  1. Well then, I (for one) will make it a point to tune in tonite. And I expect to be vacuuming sand out of me carpet if the restoration is indeed *all that.* (and I hope it is.)
  2. I personally prefer films of the 30's-50's and always will, I think...but, there was something about the seventies where I think everyone had had enough time and distance to evaluate the films of the thirties through the fifties and realize how important they were. So, my favorites of the seventies are the *period pieces/homages* to the first four decades of sound film: What's Up Doc? (1971) American Graffiti (1973) The Long Goodbye (1973) Chinatown (1974) The Day of the Locust (1975) Farewell, My Lovely (1975) Murder on the Orient Express (1975) Murder by Death (1976) and then besides that, there's: Scars of Dracula (1970) The Night Digger (1971) Harold and Maude (1971) Juggernaut (1974) Jaws (1975) Dog Day Afternoon (1975) Network (1976) American Raspberry (1977) Edited by: AddisonDeWitless on Apr 22, 2013 10:21 AM I think I messed up on some of these years. 3. > {quote:title=Geminigirl wrote:}{quote}Absolutely. ( *Douglas Fairbanks Jr.* was) much more handsome than his father, IMHO. He is in my top ten most gorgeous leading men. > If I were Joan Crawford, I would have thought twice about divorcing him...I would have tried to work it out! Agree, spead that on a damn cracker and snack all day. Interestingly, I went to google images to try and find some pics of Douglas F. Jr to post, but none of them really captured how handsome he is on screen. On the marriage:: I think he and Joan had some insurmountable issues- as well as the fact that it was a wide-open marriage wherein things got too complicated (as is so oft the case.) Oh Joan- to be torn between Fairbanks Jr. and Gable- these are the problems in life that people *want to have.* Edited by: AddisonDeWitless on Apr 22, 2013 9:30 AM
  4. Oh, okay, I thought about it...GWTW, got it. ps- GWTW has not aired *that* much *at all* in the last several years, as far as I can recall. pss- at least it's not in Lawrence/Zhivago/ Mr. Smith Goes to Washington/ Eternity/ Gigi/ Since You Went Away territory.
  5. Um, anyone want to essplain the Vivien Leigh/turnip thing to me? I'm lost. But yeah, I sprained my eyes rolling them when the trailer came on for *yet another* prime time showing of Laaaaaaaaaaawrence!- a film which I *love* and which *I personally* can watch each time it's on, but *yeah, I totally get it's getting leaned on too heavily, especially in PRIME TIME.* Part of the blame lays at the feet of the guest programmers- A LOT OF WHOM have picked it for airing, I know in a not-so-stunning dearth of imagination, La Barrymore is, like um, the fifth Essentials host in a row to pick Laaaaaaaaawrence! as one of their inclusions. The downside to these heavy airings of "standard classics" is that they can cause some of us to develop a *real enmity* for films that *don't deserve it.* I know I for one have come to a point where I *f-ing HATE* Gigi and From Here to Eternity, films that really deserve no more than a "meh" at worst- simply because they have aired 142 times in the last three years.
  6. It's worth noting that Mark of the Vampire was one of the last films Browning directed. After it, there was The Devil Doll (again with Lionel Barrymore) and something from 1939 whose title eludes me. And that was all.
  7. Mark of the Vampire (1935) Lovely to look at, rich in atmosphere, wonderful sets, committed (if off-beat) performances... ultimately senseless and ludicrous, but it at least it's too short to qualify as a bore and its M-G-M stamp makes it all the more of a curiosity. It's a favorite of sorts of mine- numerous faults and all. In the end: it's a gorgeous, highly-watchable let-down, which is exactly how I'd describe Dracula (1931) which is also directed by Browning- about whom I often wonder "did he just get lucky with Freaks ?" Because so many of his films are great on atmosphere and acting but iffy on the whole. edit: just went and checked Browning's filmogrpahy and realized I haven't seen enough of his stuff to make that last assertion. I will say it is true of Dracula and Mark of the Vampire, however The Devil Doll and The Thirteenth Chair are actually kind of fun, and of course, Freaks is a masterpiece. Goldwyn had been feuding with William Wyler; I suppose Goldwyn insisted she divorce. When she refused. he canceled her contract Her career was light after that. I think you mean *They LIVE By Night.* (I do the same thing; it's funny, for two films to be so different in tone, acting, story and quality, it is easy to say one when you mean the other.) ps- WHY didn't they just call it Thieves Like Us ??!!!

