  1. >That said, I'm tired of seeing it too, but it costs money to create new shorts. I'm sure that's why....... Saaay, ya wanna know what might not cost TCM all that much for some new Shorts/Fillers? Well, how about if they purchase or rent all those old "What's My Line" shows from GCN and maybe show the "mystery guest" segments of that show featurin' all those old movie stars? Now wouldn't that be kinda fun to see? (...though come to think of it, maybe this has already all been brought up before around here, huh!) LOL
  2. Yep Dothery, you(and Milburn) are of course not the only folks who over the years have reports of what a mean ol' SOB Ford could sometimes be, BUT I'll always give the guy somewhat of a pass on his behavior after what I heard years ago that was ALSO reported he once told C.B. DeMille in that room full of Hollywood honchos during a certain period of this country's history. (...and I think you know what I'm talkin' about here, don't ya)
  3. What you say is true of course, however first, I'll never understand the logic of people putting Bob on mute or purposely missing what he's about to say about the films shown. I think his welcoming intros are one of the things which makes TCM so enjoyable to watch. I can't begin to tell you how many times when I'm already very familiar with a film, I'll just pop into TCM at the beginning of the scheduled starting times and just for those 4-5 minutes when Bob is introducing it, and then change the channel to something else. And secondly, with you being one who apparently lives and breathes classic films, it's almost a given that you would regard TCM as being just ONE of those "references" you mentioned in order to attain the vast amount of knowledge of the history of the Cinema you possess.. However, to the more casual fan of classic films such as myself, I believe these special segments, such as the SOTM programming among others, can contribute to the enjoyment and understanding for these "casual fans", and who wouldn't normally be inclined to invest their time in the pursuit of other avenues to their "enlightenment" of this subject.
  4. Well, yes and no, TB. You see, I think the added emphasis in content which Bob Osborne places upon the SOTM selection during his intros helps a bit in defining to the viewer what made the SOTM "unique" and worth our time to possibly appreciate a little more. Also, because the SOTM's films are run consecutively, I think it can help a viewer appreciate how much or how little a star could "stretch".
  5. Okay folks, gettin' back to Mr. Henreid here.... I was never that big a fan, BUT after watching him last night in "In Our Time" and "Song Of Love", I'm beginning to more appreciate his talent. (...I suppose that's always one of the nice things about these SOTM showcases...it gives one a chance to re-evaluate how one might feel about a performer if they're only or primarily familiar with a portion their filmography and with their more well known performances)
  6. Yeah, well, I just wanna know why our new friend here is all upset about TCM not showin' "1776" tomorrow night INSTEAD of doin' what ALL "good patriotic 'Mericans" SHOULD be doin' tomorrow! (...firin' their guns into the air!)
  7. WAIT! Did you just say "Vera Vasilyevna Kholodnaya" here, Sans? Didn't she just make it to the Quarterfinals at Wimbledon??? (...YEAH...isn't she the one who upset Serena just the other day???)
  8. Hmmmmmm...interesting, Sans...though lemme guess here.... In the U.K.and Canada, people THERE wanna spell this dude's name with a extra "U" in it TOO, right?!
  9. Hmmm...is it only me, or does anyone else around here think Guy here looks like a cross between Rex Reed and Ross Martin???
  10. Yeah, well trust me here, MissW. I know EXACTLY what ya mean here! Yep, for YEARS now I've been thinkin' of legally changin' the spellin' of MY first name to "D-W-I-T-E" instead of how it's actually spelled, "D-W-I-G-H-T". (...I just figure it would save me a whole lot o' my time from havin' to spell it correctly for the Starbucks baristas who keep wantin' to spell it that first way whenever they write it on that cup I'm gonna get my order in!)
  11. I'm with ya here, MissW. I always thought it was pronounced as you did it, also. And so I suppose NOW the question might be: When Paul lived out there in La La Land all those years, did HE pronounce the city "Los Angle-Less", "Loss Angle-LEES", or just plain ol' "Los Angeles" like Jack Webb did??? LOL (...sorry, couldn't resist) Btw, during the filler/promotion for Paul which TCM is presently running, you might have noticed that his daughter pronounces their last name with the "H" sound, and so I suppose we have our answer to this.
  12. Well Sepia, whenever this sort of discussion about "blaming parents" comes about now days, I'm reminded of the two clueless ones in Tucson, who's 20 y/o "boy" that still lived with them was the culprit in the mass shootings at the Safeway Supermarket down there a few years ago now. You know, the one where he killed 6 people including that little girl who was born on 9-11, and Rep. Gabby Gilffords who will never live a normal life since that horrific day. It seems a few weeks before that dark day, the local LEOs delivered IN THE PRESENCE of the "boy"'s FATHER(I might emphasize here), the Restraining Order, which stated due to his ongoing aberrant behavior at the college he was attending, he was no longer to go within 100 yards of said college. Now, wouldn't ya think a RESPONSIBLE father would have thought at that very moment somethin' like, "Ya know, I think my son might need to see a shrink right away. I think I'll go see who I can find to help him right now. And MAYBE in the meantime, I should relieve him of those guns he has stashed in his room, too!" Uh huh. Now wouldn't ya think a RESPONSIBLE parent would have have said somethn' just like that to himself??? Aah, but no. Evidently his father didn't have brains enough to think of somethin' like that, and most likely just thought it was just a "passing phase". (...and now we know how that whole thing turned out, don't we?!)
