I am, have been, and will be only one thing--an American Cheerios consumer. Plain old wholesome golden oats Cheerios, not any of this Honey Nut Triple Strawberry Tutti Frutti junk. And for those who like old fogie Raisin Bran, they can all go to the bathroom.

At the very least they could have shown Boomerang, the 1947 one of course.

Yeah, Rebel Rebel was a pretty good, fairly straightforward pop tune. I have most of Bowie's albums from that period, but a Bowie loving friend had Diamond Dogs, so I never bothered to buy it myself. I was taking a look at his records sales just out of curiosity, and he got a lot more press than he did record sales. Not that that says anything about the quality of the music, it's just sort of an interesting side note.

Just goes to show it's never too early to consider purchasing a bro, even if it's only a training bro.

I remember real flesh and blood bullies from high school. A lot more was hurt than your feelings. So I don't regard internet bullies all that seriously. Sticks and stones, etc. Bullies can turn into a term like trolls--somewhat ambiguous and used for activities that might be far from actual bullying or trolling.

I was a huge Bowie fan in the early 1970s. Wore the records out, went to some concerts, but by the time Scary Monsters came out I had moved on, just like The Thin White Ziggy himself.

Does religion get in the way of a star's career?
Bildwasser replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
As others have already mentioned, as sleazy as McCarthy and Cohn were, McCarthy was in the Senate and had nothing to do with HUAC or Garfield. They really didn't need showbiz figures to go after because they were quite a show all by themselves. -
David Bowie and The Spiders from Mars, Starman.

Does religion get in the way of a star's career?
Bildwasser replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
At least some of the actors harassed by HUAC seem to have been Jews from the New York City area who, for whatever reason, were likely to have some in- terest in so-called left wing organizations, more so than a non-Jew (or Jew) from Kansas for instance. There might have been some lingering anti-Semitism among the HUAC "worthies," but their major focus was on those with leftist or liberal views. Some of the more unusual and outright bizarre character names in Dickens are meant for symbolic or humorous effect or a combination of both. I wouldn't take them too seriously as names that were later changed. They were what they were for a literary purpose. -

Somehow I don't see Loretta as someone who would blow your nose and then blow your mind, though I guess it's not beyond being possible. ?:|

Thanks, but genius or verging had nothing to do with it. I'm enjoying your posts very much, very funny, including the customized photos. As much as I get a kick out of Peyton Place, it's a pretty easy and large target, almost as large as.....never mind.

Allison, I'd like you to come upstairs with Mr. Rossi and me for a moment. There's something he learned about in France called a menage a trois. I believe down in Boston they call it a three way. *Payday Place* Things have changed quite a bit over the last fifty years in the little New England village. The Harrington mill has long since closed, the few remaining jobs outsourced to Bhutan. Rodney Harrington II now runs a string of payday loan stores. Selena manages the Victoria Secrets store in the Peyton Place Galleria. Ron Rossi is a minor porno star, most famous for his flick Hard as Granite State. It was recently discovered that old Doc Swain was glad to provide an abortion if the price was right. And Allison MacKenzie? She never quite fulfilled her fantasy of becoming a writer. She now edits microwave owner's manuals for GE. Oh, the dreams of yute.

I've always found Dark Passage to be a very entertaining movie, despite the too coincidental coincidences. Bacall just happened to be painting in the mountains on the very day Bogie escaped from the joint and then she just happened to drive by while he was knocking out the guy who picked him up. Okaaay. I like the contrast between the way the plastic surgeon looked--very creepy--and his expertise in his job and his humane- ness. If you've never seen the film before, you might suspect that Sam the cabbie and the cig smoking surgeon might double-cross Bogie, but they turn out to be stand-up guys, relatively speaking. Yes, Agnes is a bit over the top, but not too much to ruin things. She must have been a real busy gal, and though it might not have been able to spell it out, she's pretty...well, easy. Well at least at the start. I felt sorry for ole George Fellsinger. He appeared to be a nice guy and had that very memorable last name. Too bad he didn't see Agnes coming. The role of the small change chiseler and blackmailer with the awful seat covers would have been a natural for Elisha Cook, Jr., except for the fact that Cook was usually so inept in his criminal doings that Bogie likely would have beat him up before they even got out of the hotel room. One might expect that the movie might end with Bogie going to the cops and trying to clear things up, but obviously that's pretty much a fool's errand, so he winds up in Peru with Bacall. Though he's innocent, it still feels like he has gotten away with something, Production Code-wise.

I'm always creeped out about that part of Three Faces where she is playing in that crawlspace under the porch. We had one of those underneath our side porch and although there were wooden slats across it, one could still see in. Dirty and probably with a few creepy crawling things about. Yuck.

I haven't been there in decades. The theater used to be on what I guess one would call the ground floor or basement. I presume it's still in that location. It was a good place to see movies and then slowly come out into the light of day again. One thing I remember is how small Dali's The Persistence of Memory was.

OT: Dumbing down: Who's really to blame?
Bildwasser replied to Sepiatone's topic in General Discussions
Nobody's to blame, it's just time marching on. There is that old saw about Socrates complaining about the yutes of his day, but I'm not sure it's authen- tic. The kids will be all right. -
Mashed potatoes? Yuck. Baked Potato with Sour Cream would have sounded better, though it's kind of long for a song title. Aerosmith had Rocks and didn't the Rolling Stones have a compilation album called Hot Rocks? I was surprised a few nights ago when I heard Bryan Ferry's cover of The In Crowd being used in a commercial for a designer shoe store. Weird.

To my mind the Stooges represent the traditional Three Ages of Man: youth (Curley), adulthood (Moe), and old age (Larry). As in life, in their shorts they are often at the mercy of fate and its random occurrences, what might be called the slings, arrows, and eye pokes of outrageous fortune. For those of a religious bent, there is the obvious trinitarian aspect of the figure of three, or perhaps not. Sub rosa, subtext. To each their own.
