursuit of it! LOL (...and so, sorry, but that's no excuse)
-
Sterling Hayden... AND, Sterling Hayden as a young boy...aka little Jimmy Hunt... (...yep, it's kinda like that thing I always say around here: "Joseph Cotten is REALLY David Letterman's DAD!") LOL

TCM, stop the Letterbox short, please

LOL Well, I have to say I wouldn't have a problem with all that, however, ya know that little motorcycle rally I've mentioned I throw every June that brings about 20-30 folks to our home here in Sedona...well ya see, my wife was just sayin' the other day how nice it is that we only do somethin' like that ONCE a year, and I gotta say I agree with her. BUT, tell you folks what...IF ya ever find yourself around this beautiful area of the country, you just send me a little ol' PM tellin' me when that'll be, and I'm sure we can work somethin' out. (...though the airfare will be your responsibility) -

LOL Yep, as long as ya love old movies, that's what really counts! -

Yeah, probably. (...but I'll betcha watchin' an itty bitty Peter O'Toole crossin' the desert in that Letterbox format on YOUR TV, isn't near as good as watchin' it on MY Hi-Def 50in TV screen!) -
Yep, admittedly, Bob's script DOES occasionally contain the factual error and/or goes a bit off on the seemingly needless tangent. (...though probably not surprising to you, that second little faux pas doesn't usually bother me all that much) LOL

Okay, then just stand at your mailbox for the next 10 days and that check(or "cheque", if ya wanna go all French here) o' mine SHOULD be in there by then. And AAH...No CHEATIN' now! Ya gotta stand by that sucker 24 hours a day! Okay, you can lay down next to it for 8 of those hours...I'll allow ya that. (...and no, I don't trust that there "PayPal" thing AT ALL, just in case you're wonderin') -

Uh huh...though not surprisingly as you also might have heard, word from the continent is he keeps getting mistaken for Jimmy Stewart. -
>I don't think he would be to much fun at a party. What if he got bored? Well, if you're sayin' what I THINK you're sayin' here sfp, then it's very simple. (...before the party, you hide all the pills in your medicine cabinet)

Oh, and Lavender...that guy Armstrong? Well, his first words were "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind"! (...yeah, sorry...couldn't resist that one either) -

Hey MN! Did ya HEAR? Lindbergh made it all the way to Paris! (...sorry, couldn't resist) -
BTW, have I ever mentioned to you folks that when I boarded passengers out of LAX for Northwest Airlines in a supervisory position and would work the night of July 4th, because our flights would usually be fairly empty on that evening, I would run a little "game show" at the gates? Yep, if I noticed the First Class section was fairly empty on a particular flight, I would make an announcement that the first person who could walk to me at the podium and recite just part of the first line of The Declaration of Independence would get a free upgrade. And to show you how successful our American educational systems are at enlightening its citizenry, it would usually be after at least half a dozen folks would walk up and say, "We the People..." before someone would finally walk up to me and say "When in the course of human events...". (...yep, makes a fella REAL proud to be an American sometimes, huh!) LOL
-
Yeah, well, I got a feelin' those folks over there are screwed either way! (...ya see, I keep thinkin' of sendin' 'em a copy of our Constitution, but for some reason I don't think they'd quite understand the whole concept, and so I never get around to it...eeh, it's saves me the postage, anyway)
-
"Oh YUCK! Isn't that the cable channel that shows all those lame old B&W movies?"

Well, just as long as they don't "pan and scan" out Arlene Francis too much, I'd be more than satisfied! AND as long as people would remember that the momentarily "panned and scanned" out Bennett Cerf was INDEED Bennett Cert and NOT Elmer Fudd, then that shouldn't present too much of a problem EITHER, wouldn't ya think? (...or as Bennett would say during the opening of each program: "And now, heahas ouwah Modawaytah, John Chawals Daly!") -
Yeah, I LIKE that idea o' yours here, finance. I could never get enough of watchin' that little cutie Susanna Hoffs and her big hair in that video, back in the day! (...and besides, it sure beats the heck outta watchin' on the news yet another country that in this day and age STILL can't seem to quite grasp the concept of "an orderly change of leadership", wouldn't ya say?!) LOL
