  2. > {quote:title=finance wrote:}{quote}Not necessarily for the audience. In TWENTIETH CENTURY, they were both so over-the-top that it ruined the film for me. I'm pretty sure this has come up before but we are simpatico on 20th Century. It's the only performance of Lombard's *that I completely do not care for* (she wears a bit thin in Nothing Sacred too+,+ but still pulls it off in the end.) However, I do think John Barrymore's performance is a magnificent success, he is about the only thing I like about the film. The only performance of JB's that I think is *not* successful (that I've seen) is Romeo and Juliet. He hurts in that movie. Other than that, it's all aces. I think he's terrific in Svengali, Arsine Lupin, Rasputin and the Empress (the only one of the three siblings whom I thought was solid- although I need to see it again), Grand Hotel (he *anchors* those scenes where Garbo is off swooning dizzily in the rafters and works off Crawford *so well* ), Night Flight (which is terrible, but he is good) Midnight ("hello Dada!"- best damn line in the film), his work in Dinner at Eight is *damn brave,* and I even like him in his last film with Kay Kayser (am I right on that?)( I think he's a GD hoot in it.) And I know I'm forgetting some stuff too.... Edited by: AddisonDeWitless on Jun 2, 2013 5:39 PM
  3. Another very good example of Vincent Price working with the ham reputation to solid effect is Theatre of Blood from some time in the early 70's. He costars with Diana Rigg as a deranged (and verrry bad) Shakespearean actor who does away with critics and costars one by one. . It's too derivative of The Abominable Dr. Phibes in its structure, but Price is wonderful(ly bad) and Rigg is quite good too and I think it's got an inn-teresting cast. While I bring it up, The Abominable Dr. Phibes is great too- although Price has an almost supporting role if I remember right and a lot (almost all?) of his performance is silent and the story itself is so wildly audacious even he can't top it with anything outlandish. Both were for a time available in full on youtube and both may still be. ps- there's also The Masque of Red Death- which is the only decent film Roger Corman has ever done. He's not necessaily hammy as I can recall, but he works eeeeee-ville to the hilt.) pss- which, I guess, is devilled ham. Edited by: AddisonDeWitless on Jun 2, 2013 5:44 PM
  4. > {quote:title=misswonderly wrote:}{quote} > Still, I know very little about Clint Eastwood's personal life. If you are such a non-fan of his work, I'm surprised you've apparently taken the time to explore the things he's done in his non-professional time. It's come up a lot. I remember quite distinctly that Steve Croft brought (the womanizing issue) up in an interview on 60 Minutes waaaaaay back (like, the early nineties) and I remember that Clint just glared at him like a hyena for minutes of silence. Very uncomfortable. Edited by: AddisonDeWitless on May 31, 2013 12:11 PM
  5. well, I feel kinda tacky bringing it up now (esp. since both you and I agree that someone's personal life *shouldn't* influence how you feel about their work* ) but if you want a primer, go to wikipedia and look to the "PERSONAL LIFE" section for Clint Eastwood (tried to post the link, didn't work) *- shouldn't doesn't mean doesn't. ps- I think I should probably drop this particular issue since, again, it was kinda sorta tacky to bring it up and I feel a trifle like Spring Byington or Edna Mae Oliver rolling my eyes behind the pince-nez at someone when- Lord Knows- I'm no angel. I recommend the Breakdowns of 1939 one especially, it has a really funny blooper where Bette Davis' wig gets caught on some part of Brian Aherne's costume while filming Juarez and she (I think?) ad-libs at the end of the line "I can't go with you..." to include "because if I do, my **** wig is going to come right off."

  8. Yeah, I definitely wished they'd've flipped it with Titanic (which has been shown before) and shown In Old Chicago at 8:00 pm- but I have the feeling we'll see it again.
  9. > {quote:title=Hibi wrote:}{quote}Missed In Old Chicago. The thread grew a lot since I commented (LOL). Hopefully it'll be on again. I also missed The Iron Petticoat the same day, so there are pluses!! Sadly, I caught some of The Iron Petticoat that day (bruh-huhhuh). In Old Chicago was all right, it was *a lot* like San Francisco, namely in that it spent a lot of time on boring stuff before they got to the damn disaster. But (as aforementioned) Alice Brady was fantastique. A whole night of Alice Brady films would be wonderful- Chicago, My Man Godfrey and Young Mr. Lincoln (in which she is *excellent* )
  10. > {quote:title=MaxvonMayerling wrote:}{quote} > My girlfriend loves showing off her hams in skimpy shorts during the summer. The men love staring at her hams! " *GIRLFRIEND?!?! MAX, MAX HOW COULD YOU???!!! WHO IS SHE???! SOME CAR-HOP OR DRRRRESS EXXXTRA!!!!!!!"*
  11. > {quote:title=Geminigirl wrote:}{quote} Like helen said, it *weeds* out a lot of people. Heh-heh: weed.
  12. The only thing I can offer is that Warner Bros. used to have year-end "blooper" reels done of all the films they'd done that year and (I think?) screened them privately at studio affairs (as they are *filled* with cuss words, and from some of your favorite stars.) However, *they are all now on youtube in full and they are HIGHLY entertaining.* Just type in "Breakdowns of 1935-48" into the search engine, and you'll find years worth of blooper reels featuring Bette Davis, Cagney, Bogart, etc. Pat O'Brien is featured *prominently* in all of them- usually for messing up or forgetting a line *multiple times*, although occasionally it's because his toupee comes loose. He has a really good sense of humor about it, but I think it probably led to the a general impression by the studio folk that he wasn't natural, didn't take the job seriously, or a film with him as a lead would be an uphill, re-take laden battle.
