  1. >They were in stitches laughing over the director's choices of close/medium/long shots, something I've never noticed since I was so mesmerized by the fantastic performances of the actors. Once the movie was over, they couldn't believe John Ford was such a beloved director, they thought he was the worst! Well then Tiki, those two Canucks must in fallin' off their chairs while they're watchin' a Sergio Leone Western then! (...ah-AH-ah-AH-ah..wah WAH wah!) LOL
  2. Yeah?! Well after last night, I'm sure sorry "the quiet Beatle" never did a cover version of THIS!!!... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7x3NhAttbg (...I think it just MIGHT be my new favorite song!!!)
  3. LOL Yeah, I saw she begged out of her "Today Show" appearance this morning. (...though I'll bet "y'all" out there noticed that too, didn't "y'all"!)
  4. >Unless it was Dan Duryea in drag that played the cabbie . . . Nah, forget it! I'm getting my posts on this thread confused now. LOL But I THOUGHT you were ONLY interested in gettin' Dan and Joe E. BROWN together, Tom???!!! (...my, you ARE a fickled one, AREN'T you!) LOL
  5. >It's interesting that when "To Kill A Mockingbird" was shown on "Essentials Jr." the other night, the "n" word was used several times by the small-town racists, and host Bill Hader did not give any advance warning of this. (I'm not necessarily saying he should have, just that hearing the word -- even when uttered by characters in 1932 for a film released in 1962 -- is probably jarring to many in 2013.) Whaddaya MEAN here, VP? Are you saying there hasn't been any Rap "songs" available for download recently??? (...well, this is news to ME, dude!) LOL
  6. Well Sapia, your "Foot in the Door" argument here is pretty much just another manner of expressing the "Slippery Slope" argument, ya know. And, to tell ya the truth(or at least my version of "the truth" anyway), I've found that that argument is always a "fall-back" tactic most often used by those who believe there are nothing but "absolute values" in the world at large, and not that there are or can be varying degrees of "right and wrong" or "correct and incorrect" values. It's just so simple to think in this manner and use this argument to press their point, INSTEAD of actually using "common sense"(for want of a better term) to see that all issues considered SHOULD be taken in a case-by-case basis and then using said "common sense" decide to what DEGREE(there's that word again, eh?! ) their response should entail. And, what I've always found rather interesting is that quite often the very people who bemoan that "People don't use common sense anymore" are the VERY people who think in these "absolute values". Ironic, ain't it. And so, I have a feeling that your argument here would be akin to positing that IF "they" are allowed to cut out Joan's utterance of the word "****" in the movie in question here, "they" are eventually going to cut out John Wayne saying the word while he's standing on the beaches of Iwo Jima, and THAT is something I'll BET YOU never happens...nor SHOULD happen!
  7. And, while I might have perhaps seemed to come across as "talking in general", I also meant to specifically apply those same thoughts to "The Big Sleep" here, too. (...maybe it was my inclusion of Hitch's name that might've thrown ya a bit here...sorry)
  8. Thanks. (...gotta say though I'm gettin' MIGHTY tired of havin' to pull these here compliments outta you people around here!) LOL
  9. Oh SURE, Mark! No mention of MY "exciting and fun-packed" "Play-by-Play Account" of Untamed Youth here, HUH?! (...man, see if I HELP keep you people around here "informed with the latest breaking news" ever again!!!) LOL
  10. So MissW, after reading this particular passage of your last posting... > I don't believe Hawks introduces the babes-throwing-themselves-at -Marlowe factor to "reduce the tension", as you suggest. ...while it appears you and I(and Tom) basically agree that the lighter moments in this film do NOT detract NOR distract from the overall feel of it, it DOES seem you and I DO disagree as to one of the reasons for our mutual feelings here, eh?! 'Cause like I kinda sorta inferred down there somewhere, the idea of story being more of a, say, "rollercoaster ride" with the "ups and downs of tension" being supplied within it(once again, think in terms of "Hitchcockian"), can and very often does bring about a more enjoyable cimematic experience. But hey, at least you and I (and Tom, once again) agree in "General Principle" here anyway, RIGHT?!)
  11. >You must be a fortune teller Mongo! Jane Russell you are predicting will live until 2911, but I thought she had already pased on???!! Hey JH! I guess you haven't heard, but the "Rule-of-Thumb" has always pretty much been that IF your..err..you're going to kid someone about their typo, you better make darn sure you haven't done the same thing YOURSELF! LOL (...in other words, check out how you spelled "passed" up their..err..I mean up THERE!!!)
  12. Nope, sorry Twink, I don't know what ya meant there. Unless ya might be inferrin' somethin' about all those "lonely night out on the range", and then havin' the cattle startin' to look mighty "enticin'" to ya! (....hey, don't blame ME here folks...TWINKEEE started down THIS Chisholm Trail !!!)
