Just a note ... for those of you who haven't read "Cagney on Cagney," Jimmy's autobiography, please do. It's a wonderful book and gives you a really good look at the man himself, personally and movie-related. His ability to handle his life was learned from his mother and his brothers and sister, and his attitudes toward Warners and others are down-to-earth and sensible. My favorite story in it is when he talks about having learned how to fight in the streets of New York. He said once a guy began ragging him in a stadium after the game, telling him he wasn't so tough, etc. etc. Jimmy let him talk, and then said, "Look how stupid you are. You're standing there threatening me, with your back to a concrete stairway." The guy looked around and turned white. One push and he would have been at the bottom of the stairs with God knows how many bones broken, or maybe dead. A friend of mine has his gloves from "Ceiling Zero." He had very short fingers, apparently, but he wasn't very big, was he?

Dirk Bogarde was a favorite of mine as far back as the beginning of his career, when he was doing the Doctor series. His voice is a huge part of his persona, as is James Mason's. I heard Gregory Peck tell a story about Mason, which tickled me. He said James rarely told anecdotes, but he did tell his friends this one: He was in Dublin, walking along one evening, when he was stopped by a lady, who said, "Wouldn't you be James Mason in his later years?" Bogarde became a writer of such renown that his books sold out as soon as they were written. It began, he said, when a publisher caught him on television in an interview, and he was telling stories. He did them so well the publisher phoned and asked him if he'd be interested in writing a book. He agreed it might be interesting, and so "Chutes and Ladders" was born, and after that seven others, I believe. He was a fabulous writer, never boring, his subjects always fascinating, and not just about show business, but reminiscences of England in his childhood and later of his life overseas. James Mason's most effective movie, to me, was "The Man in Grey," with Phyllis Calvert and Stewart Granger. I loved him in a Regency romance. He was sensational in that one. I love Bogarde when he's playing a shifty wife murderer, as in "Cast a Dark Shadow," with Margaret Lockwood. Terrific performance. Okay. That's all I've got to say.

I loved Lurene Tuttle in this. If you don't mind a little personalization here, I jumped up and down when he began to play "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," and she began singing it. Being a saloon piano player myself, it's one of my standard ways to wake up the crowd and get them singing. It's a great trick. There are lots of ways to set the tone ... sweet, fast, funny, whatever you want. And of course the finish is everything. I used to see a guy in vaudeville named Marty May, who would instruct the orchestra in his opening monologue that if he was dying on stage they should play something patriotic. Naturally at the end of the act they'd play God Bless America for his exit. (They all know the importance of music getting on and off. Once I was playing for an event in San Diego and Milburn Stone came in as I was playing "The Whistler and His Dog," and he looked at me and said, "Is that my entrance music?") Liberace knew every trick in the book to keep his audience reacting just as he wanted them to. He was an exceptionally graceful tapdancer as well. And his finish was perfect. The end of the routine made me laugh with delight, his dancing off the stage was so smooth. I checked out a couple of YouTube clips after I saw the movie, and found the exact same routine, the boogie lesson, the tap dance to Tea for Two and all, and another clip where he was doing the tap dance with Debbie Reynolds, poetry in motion, the two of them. She looked good, too, very slender, in a white gown slit up to here. They were great friends. I'm not sure I'll live long enough to see all his TV clips, but I'm having fun going through them. This movie was very well cast, too, I thought. Everyone in it seemed placed just right; no sour notes. I just couldn't believe the out-of-town impresario didn't know what "laying them in the aisles" meant and had to have it explained to him. Oh, well. Perfection is hard to come by, no?

