>Instead of uppercase letters, why don't you go the Elaine Benes route and use a lot of exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now finance, I thought you were MUCH more observant than this, ol' buddy!!!
Dude! Haven't you noticed my ADDITIONAL tendency to overuse not ONLY these -> "!", but these-> "?" babies TOO??????
LOL
(...oh, and btw folks, re "The Great Stone Face" Raft...SURE you're allowed to "find fascinating" anyone ya CHOOSE...but of course, my earlier point was much more somethin' such as John Huston's relief in discovering his good fortune to get a GOOD actor to star in his classic Maltese Falcon remake than someone like Raft who COULDN'T act at ALL!!!!!)

>I am sorry to say that I find it difficult to discuss this matter beyond the simple observations I have made. It is a path which must be tread lightly so as to not bring current politics into the discussion.
Oh, that's okay then. I'll do it for ya here then, my friend...
>Consistency has never been expected of politicians.
Now ya see, I know you're reasonably new to our shores, and so I can see why you might be a little unfamiliar with our recent Congressional goings-on. BUT, as far as I can tell in the last 20 years or so, those folks sittin' their behinds in that Capitol Dome have been nothin' BUT "consistent" in their inability to reach common sense middle ground solutions on a whole HOST of issues!!!!
LOL

And in addition here Sans, this whole thing has me thinking of what John Ford once told C.B. DeMille during that whole HUAC era.
As you probably know, DeMille reportedly went on and on during a meeting of top directors about how he feels about people who he felt were "un-american", and when he was done it's been reported that John Ford then rose from his chair and said:
"My name's John Ford. I make Westerns. I don't think there's anyone in this room who knows more about what the American public wants than Cecil B. DeMille?and he certainly knows how to give it to them(while looking at DeMille) But I don't like you, C.B. I don't like what you stand for and I don't like what you've been saying here tonight!"
And soooo, wouldn't ya think the LEAST that Jack Warner and/or ANY Hollywood studio chief (and ESPECIALLY if they were Jewish) could have done when any of those German distributors who came to L.A. to "offer suggestion" about how to cut their product for the German market, would have been to tell THEM somethiin' similar about THEIR new leader, and maybe add somethin' like, "So THERE'S our product, Fritz! Take it or LEAVE it!"
(...though yeah, that probably WOULD have hurt that particular market of theirs a bit, huh!)
-
>If the contact people with whom you have always dealt are fair and honest and keep their promises then it is easy to take their word that rumors are false and that detractors are liars as long as those contact people continue to deal fairly and honestly with you.
...and continue to write the checks for the product you supply, eh Sans?!
Sorry for the sarcastic comment here, but c'mon now, the crazy dude with the funny little mustache wrote that famous book of his in which he outlined his "belief" as to who was "to blame" for Germany's and the Western World's plight in 1925/26 and a whole 7 to 8 years before he took power in Germany. And so, wouldn't one have to REALLY be pretty darn naive to "suddenly find" the goings-on on a certain evening of November 1938, aka "Kristallnacht" to be "a face of something they never expected"???
(...in other words, at first blush about this topic, one almost HAS to think that this all pretty much boils down to a case of: "Business above ALL and as usual", wouldn't ya think?!),

Btw Jake, have I mentioned how I was absolutely SHOCKED that the great coach Greg Popovich in game 6 of THIS years NBA Finals didn't have his team foul one of the Heat players and send 'em to the line with 17 seconds left to go, and so Ray Allen couldn't get off that 3 point shot to tie it up and send the game to OT???
(...and where of course The Heat would unfortunately go on to beat the Spurs in THAT game and then win Game 7...or maybe I have already, EH?!...yeah, well maybe Greg never read Ayn's book, and so maybe THAT explains that too, EH?!)
LOL
-
Well, then it appears I "failed" then, eh Jake?! LOL
Though, I''m certainly glad to know that that oversimplified little "parable" of Ms.Rand's helped SOMEBODY to achieve their goals, anyway!
(...and that Mark could eventually win the NBA Title thanks in large part to his being able to afford some widebody rebounders and tough defenders on that team of his which for years were extremely lacking on those points!)
LOL

LOL
So, how'd I do, Jake?
(..."pass" or "fail"???)

