  1. I think the first movie that really "stuck to my ribs" was Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast. I was about ten years old when I first saw the movie, and I'll never forget watching it in the basement of my parent's house (my dad was upstairs watching a football game in the living room). My mom set up this little old tv for me to watch this fabulous movie with her for the first time. I was absolutely spellbound. I'll never forget the magnificent white horse with magical powers, candelabra with human arms, tears that turned into diamonds and soooo much more. I remember feeling so sorry for the Beast I found myself crying at times. Oh, and the cinematography still amazes me today. About a year ago I found the movie on Amazon and immediately bought a copy. I watched it this time with my three young sons. They loved it, subtitles and all (well, they are boys...so I had to endure the occasional wisecrack...lol). I was spellbound once again.

  2. I would have to say my "guilty pleasure" is watching horror movies. From the original Frankenstein to Silence of the Lambs....if it's spooky, macabre, etc. I'll be watchin' with my hands up to my face peakin' through my fingers!!

  3. Can't thank you guys enough for the recommendations. I'm happy to announce that I found a few of the books on ebay. Each for a GREAT price! My mom, grandma & aunt are also classic movie lovers...so not only are ya helping me find a good book for myself, you are helping me out with my Christmas shopping! :)

  4. Well, I gotta say I got a good chuckle out of reading these posts. Rogan, it's like you are just askin' for an argument in here. Ya can't TELL people what to do like that...we all have different likes and dislikes and that should be respected. I WOULD be watching TCM tonight if it wasn't for the fact that I'm going out for the evening. And as far as the Technicolor thing goes....I think we all read ya loud and clear. No need to beat a dead horse.

  5. Thanks so much for replying to my post. I've just written down the titles and plan on looking into them right away. Oh, and I agree with you coffeedan that ebay, used bookstores etc. are great places to look for this type of book; but since so many of you seem so knowledgeable on the classics and the classic stars I really wanted an opinion from you guys before I went out on my trek. I'll also keep what ya said about Hedy Lammar in mind antarctic ;)

  6. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a book that gives information (minutia if you will) on classic movie stars. I realize no one book could cover ALL of the wonderful actors of the past; but is there one (or more) that covers many?

    Thanks!

  7. Well, since I gave a list of the stars I consider most likeable, I figured I'd swing over here and list the ones that I'm not so fond of.

#1: Marilyn Monroe ~ She just has to open her mouth and she irritates me.

#2: Grace Kelly ~ So cold and distant.

#3: Victor Mature ~ Hell, he even admitted he couldn't act (he wasn't hard on the eyes though ;) ...hehehe).

#4: Gregory Peck ~ Another cold fish

#5: The Marx Bros. ~ I must have missed somethin' with these guys. Just don't see the attraction.

Anyway....hope I didn't offend anyone with my choices. It's all just a matter of opinion, right?