  11. That is true, and I have to say, I find Paulette Goddard *extremely attractive.* This is the standard Claudette 'do, later known as The "Jane Wyman" special: ...which yeah, is boring and not sexy and too matronly (esp. when combined with her husky voice.) One also gets the sense that after many years of heavy styling, it got to where it could morph back into shape like that liquid nitrogen guy in Terminator 2. 12. Maybe one reason why Loy's Best Years character is relegated to borderline supporting status was because Since You Went Away had been so big a year and a half (or so) before and they felt like the women-on-the-homefront issue had been done, or didn't want to seem like they were retreading familiar turf. I still reiterate it's a shame Loy didn't do the lead in SYWA, put her in the Colbert part, take out all the hokum, de-clunk the dialogue and let an hour of footage hit the floor and you'd (likely) get a decent picture. ps- lose the outro/intro music and entr'acte too. Not even in a background. Only Huston guests in this picture directed by His Son John. I thought it was In This Our Life where Walter Huston played the bartender. I've also read that it was Humphrey Bogart who dubbed the voice of the drunk who keeps harassing Judy Garland to "sing Melancholy Baby " throughout the Born in a Trunk sequence in the '54 A Star is Born. I've watched the number many times and it doesn't sound like Bogey one bit to me. Edited by: AddisonDeWitless on Apr 16, 2013 8:29 AM
  14. damn. i forgot about Stairway to Heaven/ A Matter of Life and Death. ps- I have the feeling Myrna Loy would've sooner died than won supporting actress (those days were so different) but I get where you're coming from. pss- was just thinking the other day how much better it would've been had Loy gotten the Claudette Colbert role in Since You Went Away. Would've made the story a lot more down to earth. Edited by: AddisonDeWitless on Apr 16, 2013 8:17 AM

I just learned the meaning of the word "captious"- so, you know, it hasn't been a total loss.

She always looked to me like someone's grandmother when she was young. agreed...although I note, you could say the same thing about Jane Wyman or June Allyson but there's something about Claudette, a warmth, a naturalness, an ease in her own skin that helps make her more memorable/convincing/endearing. And I think she played saucy in 1934's The Sign of the Cross, which is a pretty saucy affair all-round from what I hear (sadly I've not seen it.)

  18. careful, careful. always good show to disguise the hate a little.
  19. Anyone else notice how in the new Essentials promo, Drew refers to this gig repeatedly as a *"job"* with an intonation that would almost suggest she regards what she's doing as *a task* on a par with something where a person must wake up and go somewhere and maybe even get paid to do it. (edit- I guess she's right on two out of three.) BUT, sersely, I'm sure she takes scale as her fee for doing this, and she maybe found a way where she could wave getting paid, but I'm sure TCM's still got to shell out for- at the very least- a car and driver pick her up/ deli tray/ bowl of orchid water, scented candles and rider accoutremonts/ and booze/make-up and wardrobe budget. (All/most of which are done/provided by people with *jobs* in a less abstract sense of the term.) Edited by: AddisonDeWitless on Apr 14, 2013 9:25 AM

  21. Could've done without Since You Went Away - at least not as the follow-up to So Proudly! White Cliffs would've made a better follow-up.
  22. Os went out of his way to say several times that la Cher was *the decider* on the film titles, so. Props to her for picking So Proudly and White Cliffs and a few of the other titles that aren't Duck Soup or Wuthering Heights. *And props to TCM for dealing with Paramount in order to show So Proudly We Hail! .* *Thanks and feel free to show it again soon.* Edited by: AddisonDeWitless on Apr 13, 2013 12:26 PM
  23. Still take her over Drew in an instant. It was cool to see So Proudly We Hail ! for the first time in- gasp- 20 years? I distinctly recall seeing it on AMC, it's one of those films that one distinctly recalls- even years later. Good film- compelling as hell- a little eyebrow raisingly HOLLYWOOD at times (as are a lot of WWII pics.) Well-acted by all, with the exception of Sonny Tufts (Kansas) who was nonetheless likeable. The ending is particularly effective. I especially liked what Colbert did with her face at the end of the picture, as her husband's letter is read aloud. I think it might actually be her best performance(?) It's unusual that Paulette Goddard was nominated for supporting actress for this film as she was a big star, had been around some time, and is in one of those roles that bordered on being a lead (she is second-billed.) Nonetheless, she was excellent, and some kind of recognition was deserved for the (seeming) effortlessness, earthiness and likeabilty she projected onscreen in everything she ever did. Had she had some real BIG scene, she might've had more of a shot at the award than I think she did (Katina Paxinou won in 1943 for For Whom the Bell Tolls ). Veronica Lake is also solid in the most memorable moment of the film. I read on wikipedia there was a feeling she would be the one nominated for the Oscar, but no- Paulette was the sole acting nominee for the film. God, I over-Oscar everything, don't I? Nonetheless, good film, maybe a little manipulative, but not overtly so (for which it deserves some credit- as do all good WWII films) I give it three-and-half out of four.