>He is quite attractice and endearing mainly in THE APARTMENT.
Ya don't have to sell me on Jack's masterful portrayal of C.C. Baxter in probably my favorite film of all time, LP. However, and while please don't think I'm denying what your idea of "hot" in a man might be, I still using this example of one of Jack's characters can not imagine him as "sexy" in that role, and mainly because once again he's basically playing a guy with little backbone and who is used by others(i.e. a "doofus"). In fact, I was always of the mind that his basic lack of "sex appeal" was the very reason it worked so well in this film, and is why it takes so long for Shirley MacLaine's Miss Kubelik who pretty much doesn't give him the time of day until she comes to realize what a "nice guy" he is at the end of the film.
-
Hmmmm...now why am I thinkin' that somewhere along the line Rick, or somebody at least, calls Capt Renault "Frenchy"???
And...
>Bogie makes fun at him at the end of the movie when he tries to kiss him on both cheeks (something my wife makes me do!).
Yeah, that whole "double kiss" thing IS still "de rigueur" over there all over Europe, alright...and to this day is definitely a "fur-end" concept to us Yanks, huh!
-
>Just to push the Canadian content while we're on a roll with it: didn't Edward G. have some kind of connection to Canada? I can't remember what. Maybe not.
Yeah MissW. If memory serves, I BELIEVE for a short while during the '46 season, Eddie played shortstop for the Montreal Royals along side Jackie Robinson(no relation, of course) at second base, and JUST before Branch Rickey would use Robinson(Jackie, NOT Eddie once again) to break Baseball's Colo(u)r Line.
(...Eddie couldn't hit the curveball ya see, and thus the reason for his very short career on the baseball diamond...OH, and btw, it was Hank Greenberg who broke the Anti-Semitic Line in Baseball, 'cause he COULD hit the curveball, just in case you might be wonderin' about that too)
-
>Dargo, I would suggest that possibly you found Lazslo more coloUrful on your last two viewings of the film because you were enjoying the contents of an alcoholic beverage at the time. The right amount of booze will do that to you. I once watched a Three Stooges short after consuming eight beers and started slurring about the sophistication of their humoUr.
Hmmmm...ya know Tom, I MIGHT have to concede this point to ya.
Uh huh, come to think of it, I just MIGHT have imbibed more than just my usual two fingers of that golden elixir((Balvenie 12 y/o Single Malt to be exact) which coincidentally comes from the northern part of that "little island situated off the coast of Europe" that I mentioned earlier here and while yet again enjoying the exploits of Rick and Ilsa...and of course Victor...and of course Frenchy...and of course that Nazi jerk Strasser.
(...and so, yeah, maybe you're right here.......maybe)

-
HEY now, Tom! I've never said you Canucks were "boring", either because of your inability to totally cut your apron-strings from those folks over there on that little island situated off the coast of Europe or NOT!!!
Nope, ALL I said earlier was that YOU guys IN GENERAL haven't been able to perfect being big loud-mouths like some of us good ol' AMERICANS can be...THAT'S all!
So PLEASE don't place any more words(containing that needless letter 'u' or NOT) into MY(big loud) mouth here! OKAY, dude?!

LOL
-
Well, I'll tell ya what, Tom. I TOO used to somewhat think that about the Lazslo character myself, however I noticed during the last two times I watched this film, I was starting to notice how more, say, colourfully Paul played him. Yep, in fact I now think he might be one of my new favourite characters in this baby!
(...btw, you may have noticed I added a few of those "superfluous letter 'u's" in my above response in hopes you might be better able to comprehend what I was attempting to say here!)

