It's been some time since I saw this film, so I hope I'm not mixing up elements of two completely different movies. What I recall is that as the film began (B/W), there was a girl and her father traveling in a wagon. I think the setting was either Southern British coast or perhaps NE coast of US, in the 1930s. One of the characters in the film was a handsome artist who maintained a secluded studio close to the beach. I thought the actor was Brian Aherne, but I think now I was mistaken because I can't find this in his filmography. The artist had a relationship with the girl who had been in the wagon with her father earlier. I can't remember how they met (I think on the beach by his studio), but the actress was pretty, had long dark hair, and had a "gypsy" quality. If I remember correctly, one or the other of these characters decided to end their relationship. (I honestly don't remember which one) But there is a confrontation where someone ends up dead. (The film is NOT "The Locket")
Another detail I'm less sure about (and the reason I think I may be confusing two films) is I think there is another male character in the film who tries to warn everyone that the girl is "bad news" but nobody listens to him. There is a scene where the two men and girl are together somewhere in a public setting (a restaurant or shop?) and there is a big fight. I think it's the same film, but I'm not sure.
I hope this rings a bell for someone!! (It's driving me crazy)

Thanks for the reply. No, it isn't "Sylvia Scarlett." The reason I think I'm mistaken about the male lead being Aherne, is that after looking around, I've found several films where he plays an artist, or is involved in some other similar plotline as the film I'm looking for. None of those films quite match. (although several sound familiar...which is going to make this tough, I think)
Another thing: At the beginning of the film, the girl is unrefined (she wears her hair down and her clothing is a little shabby), later in the film her hair is worn up and she has expensive clothing. I think maybe she has been accepting money (from the artist? another man?) and is unhappy that the bank is running dry. (definitely not a comedy)