One point: The reason I quit smoking after 15 years, in 1967, was that I read an article called "Cancer Country" in Reader's Digest, which stopped me cold. I had been rationalizing my smoking by saying that women didn't get lung cancer as men did, etc. (all rationales which are blown to bits now by the data), and then I read that article describing the cancer ward the author had been put in because there was no room in the hospital in any of the other areas, when he was there for something else. He said he'd never had any idea that people could live with holes in their throats, mopping up mucus all day with soggy tissues; or that half their faces could be gone; or that people coud be without noses, all cancers caused by smoking. It was brought home to me further when I was at a plastic surgeon's office for a small procedure and met a woman whose nose was bandaged. We talked about why we were there, and she said it was her 28th operation to reconstruct her nose. My rationale that I had to die of something, and it might as well be lung cancer as anything else, was shot full of holes when I realized I might NOT die of lung cancer, but might have to LIVE with something so horrible I couldn't picture it. Years later I had a client who had emphysema, caused by his smoking. He had tables full of medicine bottles in his house. He was 6' 3" and weighed 111 pounds. He died within a year of my meeting him.

The story is partly true, but apparently has been changed a bit to make it sound more like an incident rather than a process. Humor was part of his performances early on. He invented little gimmicks like the Three Little Fishies number in the styles of several different composers, and it helped to sell his act. In this movie, he does a boogie number which is incredibly difficult and he does it so offhand you never even know he's thinking about it; he tells the story of boogie woogie and where it changed from one form to another, and ends up doing it 16 beats to the bar, double time. Unbelievably good, but a gimmick, obviously practiced until he was technically perfect at it. You have to hand it to the guy; he knew where the money was and how to take care of his family with his success, which he did very nicely for decades. I wish I'd had the chance to see him in live performance. I always enjoyed his shows on television. It was always great to see how he made fun of himself but never lost that tremendous skill at the piano.

Make that three. My dad died at 53 from a stroke because of cigarette smoking. He had eight children, whose hearts were broken when he left us so early. I smoked for 15 years until I wised up. I stopped but it was the hardest thing I ever did. It's been 45 years now and I'm thrilled that I did it. I'm nearly 85 and very healthy. No coughs, colds, no bronchitis. I had all of those when I smoked. They should just ban them. I know they won't, but they should. You might as well inhale cyanide as those things.

Surprise. I liked it. It's of my era, when Liberace was reasonably new on the scene. My boss's wife had known him when he worked in her dad's club, I think in Florida, and when he came to D.C. they went over to say hi at the hotel. He was very much the same, she said. I don't remember if he'd made this picture at that point or not; I don't think so. I don't remember seeing it, so this was the first time for me. I expected I'd laugh and think it was stupid, but I didn't. It's true, it's hokey and predictable. The plot is from the old George Arliss picture, The Man Who Played God, which gave Bette Davis her start. At least she credited Arliss with creating her career. But I think it's eminently suitable for Liberace. He was an amateur when it came to the acting; but he was just such an original performer. You can't compare him to anybody else. When he got to that piano, nobody could touch him. You have to know a little bit about concert pianists to understand how good he was. It's the hardest job in the world, lonely and demanding, eight to twelve hours a day practicing, with no guarantee that you'll ever get anywhere, with only the top two or three percent even managing to make a living at it. I heard a famous conductor say once, "When concert piano students ask me for my advice about going in for it as a career, I just say, 'Don't.'" Concert artists at that time came and went and some did make a living, some achieving absolute greatness, but nobody combined the complete musicianship and empathy with the audience that Liberace did. He understood who he was playing to and for. This came through in the movie, even though it was a long time before he'd polished his Vegas persona. I think he always had it, that confidence that lit up his face when he sat down to play. He was one hell of a piano player. Music has been my life, and I've heard and seen the great ones, and from my viewpoint, he could stand right up there with them and not be ashamed. He was faster than anyone I ever heard, literally, and sure and strong. An amazing pianist, and far from the fool they used to try to make of him, with his fur capes and sequins and cars on stage and flying in from the wings ... show business personified, and it made him his millions. But make no mistake. He was an artist at the piano. The movie was the only one he ever made, I understand, and that's probably a good thing. But I'm glad he made it. I really liked it. We have a decently made record of those flying fingers and that cheerful face that I always liked looking at. I can ignore the plot for that.