-
>Dargo, I have far more upper case words in my last post to you than you did in yours, so I win. Canada 1, U.S. 0.
LOL
Well THAT of course is because YOU have an "unfair advantage" in YOUR favor up there!
(...uh huh, 'cause YOU can ALSO uppercase those "superfluous letter 'u's in words LIKE "favor" that WE down here CAN'T!!!)
-
Well to be honest with ya here Tom, you HAVE to know that BOTH Paul Henreid(AND Glenn Ford for THAT matter) were usally pretty "boring" in almost ANYTHING they were ever in. RIGHT?!
(...you know, especially in Paul's case, what with all that "oh so European" subtle little manner and manners of his, RIGHT?!)
LOL
-
Eeh! You Canucks will NEVER be able to get the hang of it!
Nope! Ya BETTER just leave all this big loud-mouthed kinda talk to us YANKS!!!
(...we're MUCH better at it, ya know!!!)

LOL
-
Now c'mon, dark. I'm sure Sepia meant that metafor...ummm...metophor...ummmm....he really didn't meant it literally.
-
Oh, and Tom, as you might have ALSO guessed, I also can project a rather BOOMING VOICE when I feel I need to...such as say when possibly attempting to speak OVER some morons bangin' their little gavels on their desks.
(...I mean, why the heck you ya think I use all these freakin' uppercase letters around here so often...uh huh, it's 'cause I TALK just like I TYPE!!!)
LOL
-
YEAH, thanks Tom! I DO in fact feel much better now!
LOL
(...though I STILL say a good little "lecture" to those morons would at least made ME feel better about myself given the same circumstances...and as I'm SURE you've come to know, my "edit button" isn't used very often, and so of course there IS always the possibly that I WOULD have done that, ya know!)

-
Yep, once again, EXACTLY MissW!
And sooooo, as I've previously stated, here I sit waitin' to see at least ONE reason why I should consider the MOVIE "Casablanca" as "boring" by ANYBODY...

LOL
-
And btw Tom, seeing as how the conversation about Eddie has once again been turned to his unfortunate "crucifixion" during the HUAC years, I will say the following yet again here...
While it IS probably "easy for me to say now" the following, I will ONCE AGAIN say that the ONE thing Eddie did which I find somewhat objectionable is that during his testimony to those morons sittin' on that HUAC committee, not ONCE while he was denying his involvement in any "Communist conspiracy" did he EVER tell those morons that they had NO freakin' idea what "TRUE AMERICANISM" is! And that what THEY were doing there was about as UN-American as what that OTHER freakin' moron sittin' on his fat butt in Moscow, one Uncle Joe Stalin, was doin' during the same time TOO!
(...'cause THAT'S what I WOULD have told those freakin' morons...yep, supply 'em with a little "lecture" while testifyin'!!!!)
-
Thank you, finance. I had forgotten to reply to that "bit of luck" about Bogie's career.
(...yep, as I've stated MANY times around here, the old "Stone Face" Raft could NOT act worth a damn...as ANYONE not taken with his "tough guy" act, his sharp angled facial features and his ability to dance the "Bolero" HAS to recognize UNLESS they're BLIND!!!!)
-
And then finished up with some of her MMMMMmmmmm DEE-lish-us possum pie, RIGHT?!

-
>So, I am genuinely interested to hear why you "hate" Casablanca. I'm all ears -uh, "eyes". (for reading what you have to say.)
Yep, and I'll be sittin' behind this here keyboard o' mine sportin' big ol' Eddie Cantor "Banjo Eyes" myself, 'cause I'm ALSO interested in knowin' our friend cb7's reasons for her "hate" of this film.
(...so Blondie, what's the score here, huh?)

OH! And one MORE thing here, folks!
WHAT?! NObody found my "Eddie G. playin' for the Montreal Royals" thing funny at ALL???!!!
(...man, I gotta say YOU folks suuuuure are a tough freakin' "audience" sometimes!!!!)
LOL
