  18. I just love Harlow in "Hold Your Man", Antar. Watched it yesterday on TCM and I had forgotten how much I enjoy that film! Love when Gypsy (Dorothy Burgess) says to Harlow "Who are you?" and Harlow replies with: "The Queen of Sheba!". So I'll go out on a limb and say "Hold Your Man" was Harlow's best also (although it was a tough decision 'cause she was great in "Red Dust" too).

  20. How odd, Venerados, I came in here to post about Suspicion also! The ending of that movie REALLY aggravates me. The movie is based on the book 'Before the Fact' by Francis Iles. Suspicion is one of the famous examples where, in the process of rewriting the novel for the big screen, the plot was tampered with to an extent that Iles' original intention was completely reversed. As William L. De Andrea states in his Encyclopedia Mysteriosa (1994), Suspicion "was supposed to be the study of a murder as seen through the eyes of the eventual victim. However, because Cary Grant was to be the killer and Joan Fontaine the killee, the studio - RKO - decreed a different ending, which Hitchcock supplied and then spent the rest of his life complaining about."
  21. Welcome aboard ahclassicfan5429! I just LOVE romantic comedies! Here are some of my all time favorites: "The Shop Around the Corner", "It Happened One Night", "My Man Godfrey", "Bringing Up Baby", "Come Live with Me", "Libeled Lady", "Third Finger, Left Hand", "My Favorite Wife", "The Philadelphia Story", "Holiday", "The Talk of the Town", "Ball of Fire", "The Awful Truth", "Bachelor Mother"--WHEW! I could just keep goin'! As for modern day romantic comedies: "Bridget Jones' Diary","Moonstruck", "Four Weddings and a Funeral", "The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain" (think I feel the same way about Cary Grant and Hugh Grant as sandykaypax does *grin*), "The Princess Bride" (guilty pleasure), "As Good As it Gets", "Frankie & Johnny"--probably more but I'm gonna call it quits for now!
  22. Well, I for one have to admit I'm pleased that LOTR won 11 (?) Oscars including best picture. You see, I've been a Tolkien fan from way back--read the books for the first time when I was 12 years old, and again about ten years later. Tolkien deals with questions both fundamental and timeless, the nature of good and evil, of man, and of God. And having read the books, I would have to say the producers are to be congratulated for a relatively faithful depiction of one of the greatest high epic romances and most realized heroic sagas of modern literature. Another point to consider, THE LORD OF THE RINGS influenced Star Wars, not vice-versa.
  23. I think Charlize Theron definitely has the "classic beauty" look. She looked so glamorous in that nude beaded Gucci gown by Tom Ford that she wore to the Academy Awards. I also consider her a very talented actress. I caught the tail end of one of her interviews last week in which she said she's dying for a comedy role. Classic beauty, incredible acting talent AND that supa hot Stuart Townsend for a fianc?e. Oh how I'd like to be in her shoes for a day (or more )!!
  24. I agree with you Mongo. "Mrs. Miniver" is a wonderful movie and a timeless classic that definitely deserved all the awards it received.
  25. All I can really say about Judy Garland is that I don't dislike her. She's never been a favorite of mine but I have enjoyed many of her movies -- "Meet Me in St. Louis", "Easter Parade", "The Harvey Girls", "The Wizard of Oz" to name a few. I, like Paty, have always liked Deanna Durbin more than Judy though. As far as Joan Crawford goes.....I feel the same way about her as daddysprimadonna. I liked her in the silents and the movies she did in the early 30's; but after that she seemed to go through some sort of bizarre transformation that really turned me off.
