WOW John! I gotta say that THAT was probably the GREATEST "backhanded compliment" about an actor that I've EVER read!!!
LOL

>Making and marketing a prequel to the Wizard of Oz is a great idea. Oz is iconic. The vast majority of people in America have seen the movie. My guess is that this is the most seen movie of all time by all generations. The above is one of the reasons WHY the producers are making a prequel. Since that is a wise thing to do I fail to see why anyone would say that was dumb.
Well, you'll have to forgive Sepia, James. Ya see I'LL BET when Sepia first wrote what he wrote in this baby, he was probably just thinkin' about that movie in which Sean Connery runs around in it lookin' like THIS...

...YEAH, Zardoz....which of course the viewer eventually learns IF they have the fortitude to stay to the end of this turkey that in some future dystopian society all the rules of conduct are based upon a misunderstanding of an old edition"The Wizard or Oz that's still around in that future.
(...yeah, it's one of those "Soylent Green is people" moments!)
Uh huh...now THAT was a "dumb" idea for a movie, wouldn't ya agree?!!!
And soooo, I'll betcha ANYTHING that THIS was what was on Sepia's mind when he said what he said, THAT'S all. And wouldn't you admit that this would have been MOST understandable on his part????
(...well, at least that's MY present "theory" here, anyway...though yours as always are welcomed TOO, ya know...oh, and btw, IF in YOUR future you ever find yourself watching Zardoz and you've never watched it before, please accept not ONLY my condolences here BUT my apology for my lack of a "Spoiler Alert" during the presentation of my little "theory" here)

LOL

Ah shucks. Yeah, I suppose I can't deny I have a "pretty face" too, huh! LOL

(...though it wasn't that I needed to "feel better" about heuriger's picks, it was more that I was kiddingly pointing out that men usually ARE more "visually oriented" than women when it comes to ideas of "hotness" in the opposite sex..."shallow creatures" that we men are)
-
Ya know Twink, I'm startin' to think I should have NEVER shown ya that picture of me in my motorcycle riding gear!!! Ya see, I KNOW how that sorta thing turns you women on!!!

(...just remember, that riding jacket I was wearin' IS heavily padded just in case of a fall, and thus making me look MUCH more buff than what I really am!!!) LOL
-
btw fx, I just want to say here that I read that LOOOOONG "dissertation" of yours right down there and I think you NAILED it, brother. ESPECIALLY that part about "some folks" occasionally gettin' overly AND needlessly defensive when their contentions are challenged.
(...though of course all ya did was basically expand upon a lot of the stuff I've been sayin' throughout this thread, and so NATURALLY I would agree with ya there, huh!)

>I think they could show it now.
Why, I'm SHOCKED to hear such "sacrilege" coming from you, sir!!! LOL
(...you better watch talkin' like this around THESE here parts, boy!...ya KNOW, some folks DO keep tar and feathers in their basement, AND rails CAN still be easily purchased at ANY Home Depot to this very DAY!!!)

-
>As some will attest, this 2010 True Grit will be a classic one day, although I consider it a classic already.
So fx, in that case, what year do you think it will be "acceptable" for TCM to show it?
What, maybe around 2050 or so??? I mean I HOPE "you know" that ANY Classic "MUST BE" at least 40 years old to be even CONSIDERED for airing around here, and even THAT is probably pushin' it, 'cause as I'm sure you ALSO 'know", there haven't been any "classic movies" made since around 1970.
(...and so, I sure hope they at least show the COMPLETE Ann Sothern "Maisie" series BEFORE they ever show Jeff Bridges donning that eyepatch, OKAY?!)
****
-
My guesses as to why this seems to be are twofold here, Joe.
First, the screenwriters of old are no longer or at least seldom around anymore who knew how to give great little dialogue to even the most minor characters involved with the plot.
And secondly, the idea of watching "crusty old men" and "smart-mouthed old bitties" especially and who gave many of those old comedies those special little memorable moments has fallen out of favor in Hollywood's apparent attempt to cash in on the primary modern movie-going audience of today...the youth market.
Nope, I have a feelin' most of that youth market just doesn't enjoy watching "those old people" on screen anymore.
-
>Oh Dargo! I consider you a hot guy and a gentleman too! No favoritism here.
Oh, and btw, cb...PLEASE don't go spreadin' around that there "gentleman" thing you somehow think of me as, if ya would.
(...I DO have an image around here I'd prefer to protect, ya know!)

-
Well, ya KNOW you two, there IS such a thing known as "a happy medium" between two different styles!!! LOL
(...though don't get me wrong...I DO most often enjoy BOTH of your styles around here...though admittedly it IS much easier to play off of finance's than yours, fx!)