  13. > {quote:title=Geminigirl wrote:}{quote}Cool.......I love Jeopardy, but I am way too shy to even attempt to take the *online test* to appear on the show! Online? I thought they came around to towns as part of recruitment drives and you took the test there... ps- if you live in LA or the LA-area it's *really easy* to get on.
  14. That was a very good post all-around. Two things I'd "counter" with: Just my opinion (well, I'm sure there's one or two others out there who'd agree with me) but, Mystic River was a slightly better-than average episode of Law and Order with a *terrible ending.* I don't know about his being in touch with his "Feminine Side", but the way Clint treats women in his personal life is awful. I know it's kind of awful for me to judge him on this and incorporate it into how I feel about his work, especially since there are other performers whom I admire or respect who are in all likelihood awful people in their personal lives- but boom- there it is. But I get you, and like I said- it was just one night.
  15. > {quote:title=AnnF wrote:}{quote}Hehe, I better hope they're not monitering this thread, right? I can't say as I'd be terribly surprised. (It's not like they have better things to do.)
  16. > {quote:title=joefilmone wrote:}{quote} The documentary was a Eastwood love a thon- I wish it had been a bit more critical. I didn't watch it, so I'll (mostly) keep me yap shut, but I can't say as I'm surprised. Most of these documentaries done by HOLLYWOOD on HOLLYWOOD tend to take that turn down **** Lane at some point- I know I've only now (barely) recovered from the reeeeeeeeeeally pretentious Brando doc that TCM aired a coupla' years ago.
  17. > {quote:title=AnnF wrote:}{quote}Aw you had to go there and I know you could tell that I'm a flamin' righty, but I don't care, I'm live-and-let-live about those matters ] And you're perfectly welcome to be (just don't tell the IRS!)
  18. I don't think it was very smart to let that dog drive the boat, but I'm not going to tell Gloria Swanson how to live her life... (especially since she's been dead for, what?- forty years.) ps- bonus points for accessorizing the bathing suit with a white fur stole and ballet slippers- that's fashion forward if ever I saw it. 19. I know it's kind of trite to say this, but (to me) *the best acting seems effortless.* Bogart, Cary Grant, John Wayne, Mitchum, WC Fields, Charles Boyer, Joel McCrea (The King of Effortlessness, in the best sense)- heck- even (I'd say) Cagney, Edward G. Robinson and Paul Newman were effortless actors- *or at least it seemed that way.* (of course effortless acting doesn't get you Oscars, as all of those guys (even the eventual winners) would tell you.) But with Steiger it's *effort, effort, effort all the time.* He's *always* trying; always "on"- even in scenes where he just has to stand there and say nothing. It's a constant, compulsive need to always take it to an eleven. As Katharine Hepburn (allegedly) used to say of Meryl Streep, every time you watch Steiger, all you can hear is "click, click, click." 20. THANK YOU for the FYI !!!! Tres interesante!
  21. Well, thanks to everyone thus far; I must say I'm relieved the feedback has been such as it has. *Believe it or not,* I really was (somewhat) reluctant to post something negative about the programming on TCM because *it has been on a marvelous up-tick for some time now,* and heck- it is just one night. PS- King, In Old Chicago is all right, it's a lot like San Francisco in that it takes forever to get to the damn disaster (and is kind of boring in getting to it), but Alice Brady is sensational (as I knew she would be)- miles away from her other Oscar-nominated work as the dithery socialite in My Man Godfrey. Such a shame she died within a year or two after winning Supporting Actress for this. PSS- Finance, I love me some Johnny Mercer, but it really seemed to me that his "documentary" had, well, very little of Mercer himself and waaaay too much of Clint talking about his impressions of Mercer's music, and of course, that daughter of his murdering Skylark. PSSS- Clint's Daugher, if you're reading this: if one is limited vocally, p'raps one should not tackle so ambitious and melodious a song as Skylark. I think Frere Jacques played on the recorder might've been a better number to show off your rare talent. PSSSS- Yeah, I know I'm an awful person. What about it? Edited by: AddisonDeWitless on May 30, 2013 7:58 PM
  22. Maybe I'm just still bitter about the "Johnny Mercer" doc he directed for TCM (?): Clint Eastwood Presents- Clint Eastwood's Impressions of Johnny Mercer and their Effect on the Life of Clint Eastwood; a Clint Eastwood Film, Featuring his daughter Francesca "The Helen Keller of Jazz" Eastwood and her renditions of Clint Eastwood's Favorite Mercer Songs Maybe I was underwhelmed by the Thelonious Monk doc he did for the network- Clint Eastwood Presents: A Clint Eastwood Film: Thelonious Monk, what he means to Clint Eastwood- directed by Clint Eastwood, Featuring Clint Eastwood (fyi- I was a little unimpressed by Monk's work itself, sounded too much like a cat on a piano to me.) But *why another night dedicated to the Clintster?* (at least this time he's supposed to be the subject of the doc as opposed to co-opting every moment for himself.) Maybe I'm just a hater, and if everyone replied with "shut up Addison, you're just bitter. We LOVE us some Clint"- then I'll back off. Of course, if you wish to share in a cup of Hatorade, please feel free to pull up a chair. ps- you're right, I don't like him as a person and I don't like his films either. pss- TCM, *no hating on you.* You've been *really good lately.* I enjoyed In Old Chicago last night and am *really digging* on all the premieres and new blood you've pumped in, and of course, J'adore Illeana, so this is just a bitchy little quibble. It's just one night and all. But is anyone with me on this? Edited by: AddisonDeWitless on May 30, 2013 6:02 PM Edited by: AddisonDeWitless on May 30, 2013 6:05 PM
