When this song was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song, other songwriters protested because the composer had originally written it as a duet for himself and his wife to sing at parties, and they argued that it should not therefore be counted as an "original" song. But the Academy ruled that since the song had never been performed PROFESSIONALLY before it appeared in the film, it was therefore eligible, and it went on to win the award.

It's "With a Song in My Heart" by Rodgers & Hart and it was actually first heard in the 1929 stage show Spring Is Here.  A year later it was made into a film and the song was sung by Lawrence Gray. In the 50's, the song became the title of a biopic of Jane Froman starring Susan Hayward lip-syncing to Jane Froman's vocals.
