  1. I am delighted to find there are some other serious John Garfield fans out there although I certainly know he has always had a following. I would point out that there is one absolutely sensational John Garfield movie that for some reason is constantly overlooked when TCM or others decide to run a selection of his films. That is the magnificent "We Were Strangers." It's the story of a 1930s revolt in Cuba where Garfield plays a Cuban American from New York who comes to the Island with money people in the U.S. have raised to start a revolution. The film was directerd by John Huston, another reason why its' constant omission is so baffling. Huston pulls a Hitchkok by appearing very briefly in the movie as a Senor Munoz. Also in the film are Gilbert Roland, a wonderfully villainous Laird Cregar, Pedro Armendariz, and a young and very beautiful Jennifer Jones. I'd love to hear from other Garfield fans who know the movie and would agree leaving it out of a retrospective is a major omission.