Ann had really great aim. Every time I've watched this number I've instinctively held my breath, afraid she'd step on somebody, but she misses them all!

I interviewed Vic Damone in 1949 when he was 21. He had Sinatra's records on the turntable and said he played them before going onstage. He worshiped Sinatra. He also sounded a great deal like him at the time.

Yes ... Hattie Jacques played the matron in this wonderful scene. The first and only time she smiled in the movie. The patient with the well-placed daffodil taking his temperature was Wilfred Hyde-White, one of my favorites. The joke was an old one but the audience howled anyway. Your turn ...

This was a British film. Part of what later became a series.

Gordon MacRae it is, Skipper. I'm not sure when he became an alcoholic ... I think that's probably progressive ... but I know he quit and helped others afterward. It was Mitch Miller who said he "could sing under water," meaning he had no limits to his ability. I remember reading at one time that he never stopped taking lessons throughout his career, in contrast (in the article) to Mario Lanza, who wouldn't work at his singing but only wanted to coast on what he knew. Once he had stopped drinking he helped other show business alcoholics to stop as well.

Cabre was apparently typecast. They all felt he was conceited, arrogant, sure of his own popularity, just like Montalvo. (I got the name wrong first time but you knew who I meant.) I was impressed with the little rascal, to tell you the truth. Now: We have an oddly placed daffodil.

Aha! Or should I say "Ole!"? Is that Montalvan, the matador, slashing his father's portrait in his mother's house, in "Pandora and the Flying Dutchman?" And if it is, check out my Pandora message in General Discussions ... I just read about him the other day. And if it's not him, read it anyway. It's interesting, I think.

Not Howard Keel. The man in question was a definite alcoholic who quit drinking late in his career.

Not Frank. Funny you should mention him, though; this same music director was comparing him to this other guy who could "sing under water" when he brought it up. He said Frank's voice was very frail and he couldn't sing after he'd been carousing.

A famous movie singer was described as being able to stay up and drink all night and sing like an angel next day. A music director once said of him, 'He could sing under water." Who do you think this strong guy might be?

I'm readng some very interesting stuff about that movie in a biography of Ava Gardner, called "Ava Gardner, Love is Nothing," by Lee Server. I had no idea Mario Cabre, for instance, was not only a real bullfighter, but actually DID the bullfight scenes for the movie, with no stunt doubles except in the death goring by the bull, when they used a dummy. The bulls he was to fight were the wrong kind for the picture, but had been bought by someone who had no experience choosing bulls for the ring, and these had terribly big, very sharp horns. He was lucky he wasn't killed. He actually thought he might be, but was very brave and went on as though it weren't an unusual situation. According to the critics he was an awful actor, but I didn't think so. He seemed pretty good to me, for a guy who didn't speak a word of English and had to do it all phonetically. He spoke French and he and Ava had to communicate through a third part interpreter who spoke French and English. I was surprised also to find that the movie is supposed to be very surrealistic (of course I wouldn't be much of a judge of that anyway). It's one of my favorites, anyhow. It's a good bio of Ava. Really good. I understand there's a new one out, "Conversations," which is supposedly the real skinny.

The foreign films, and there are too many of them, belong in art houses or on a spin off channel, why not TNT or TBS since those channels already cater to the lowest common denominator. I'm afraid I have to agree on this and most of your other points. Add one more: The sloppy Closed Captions in many movies, which are obviously done by machine and haven't any oversight by humans who know the differences between similar words. It's maddening to read that someone "shall be a tainted traitor" instead of "attainted traitor;" it's distracting and infuriating because it breaks your concentration. Some of us need those captions ... I had to use them when I ran a B&B because you couldn't keep the sound going when the guests were sleeping ... but it seems as though they're throwaways as far as the people who issue these pictures are concerned. Lately I don't bother watching at night, because it seems everything is either silent or in another language. I go through the coming days and select the movies I want to see, and schedule them for recording on the DVR. I don't bother keeping the channel on any more. I've never bought anything from their stores or libraries and probably never will.