  13. So Iz, in essence you're sayin' that being a "Metrosexual" back in the day didn't mean you were any less of man, right?! AND, before the idea caught on that for a guy to take pride in his appearance didn't necessarily infer her was veering toward being "light in the loafers", RIGHT?! (...boy I sure wish all these fat beer-bellied freakin' Yahoos out there in America today knew this!!!!) LOL
  14. > As I posted before, the Great Movie Buddha says: Don't get your history from movies. Slayton, oh mighty Buddha , I believe this very statement of yours has been one the most important and pertinent things said by anyone in this thread, and one which seems often forgotten by many. Would I be wrong to place it in perhaps more of a simplified context here?: Watching "What's Opera, Doc?" and then thinking afterward you understand Wagner! (yeah, I know at first blush that sounds rather strange, but I think it might be a good analogy) And so, returning to my initial and on-going point in this thread...the idea that Joan's offhanded "****" remark, a remark that really doesn't shed any light upon her character other than to infer that her character existed as an American citizen during the Second World War, BUT which in essence really doesn't give a viewer of this film any overall, encompassing or clear picture of American life at the time(as I'm SURE few if any American women during that time LITERALLY ever went "weak in the knees" over Melvin Douglas EITHER...sorry, couldn't resist saying THAT again!!! LOL), and thus to "worry about" the excising of THIS PARTICULAR feet of film and in THIS particular movie is a moot point in the grand scheme of things. Edited by: Dargo2 on Jun 20, 2013 8:57 PM
  15. Sorry, but I AM gonna sidetrack this thread for just a minute here to just say that while I givin' this play-by-play account of "Untamed Youth", I totally forgot Game-7 of the NBA Finals was on tonight and TOTALLY MISSED THE FIRST HALF!!!!! WAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!! And now back to YOUR regularly scheduled (Mamie) programming this evening. (...I'm watchin the rest of the game) Edited by: Dargo2 on Jun 20, 2013 7:31 PM
  16. Btw, I surely hope I didn't "sidetrack" this thread too awfully much this evening. 'Cause I'M thinking I COULDN'T have been MORE "on-topic"! (...well, that is if you kinda look past all that stuff about cars and motorcycles and cheekbones and handcuffs and all that other kinda stuff...but hey, THAT stuff WAS in this here movie TOO, ya know!) LOL
  17. Next and FINAL "Untamed Youth" update to follow... (bet you're glad about THAT, aren't ya) So ,fade out as the one sister gives up her dreams of stardom to settle down with Mr. "Do-Gooder". (...I sure hope Molly Haskell knows about THIS movie!!!)
  18. Next "Untamed Youth" update to follow... Okay, I'm not so envious of John Russell anymore. I've been in a set handcuffs before and ooh-WEE those suckers can SURE pinch a guy's wrist! (...and no, NOT durin' any kinda kinky stuff...get your minds outta the gutter again here people, WILL YA?!!!)
  19. Next "Untamed Youth" update to follow... "****"?!!! Did that "Do-Gooder" Bob say "****"?!!! (...look for this movie to soon be mentioned in that OTHER thread currently going on around here about Joan Crawford sayin' "Japs" in a ROMANTIC COMEDY!)
  20. Next "Untamed Youth" update to follow... Yep, those '56 Ford Fairlanes WERE known to have pretty shoddy rear suspensions, alright! (...that's why I'm a G.M.Man...though don't get me wrong here, I STILL would sure like to have that '57 Chrysler of Russell's there!)
  21. Next "Untamed Youth" update to follow... Man, never knew a thrown sponge could hurt a guy so badly! (...probably one of those synthetic kind and not the real ocean-goin' variety, huh)
  22. Next "Untamed Youth" update to follow... And yet ANOTHER reason for me to be envious of John Russell!!! The Mexican dude asks him, "Habla Espanol?" and Russell replies, "Si, un poquito", and then the Mexican dude starts rattlin' off a whole bunch of Spanish real quick and all, Russell actually understood what the guy was sayin'!!! (...'cause every time I REPLY that same way and when the Spanish-speakin' person starts doin that, I have NO freakin' idea what they're talkin' about from then on out!!!)
  23. Next "Untamed Youth" update to follow... Wonder what kept "The Salamander Rock" from climbin' to Number One??? (...you'd think somethin' like THAT could'a knocked Elvis right off The Charts, wouldn't YA?!!)
  24. Next "Untamed Youth" update to follow... MAN, would I kill for John Russell's '57 Chrysler there, especially if it has a HEMI in it! (...ya know, I'm startin' to sound pretty darn envious of the dude, aren't I?!!!)
  25. Next "Untamed Youth" update to follow... Yeah, young "Do-Gooder" Bob is gonna be REAL "Gone" if John Russell has HIS way! (...those darn Do-Gooders always ruin EVERYTHING, don't they?!)
