Eeh! YOU should know by now I MUCH prefer to "jump the gun" around here, don't ya Lavender?! (...a trait which SO "endears" me to all the nice folks here at TCM.com!!!) LOL
-
>In Quebec I believe the term is hoseur. Yeah, well John, I suppose you DO know that all those "British/Canadian superfluous 'u's" DO all come via the FRENCH, don't YA?! LOL
-
Yeah, well personally I was thinkin' finance was AT LEAST gonna say somethin' like: "Yes, she WAS very entertaining for a 7 y/o on that Carson rerun, though what a shame it is that her "insights" she now delivers about the films shown on "The Essentials" for the most part haven't seemed to progress much past the "Gosh Golly, Gee Whiz" 7 y/o level EITHER!" (...yep finance, I would have AT LEAST expected you to say somethin' like THAT...and BESIDES what I said YOU should have said here was ONLY one sentence long TO BOOT...and so, what's your problem here, ol' buddy???) **** here

Well, sorry, but I was always of the mind that those two Menendez boys were probably just fulfilling the almost inevitable conclusion to a life where their parents MUST have screwed up big time THEMSELVES somewhere along the line! Their father during the trial was sure made out to be one clueless and remote parent, anyway. (...yep, ya see, call me "insensitive" here and "blaming the victim", BUT I'm thinkin' as the old sayin' goes: "Things DON'T happen for no reason!")

Masculine Role Models for Young Women

Yeah James, I agree with ya too! BUT, ain't it a shame that all those "prequels" to the initial "Star Wars Trilogy" didn't have the levity, lightheartedness and general "Joie de vivre"(sorry 'bout havin' to resort to the use of French there, dude ) that Lucas put into the first round of 'em??? (...yep, sorry George, but while I understood your need to "bring us up to date" about what happened to your characters BEFORE Luke shot that big ol' Death Star outta the sky, I gotta ask WHY you forgot to add a lot of what MADE the originals so entertaining in the FIRST place???) -
And thus, would it not follow that it, once again, IS the "personal responsibility" OF the Parents to HAVE their little brats "listen" to them AND be the most influential aspect during their formative years? (...sorry, Twink, but I'm SO freakin' tired of people "blaming Hollywood/The Media/ et all" for THEIR inability to raise their little brats in a manner which conforms to the standards of modicum civility)

Sorry Sepia ol' buddy, but just last night I dreamed a "prequel" to the dream I had just last WEEK! (...though I doubt The Rules around here would allow me go into THAT much detail about the dream AND its "prequel" I had about Ava Gardner and me, other than to say that she was a little younger in the "prequel", of course) -
Hmmmm...I dunno, but it suuuuure sounds to ME like you guys are fallin' into that frame of mind which many "Traditionalist", who LOVE to talk about "Personal Responsibility" at the drop of a hat, wanna "blame Hollywood" for all the "Juvenile Delinquency" in our country, when IN FACT all that "Personal Responsibility" SHOULD of course fall upon the shoulders of the PARENTS in these sorts of matters! (...i.e. being around to EXPLAIN to their little brats why all those lowlifes in the movies AREN'T to be "admired"!)
-
>...and Jimmy Stewart's NO HIGHWAY IN THE SKY (1951), which was the first one I saw in a theater. AAH! So Fred, THIS is why you once mentioned around here that to this very day every time you walk on board an airliner the very FIRST thing you do is walk back to the tail of the plane and inspect all the rivets around that area, EH?! (...sure must have made a lasting impression upon ya when you were but a small tyke, huh!)
-
> He said (one of his standard lines) that if he'd been six inches taller he could have been a leading man . Hmmmm...I dunno 'bout that, Dothery. Ya see, by MY calculations, Milburn(btw, never a great first name for a "leading man", ya know) stood all of 5'8", and whereas James Arness stood a whooping 6'7". And so IF Milburn wanted to play the Matt Dillon part in that long running TV Western instead of Doc, then wouldn't he have had to have been ELEVEN inches taller than he was??? (...sorry, but Mathematics was always my strong suit in school, ya see...well THAT and bein' the class clown, of course!)
-
Saaaay...isn't Veronica Lake in this movie TOO? And isn't THIS the opening scene???... (...sorry, couldn't resist)
-
Not a bad idea either, TB. However, remember, most of those kinds of newsreels would show the stars still "on show" and not really being themselves, You see, that's the beauty of those old "mystery guest" segments of "What's My Line". While yes, they were usually on that game show to "plug" some movie that was about to be released, it is always great fun to see them out of character and being more of themselves and less "guarded". (...yep, sorry, but I think you're still kinda "hung-up" on the idea that these Shorts should all have been filmed at the old movie studios and/or during that era)
-
Lavender, Kirk's story last night reminded me of another "sword and sandal" story another actor once told on Johnny's show(at least I think it was on Johnny's show, anyway) Jim Backus told the story of how he and Victor Mature who were once still in costume while filming "Androcles and the Lion" had decided to grab a quick drink at some bar outside the studio one afternoon. They both walked into the place and bellied-up to the bar. When the bartender walked up to them, Mature ordered his drink but the bartender just stood there for a second with an inquisitive look upon his face, and according to Backus, Mature immediately said to the bartender, "What's wrong? Don't you serve men in uniform at this establishment?" !

