  1. Yup. That's a way it can work when there is a writer on board already. Re-writes are not the career-starter you might think. You are better off doing minimal and get a nod to another script with credit down the way.

Great way to meet the power in town, though.

  2. I don't know. SansFin. When I followed local news, the heightened reportage on such weather events were strongly influenced by the stations ratings. The more dire the predictions and warnings, the more eyeballs they gathered. Psychologically, it is a relief to get a close call, to be prepared and then not have the bad event happen. I like dodging the bullet myself, so I am never feeling punked about a storm that didn't hit. but rather passed.

I know with darkness the wind is spookier.. Hope if you feel comfortable with batting-down the hatches and you keep yourself aware moment to moment. This will be a very long night for many people. My thoughts are with you.

  3. Wow. that is something. Even with Sandy bearing down on you, you took the time to sign up with the TCM message boards in order to complain.

Welcome to the boards. I don't agree with your assessment, but it is nice to be able to express our opinions.

I can't think of two easier-going guys for intros and info than Robert and Ben.

  4. It is a drama; no, let me reword it: a MELODRAMA, for apparently the actual sinking wasn't dramatic enough.

My biggest problem with the movie happened when Jack and Rose went below decks four times!, in that frigid water (28 degrees in the ocean; could have warmed only to 35-40 in the ship) up to their chests during the sinking. The first time would have been difficult enough, but to run around in those cold clothes for another 60+ minutes in 45 degree air temperatures was too much for me to accept.

Also: see how cruel Rose was.. Jack could have fit; it would have just taken balance, like boarding a canoe.

    *SNAP!*

  5. True, the larger message of all these stories is the affirmation of love which has no boundaries. It is romantic and very action-oriented. So, the result is something quite metaphysical in the telling.

One more comment of *Cloud Atlas:*

There are sequences of dialog which are barely understandable. It was a strange combo to me of ebonics with ****. I am not kidding. Fortunately, I did get the gist of it, and found that fascinating that parts of the story be told as such, but I don't know how successful it will be for many viewers.

  6. >First, about "Cloud Atlas," I know this movie is based on a book - haven't read it - but from what I have read about this movie it seems very familiar??

    >Like the plot has basically been done before?? But I can't put my finger on the movie??

The telling for the screen reminded me of two films in style-- *The Time Traveler's Wife* and *The Matrix.* this movie seemed to blend the themes of both, but to me did a far better job of joining the narrative threads.

    >Anybody want to help? I could and probably will try and answer my own plea by doing some research but just thought I'd throw it out there anyway.

    >And no, I won't be going to see "Cloud Atlas."

Seeing it on the big screen without distractions helped. Viewing it at home it will feel disjointed for most people may not read the book. I am still not sure why a novel can get away with this jumping time element and a movie can't always do it successfully. For those who enjoyed *The Matrix,* this will not be a stretch for them.

    >Second, about the "date," is the fact the beau isn't into movies a dealbreaker?

    >Obviously you noted he didn't want to talk afterward about the movie, so it registered with you.

    >So is that a negative for this guy... Is he already ancient history??

    >Anyway, maybe too much information here and you don't have to reply... Talk about nosy...

    >

    >..BTW, and related to my second comment above, think Miss W. is looking to start a TCM Dating Service... Or a "Classic Avid Film-goers" Date Line...

HA! I actually kept the comments very brief to avoid the "too much information" response. But you want to go there, or you wouldn't have asked the questions.

I am well aware that this is a sidebar discussion, but if we are getting into what maybe my date's movie viewing habits, it maybe germane to the discussion, thus be relevant.

My profile on the dating sites inform (rather than warn, but maybe I need to more strongly word my profile) about being a movie/film lover in several references already. I do not consider their less than intense interest a deal-breaker, but once I meet these gentlemen, they consider my interest a deal-breaker for them at times. My deal-breakers are Papa Hemingway lookalikes (leaves a large group of prime-time men out of the running, I know) NASCAR lovers and ex-wives of high drama.

  7. For those in the storm's path, please be careful. I cannot imagine a super storm in the Northeast and the population concentration there.

Please be safe, Gus and Lydia, Theresa, Ross, Wendy, and anyone who may feel Sandy's touch in the next few days..

  8. db-

Your description also fit my ex.

I think I must want to talk about the movies as I watch them. Last night, my date took me to see Cloud Atlas. I don't think he enjoyed it as much as I did. During the movie, some characters actually talk in a strange sort of shorthand style, and I thought the audience was trying too hard to decipher it. I wanted to talk about it, afterward, but he didn't.

Turns out, he's not such a movie fan. You learn that people come here loving the movies, but not all movie goers are movie lovers.

  9. >*Our Lives are not our own. From womb to tomb, we are bound to others, past, and present and by each crime and every kindness, we birth our future.*

    >

    >*Yesterday, I believe I would never have done what I did today. I feel like something important has happened to me. Is this possible? I just met her, and yet... I have fallen in love with Luisa Rey.*

  10. willbe- I do really watch the movie the first time, and it is not an excuse to make out.. haha. Oh well, shut off the TV and kiss me, you old fool...

dpompper- My name is Charlotte, so don't call me surely, lol but I am not kidding! And the last time was with two women in their forties!! (facepalm)

But they knew about Beaches. (more facepalm)

that was one I thought was a mention in worst movie lists..

  11. This is what I was thinking about last night, while I wanted to talk about All the President's Men.

Out of happenstance, I am watching movies alone. But as I am navigating through the social dance of dating, I realize I NEED a movie lover in my life. Just to talk about the movies.

The first time I watch something, at home or on the telly, I prefer not to talk, because I do not want to miss a detail. But the challenge comes from watching with someone who either hasn't seen it before (while I have) or someone who doesn't want to point out favorite shots or something that strikes a cord to a memory even though they've seen many times. Sigh.. Men aren't interested in watching the movie so much when I sit next to them...

I do love to watch the old ones on the television with like minds who are familiar, but sadly it has been a rare event. Even the Classic Movie MeetUp group I joined will attract people who've never seen Casablanca! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!

  12. >*Where are you?*

    >*Stuck... the story is stalled...*

RIP George McGovern, who was a hero of our Greatest Generation and a model of bravery for my generation.

h5. I still shake when I hear the name Kenneth Dahlberg..
