So there's this little old man sitting under a palm tree by the waterfront in Kona, and he's crying his head off. I stopped to see what the matter was, and he said, "Oh, I'm 102 years old, and I just got married to a girl 19 years old. She's a gourmet cook, and she loves sex, and it's gourmet food and sex all day and all night!" So I said, "Well, what are you crying for?" And he said, "I can't remember where I live!"

I know I'm old because Shirley Temple and I are the same age, except that she was born in April 1928 and I made my entrance in August. The first movie I ever saw was "Little Miss Marker." My parents took me and I was impressed beyond words at the fact that they had a horse in it. I thought the only horses around were the ones that pulled ice wagons. My admiration for Shirley led to extremes like tapdancing on top of the baby grand piano, a predilection that was brought to an abrupt halt when my mother caught me doing it. Later I got to see other movies besides Shirley's. "Captain Blood" made me fall in love with Errol Flynn, a crush that never left me. Other girls were mad about Tyrone Power, but Errol was my first love. He was followed by many others ... I usually fell in love every Saturday afternoon wih a different leading man, including the most unlikely ones like John Howard. I also used to like to sit in different places in the theater, being too short to sit behind anyone else. I would sit in the very front row with my head cranked back staring sraight up at the screen, or on the far right or left where the images were all distorted and the faces looked like they'd been squashed between two frying pans. It was my idea of a blissful existence, and besides, it got me out of peeling the potatoes for dinner. The movies I saw then make me feel ten years old when I see them again. I saw "Merrily We Live" today and it took me right back. Brian Aherne was one of my crushes, of course.

Not exactly wedded bliss, as I'm sure you're aware, Mongo. He was an abusive little snip who drank too much and didn't like the fact that she didn't. Her near-suicide was only averted by her thoughts of her baby who would grow up without her. I could never look at him afterward without remembering what a heel he was.

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir: Movie vs. Show

He was really, really sexy and extremely handsome in this movie; no one has worn a black turtleneck that well since! Agreed about Rex Harrison. I watch The Reluctant Debutante all the time just to see him and hear that marvelous diction. He and Kay Kendall are superb in that picture, and even Sandra Dee was good in it. In fact John Saxon reached heights of acting skill I wouldn't have believed him capable of. These people made a great ensemble cast, and Angela Lansbury was wonderful as well. So was the British actor who played the unbelievably boring driving enthusiast. A terrific picture guaranteed to lift your spirits on a gloomy day. The set designer ought to have had an award for the London flat, as well. Anyway, back to The Ghost and Mrs. Muir: George Brent grew a beard in his later years because of the TV show, and Edward Mulhare's beard. He liked the look. -

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir: Movie vs. Show

Maybe I won't feel so bad when Bette lays into HM in "The Little Foxes!" He was married five times, and one can see why ... Gloria Swanson tells the tale in her autobiography. I did like him in several films, among them The Enchanted Cottage, which I saw just a few days ago. A lovely movie. -
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir: Movie vs. Show

I liked the show but I loved the movie, which I have on tape from long ago. I was always a Rex Harrison fan and enjoyed Gene Tierney a lot. George Sanders was impeccable as the cad who hurt her so badly. One thing about that picture was that it has a scene which is taken from real life. In the scene where Anna Lee tells Gene, so gently, that her husband has pretended to be single with other women before, it's a take on what happened to Edna Best (who coincidentally played the housekeeper/companion in this movie) when her husband's girlfriend showed up at their house. She was married to Herbert Marshall, who was a notorious flirt and who kept women on the side all the time, one of whom was Gloria Swanson. Shows what you can do with a British accent. -

Are we looking for the movies the songs were in? If so, "Bonnie Jean" would be "Brigadoon," "I could have danced all night" is "My Fair Lady," "I'm gonna live forever" is "Fame," "Somewhere over the Rainbow" is "The Wizard of Oz," and "Whistle a Happy Tune" is "The King and I." -
So they got the rights to "Star" by giving Selznick "A Farewell to Arms". He made it with Jones and it bombed at the B.O. and was the last film he ever made.... I wasn't surprised when "Farewell to Arms" bombed. Stupidly miscast. That doesn't mean the actors couldn't be subtle in other pictures. I was amazed at Rock Hudson in "Seconds." Unbelievable. Jennifer Jones of course was fine in "Bernadette." I remember Bob Walker saying she practically took the veil during the making of that movie. She was a Catholic convert and very devout at that point in her life, so I expect the script resonated with her.

:)Thank you for the John Barrymore photo. Now, I'm getting it. I'd never believe he's the same jaded man I saw on screen in the 30s as he was in his 50s then and had pretty much wasted himself with self indulgence. I see now how he became such a star if his talent matched his looks. In those days, he had a magnificent physique as well. In a biography I read, there was a picture of him in "The Sea Beast" which was so powerful I couldn't really recognize him at first. "Adventures of Casanova" is on YouTube. I'll be watching it this morning.

I'm waiting for a movie where someone sees someone murdered, they tell someone, and immediately that person believes them, and they go to the police to report it, and the police believe it too. And they go and check up on the story and find the person was telling the truth, and they take the perp into custody and they have a trial and they prove that the person did commit the murder. And the perp gets convicted and goes to prison for a long time.

Lit-tul Norma Jean Baker. -
I'm surprised to see Maureen O'Sullivan could keep her errant husband in one place long enough to have a dance and a picture taken. Lana Turner talks in her autobio about his trying to get her placed next to him in rooms at the ratty old Kona Inn in downtown Kailua-Kona when she was making "The Sea Chase" with John Wayne. She was insulted at his thinking he could reel her in as he had so many others. Wayne was installed in a mansion on the ocean up the coast. She was furious at her treatment, and she vowed at that point to get even with the producers who favored the men stars over the women. From then on her demands began in earnest. A limo waiting to carry her half a block if she felt like it, was one of them. She never wavered. "If they want me, they can pay for me," she said. Maureen talks in her book about building a separate room away from the regular part of the house so she wouldn't have to hear him come in from his assignations. So sad. Seven children, and he behaved like a sheik.

How in heavens name did you come up with her name ??? I need to know how your 'mind' works :0 I don't know how anyone else knew her name, but I knew instantly. She was the heroine in "Days of Glory," Greg Peck's movie, where he was a Russian rebel and she was the visiting ballerina in the bunker. There was a young man in that movie named Glenn Vernon whom I fell for and later met briefly. Saw him playing a bit part in "Columbo" ... a rerun of which I saw last night. I didn't recognize him, but the cast listed him, so I ran it back a couple of times. Still didn't recognize him. Ah, such is fame ... -
Oh, my. What a gorgeous man was Ronald Colman. I keep "Random Harvest" on my DVR for a quick reminder, in case I forget what real leading men were like.

Now c'mon KD. THIS one's SO easy! Why of course THAT's some guy who's face looks just like the Statue of Liberty's face! SEE.... Isn't that a little bitty Norman Lloyd falling off the crown, there? He's a tad out of focus ... -

I remember reading a quote from her about marriage or a relationship with Errol. to the effect of, "I'm not going to regret it. It could've ruined my life". I remember hearing her say that. She was very wise. I'm sure she would have rued the day, as darling as he was. He was never good luck to women. Even his last wife, Patrice Wymore, said it was sad to watch him ruining himself when he was doing drugs. Addicts are never fun to live with.
