I concur, Lonesome . . . THAT really is the more interesting question. I approach films like a consumer these days -- especially when plunking down $ to see one in a theater (something I rarely do anymore). When it comes to DVDs on Netflix, I find that the star system can be helpful and reviews, too -- although I try not to read too much so that I'm pleasantly surprised (it can backfire, though). Regarding TV, easy enough to switch the channel on the remote. Your point about over-hype and then delivery falling flat is a good one that I agree with. I'd say that "Prometheus" (2012) fits that bill for me. I was VERY enthusiastic about seeing it. The actual product failed miserably to deliver and I was highly disappointed.

I love "Rebecca" (and Joan Fontaine's performance) for all of those reasons and more. So, I couldn't agree more with you, dothery.

So many bad films, so little time . . . Besides, my "least favorite" is bound to be someone's "most favorite" . . . and you know how some folks interpret "critique" as "personal attack." Edited by: dpompper on Oct 24, 2012 8:29 AM

She just appeared in "Albert Nobbs" (2011). It was nice to see her again . . . I think the last film I saw her in was "My Left Foot."
-
Indeed, she does. That's why I own the DVD. I'm a big Ida Lupino fan.

Nice to see a thread about Vic Morrow / Jennifer Jason Leigh. I love them both! Vic Morrow was my first celebrity crush, watching "Combat" on TV at age 5 with my father. I cannot speak to the truth of the nudity/"Blue Lagoon" issue, but what I do know is that Jennifer Jason Leigh displayed quite a bit of herself in "Flesh + Blood" (1985). She's among my fave "contemporary" actresses. I like her a lot in "Last Exit to Brooklyn" (1989), "In the Cut" (2003), and "Mrs. Parker" (1994). I'm gonna go out on a limb here and hope that her best work is yet to come.

Thanks for the suggestion, Gemini. I just finished "Born to Be Bad." The storyline just reminded me so much of "All About Eve," so I didn't find it particularly interesting. (Except for watching Robert Ryan play some beefcake!) Interesting seeing Joan Fontaine as a bleached blonde. I have "The Bigamist" on DVD, so I've seen it several times. Will tune in later to see others I've not yet seen.

I watched "Suspicion" on DVD Saturday night. I think all of the Hitchcock chatter on here inspired me to pull it out. Joan Fontaine was very lovely and quite talented. I look forward to seeing more of her work beyond it and "The Women" (a film I love, but can't stand Fontaine's character). Wow, 95! Happy Birthday, Ms. Fontaine!

Great James Bond moments, lines, trivia, and such

When publicity focused on "who will be the next Bond" a few years' back, I was hoping that James Purefoy would have been selected. While Daniel Craig has appeal, he seems to lack that certain something. He's a bit less sophisticated and a bit too thug-like for my taste (but don't get me wrong, he's still nice to look at). James Purefoy is drop dead gorgeous, sophisticated, the action hero type, and has that certain thing going on behind his eyes that Sean Connery always brought to the Bond role. My two cents . . . -
Yes, I'd like to see it . . . inching closer to selling my soul to Comcast to rent their DVR capability. . .

<I think Flynn could have been a great Bond. He had it all in his prime: charm, good looks, intelligence and athletic credibility.> Oh yeah! And he had that "make any girl wanna take off her clothes without conversation eyes." -
Hmmm, come to think of it . . . Lonesome had that animalistic "let's get down and dirty" kinda quality that I have been known to admire from up close . . .

I concur, Andy (except for the proposed dramatic ending for SITG). You crystallized a point I made early on in this thread. I discovered "Face in the Crowd" in my 30s; rather late since I became a classic film lover in my single digits. So, if it airs frequently during prime time, at least someone will see it for the first time and appreciate it the way many of us do. Here's another bright side. If it's shown during "The Essentials" and we don't want to see it AGAIN, we have a good reason for skipping Drew.

I'm enjoying this thread very much. I confess that I've not seen all of the JB films in their entirety, but have seen most in parts. I couldn't resist searching YouTube to refresh my memory of Sir Tom Jones' rendition of theme "Thunderball." Cool visuals at the 2012 BAFTA awards here, too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmwcHjosRKw -
Love Albert Finney . . . but you know he's not American, right? Now for the green-eyed brunette . . . Jeannette MacDonald could play witty, coy and charming very well, but I'm not sure of her eye or hair color. Now you could always go with Bette Davis (despite blue eyes). She could play anything you wanted.

Aw, man, I didn't tune in last night. Thursday night, a 5 or 6-day champion was unseated and I didn't tune in last night to see how the "new winner" fared. Bummer.
-
When I saw it on the calendar, I thought: "Maybe there's one or two people out there who haven't yet seen it who'll tune in. So, that will be a good thing." Today my Halloween present to myself arrived from amazon.com . . . so, continuing my own "fright fest" with Roman Polanski's "The Fearless Vampire Killers" (1967). I haven't seen it for many, many years. Then after that, maybe "The Innocents" (1961).

Fair Use is neither a "defense" nor a "right." It is the name of a standard with FOUR parts that the courts use in determining whether or not someone is liable for publishing part or all of something that is copyrighted by someone else.

Last night watched "Dracula'' (1979) with Frank Langella. I opened a window for some air.

Michael Curtiz, One of the Great Film Directors

I'd wager that Curtiz didn't have (or didn't care to have) a publicist. -
Drew Barrymore Gives Birth (Welcome To To World Olive Koperman)

Even World News on ABC with Diane Sawyer did something with the "story." Slow news cycle. -
Right on, Sepia. Moreover, there could be no defamation claims given that she was a public figure and would have to prove actual malice (a stiff standard by any measure).