>Someone else suggested that TCM should start airing old game shows. No to that, thank you. Yep TB, that was finance, and to which I agreed with him about it being used JUST for "Filler Shorts" and as a "wrap around" between the movie shown on TCM and preferably presenting the STAR on the "Mystery Guest" segment ONLY of that great old TV Game Show. And soooo, I suppose when and what I said below in support of this idea... I mean, aren't we all pretty much tired of watching "Joe McDoakes gettin' caught behind that dumb ol' 8-Ball", or "Talking monkeys dressed up as cowboys and riding dogs", OR listening to "James A. Fitzpatrick mispronouncing the name of a certain large metropolitan city located in Southern California as "Los Angle-less", by now???!!! LOL ...that just because the shorts presently being used in this matter on TCM were filmed at or in the low-budget backrooms of the studios and not on some television stage, that this makes it "okay" to show them and ONLY them, eh?! (...btw...I think you can add those painfully unfunny Robert Benchley shorts to my "list" up there too,..yep sorry, but I'll never understand how THIS guy got invited to a seat at that there "Algonquin Round Table"?!!!)
-
Btw...I also gotta say how I really feel for Dana Andrews! I mean, not ONLY does the poor guy suffer from PTSD from the result of his being a bombardier of a B-17 during the war in ANOTHER flick, BUT evidently his time while at the flight-stick of Supermarine Spitfire didn't help matters EITHER! (...btw...was it only me or did anyone else think at the very beginning of this flick and when we heard William Conrad's voice-over, that Bill was gonna say somethin' like: "The Name: Flight Lieutenant Richard Kimble...falsely convicted for the fire bombings of Dresden!"?)
-
NOW I know why the Zucker Bros were SO hot to get Bob Stack to be in their spoof of this flick!!! It's 'cause IF you close your eyes and listen to Sterling Hayden with that monotone voice and flat delivery of his in THIS baby, you would SWEAR it was Bob Stack and HIS typical "monotone voice and flat delivery" that you were listenin' to!!! (...though the two sets on sunglasses that Bob sports in the spoof WAS a pretty nice touch, if I DO say so myself!)
-
Actually Twink, you're kinda sorta correct in your assumption there. 'Cause if it WEREN'T for my Canadian birth mother and father, I wouldn't be here( in Arizona)TODAY! (...and kiddin' all our Canadians friends about that "British superfluous letter "u" they still use to spell certain words that REALLY don't NEED 'em!!!) LOL
-
Okay, right now out here in Arizona., I'm watchin' the final installment of TCM's salute to our neighbo(u)rs to the north....and no, I'm NOT talkin' about the Mormons up there north of here in Utah. (TCM would of course be showin' Ford's "Wagon Master" or Hathaway's "Brigham Young", if THAT were the case!) Yep, I'm now watchin' "ZERO HOUR"...but I have a question about this flick: When does Leslie Nielsen(coincidentally, a good Canandian boy) appear in this baby and start sayin' the line, "And don't call me 'Shirley'!"??? ***edit to follow*** I now see Fred has started a thread about the whole "ZERO HOUR=AIRPLANE" thing...though I hope you folks STILL liked my little "neighbo(u)rs" and "Mormon" references up there!!! >Right. I've mentioned before that I think the "What's My LIne" shows from the '50s and '60s, with their movie star mystery guests, would have a place on TCM, especially since they are no longer being regularly shown on the Game Show Network. I like the general idea here, finance, because as you probably remember a while back I mentioned to you I too was hooked on "What 's My Line" a few years go when GSN was showing it. However, I would have just one addition suggestion about that here.... As with these showings of Carson's interviews and with them edited to just present that part of his old programs, I would think it would be great to maybe just show the final portion of "WML" with the "Mystery Guests" as a replacement for some of the "filler shorts" between movies, and if possible showcasing the specific"Mystery Guest" between the movies said "Mystery Guest" would be starring in. (...I mean, aren't we all pretty much tired of watching "Joe McDoakes gettin' caught behind that dumb ol' 8-Ball", or "Talking monkeys dressed up as cowboys and riding dogs", OR listening to "James A. Fitzpatrick mispronouncing the name of a certain large metropolitan city located in Southern California as "Los Angle-less", by now???!!! LOL

>I am reminded of the feminist argument that male domination in all aspects of science is exemplified by the fact that if women had been in charge of the design aspects then rockets would not be shaped that way. Well, I suppose once it would escape Earth's atmosphere, a donut-shaped rocket WOULD BE as good as any other, RIGHT?! -

LOL Yep, that was pretty funny, Char! (...however, you DO realize that there is still a sizable number of, let us say "Traditionalists" in this country who would probably view this as a "REAL Documentary", don't ya?!) LOL -
Hmmmm...well then VX, how about a "vainspectacular" film, then? Any objections THERE??? LOL Look my friend, all wars and all battles within them are by definition "vainglorious", because they're started by men seeking either power or retribution in some manner, and both of which are very "vainglorious" notions. And, as I recall(because as I mentioned earlier, it's been many years since I've watched it) the idea of THIS film in particular "glorifying war" is something I do not recall it making. Nope, as I recall, it presents the waste of war in stark terms.

Further proof that it was never a good idea to make fun of Basil Rathbone.
-
Hey Slayton! How about..."The McGuffin That Knew Too Much"??? (...and of course, if ya wanna make him Scottish instead of Irish, just spell it "MacGuffin"...though I don't think the public would really care one way OR the other if ya ask me!)
-
Hmmmm....interesting. (...btw Sans, gotta say ya MIGHT wanna consider keepin' this bit of info under your hat if ya ever find yourself applyin' for a position at the one of those 'Quit Smokin' Clinics"...yep, might not be conducive to gettin' a job THERE, ya know)
