I haven't been able to search the entire board, so this may have already been discussed. Didn't Lena Horne lobby for the part of Julie in MGM's Showboat? Wasn't it deemed problematic to cast a real mixed-race singer/actress and have her play opposite a white man? I think Lena would have been tremendous as Julie.

Since this clip is from a historical film and it takes place in the late 1890s, perhaps it does portray a realistic outlook for that time. But it certainly gives 1934 audiences a dose of 'Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous'!

I cannot watch 'Singin' in the Rain' enough! It's so well written (thank Comden and Green) and the dances are wonderful! I constantly quote Lina Lamont, and she doesn't even sing in the film! And 'Moses Supposes' is the best tap number ever filmed, except for 'Begin the Beguine' in 'Broadway Melody of 1940'.