  13. Btw Ray...I LOVE the Stan and Ollie animated post there! AND, so perfectly apropros to this discussion TO BOOT! (...no pun intended there with the "to boot" thing, btw...well, okay, maybe a little anyway!)
  14. >So, yeah, Dargo. "Personal responsibility" is correct. If the kid holds up a liquor store, DON'T arrest his PARENTS, unless THEY drove the "getaway car". Yeah, I suppose ya have a point there, alright. Uh huh...'cause if the parents are thrown in jail TOO, then the Media can't go the homes of the clueless parents where Mommy(and SOMETIMES Daddy, but more seldom now it seems) can stand before the news cameras and tearfully state the typical, "I don't know what happened! He was always such a good boy!" Yep, 'cause I always get a good laugh wherever I see Mommy(and as I said, Daddy occasionally but seldom now) standing there sayin' stuff like that on my TV! (...and I think you probably know by now how much I enjoy a good laugh, RIGHT?!...and I sure wouldn't want THAT taken away from me!) LOL
  15. Good catch there, finance. Last night I watched both that film and the following film, "Devotion", about the Bronte sisters in which Nancy Coleman played Anne Bronte. Here's Nancy... And here's Jane...along with some sleepy-eyed guy... And yep, I also think there's more than a little resemblance between these two ladies.
  16. LOL Yep, just doesn't seem quite fair, does it John!
  17. LOL Nah, no prob'em at all! (...know what'm talkin' 'bout heah?!)
  18. The old cabin I mentioned is located right along the trail about 1/4 of a mile or so from the trailhead parking lot, James. Btw, if you'll send me a PM before ya head over here, maybe we can get together for a bit, have a beer and talk old movies. (...and btw, if your trip is later in October, there's a good chance Oak Creek Canyon will be spectacular with Fall colors...though the last few years it seems this hasn't happened until well into November) Edited by: Dargo2 on Jul 2, 2013 8:17 PM
  19. Thanks for the link to the Tom Shales article, rewrite. An enjoyable read it was. Btw folks, earlier in this thread someone questioned the inclusion in this series of a few of the stars' that Johnny interviewed...Burt Reynolds being one of them. Well, I hope the Reynolds interview they show(among the many he was on during the '70s and the during the time he was perhaps the most popular movie star goin') is the one where he recounts how he and Clint Eastwood first broke into The Biz at the same time, or the one where he tells of being up for a part in one of Clark Gable's last films, "But Not For Me", but ends up blowing his chance for the part after he doesn't exactly impress Gable during the interview process. (...both are very funny stories that Burt tells very well)
  20. Yeah James, as a matter of fact my wife and I just last Thursday hiked the "West Fork" trail(I believe that's the trail you're referring to here) up about 12-15 miles on Oak Creek Canyon Road aka AZ Hwy 89A from our home here. It's absolutely gorgeous up there. If this is the trail you mean, then you may know that there's a "Hollywood connection" along there. It's the ruins of a mountain cottage that according to the sign marker next to it mentions that at separate times Clark Gable and Jimmy Stewart had stayed there a few times when they wanted to get away from it all.
  21. Uh huh! Ya SEE folks?! Didn't I tell ya EARLIER that he was gonna say somethin' just like THAT?!!! LOL
  22. Oh, I see, yancey. Kinda like how some folks who live in that OTHER metropolis located on the opposite side of the country and situated around the mouth of the Hudson River still to this very DAY call THAT city, "New Yalk"??? Okay, I think I have it down now! LOL (...and yes, I know many folks back in the day pronounced my old hometown of Los Angeles just as Mr. Fitzpatrick did...in fact, I would venture to say at least half of our relatives who visited my family from "back east" when I was kid, and who came expecting to see Betty Grable and John Wayne walkin' down Hollywood Blvd at any moment, would pronounce it that way also)
  23. I wish I could take credit for this James, but I was lucky enough to find it on Google Images after being reminded of this opening shot of an old WB cartoon after Turhan Bey's name was mentioned in this thread. (...I think it was a Bugs Bunny cartoon to be exact)
  24. Hmmmm...hey! Speakin' o' which...as we know, finance likes to put those ear-buds in his auditory canals and listen to Classic Rock while he's workin' out. And so, wouldn't it be quite the coincidence if he was listenin' to the songs "30 Days in The Hole" and "Stone Cold Fever"(my personal favorite of theirs) at this very moment??? (...well, I think it would be, anyway!)
  25. Eeh! He's just probably been at the sweaty Philly gym all day, THAT'S all! (...one MUST keep that "Body Mass Index" extremely low SOMEHOW, ya know!)