-
>That's so far outside the box, that I can't even see the box.
Hmmm...well, ya know finance, I hear that there newfangled "Lasik" procedure can do amazing things for poor eyesight!
(...though in my case, these cheap readers I get at Walgreens seem to be enough for me at this time)
-
>I understand that Karl Marx was very well-hung.
Ummmm....sorry finance, but I'm pretty sure they said that was the case with his friend Friedrich Engels, NOT Marx!
(...hmmmm....or was that what Shirley Jones always said about MARTY Ingels...yeah, maybe THAT was it...sorry...never mind)
-
Well heuriger, I suppose I can see the..ahem.."relativity" of these three gentlemen all being able to "think outside the box" as they say, but...REALLY?! "HOT"???!!!
I mean c'mon now, Marie Curie wasn't exactly a dim bulb EITHER ya know, but sorry I don't think I'm ever going to place HER on MY "3 Favorite Hot GALS" list along with either two of the following: Ava G, Hedy L and/or Natalie W!
(...ah, but then again, you know how "shallow" we men can be sometimes, doncha!) LOL

-
>Aside from anything else, this suggests to me that Joan and her daughter are not very close, do not know how to talk openly to each other. In fact the whole family seems a little cold and dysfunctional that way.
Well, maybe that's 'cause they might've lived apart for a few years, MissW. Uh huh, Joan in Balboa California with the rest of her family...and her daughter in NYC!
I mean what OTHER conclusion CAN you come to what with Geraldine Brooks' thick New York City accent in this movie, HUH?! LOL
Okay, all kidding aside, yeah, I suppose your point about the family being "dysfunctional" might hold a LITTLE water anyway, but I think the real cause of this feeling is the reasonably fast pace of this piece, and so maybe the decision was made to not slow it down by introducing a more complex relationship between the mother and the daughter after the death of the original antagonist.
AND, don't forget there was that short scene near the end of the movie where her Father-in-law seems to suspect somethin' and asks her if she wants to talk about what's on her mind.
-
Yep Sans. I suppose that's a "couple of good points" there, alright!
(...hey, don't blame ME here...I DIDN'T start this baby in this direction, REMEMBER?!)
-
>The true negotiated settlement: Everybody gets a little something of what they wanted, and no one is thoroughly happy about it.
Hmmm...better watch talkin' like this, Char.
(...I mean, ya never know...you MIGHT entice somebody around here now to start filibustering in this thread and so that this very reasoned thought goes nowhere!!!)

LOL
-
> I may be an archivist, but I'm not a masochist.
YEAH?! Well then Andy, PLEASE explain that picture of you sportin' that dog collar while on all fours that's been floatin' around the Internet if ya would?!!!
(...sorry...you know I can't resist these sorta set-ups around here, doncha?!)

-
Oh, okay, I think I see the reasons for your thought here now. However, I have to say that that whole "uncomfortable" feeling you get from him is pretty much the reason I personally always found his acting, let us say, "intriguing".
-
I'm glad you brought this up here, finance.
You see, I'm thinkin' here that the possible reason you made the comment that you did about Mason being miscast in The Reckless Moment (or at least words to that effect...or is that "affect"..but I digress) is that when his name is mentioned you MIGHT primarily think of him during his middle aged years such as during his turn as the lecherous Prof. Humbert, and maybe tend not to at first think of him or his work during his younger years and when he was a perfect fit for his role in this film.
(...just a theory here, you understand)
-
LOL
Well, just be ready for the amount of their "dues" over there, ol' buddy!
(...and word is their shop stewards aren't exactly the sharpest tools in the drawer EITHER, ya know!)
-
Well, that of course always depended upon one's seniority, and if they had enough to hold Saturdays and Sundays as their "weekend", OR even if they wanted to have those days as their "weekend" IF their seniority permitted it.
(...for instance in MY case, I used to prefer having Sunday and Monday off if I could get it with my seniority after my workforce would bid on their shifts every 6 months)
-
Yeah, I thought I'd start my weekend early!

(...though as I said earlier, because I'm now retired, I suppose it bein' a weekend or NOT really isn't that much of an issue, huh!) LOL
-
>Why not a list of Production Divorces ?
Very simple, my dear. Remember, these productions are most often filmed in Hollywood, and thus if they would do THAT, the credits would roll for ANOTHER 30 freakin' minutes!!!
-
>Now I can tell you with some authority that many of those people in the credits do not have union representation.
Sooooo. does this mean the poor saps can't occasionally tell their bosses how clueless they think they are and STILL keep their jobs, Char????
LOL
(...btw, and JUST for the record here...I ALSO have no problem sittin' through the credits, and really don't see a problem here...'cause I have the feelin' that the REAL reason the price of movie tickets keeps risin' is 'cause A-List actors today are askin' for AND receivin' salaries that are not commensurable with their talent...'cause if you ask ME, most of 'em SHOULD be makin' about 40 bucks an hour TOPS!!!)

WAIT! Wasn't the movie he hosted tonight "The Stratton Story"???
So, what's your beef here, dude???!!!
(...oh...wait...it was "The Magnificent Seven", ya say?!...sorry, never mind then...I don't think Brynner OR McQueen ever go to the mound as either a starter OR in relief in this one, huh!)
