  1. The 1953 film was much better than the 2005 remake IMO. Tom Cruise does nothing for me. One very overrated actor.
  2. That's a fascinating and interesting story TomJH.
  3. Saw WADJDA (2013) today. I highly recommend this excellent movie. Four out of four stars. A real slice of modern life and struggle of a young girl in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia who is trying for an identity in a society that denigrates women and their roles as real human beings and persons. A feel good movie about a tough coming-of-age young woman that is well worth seeing. Struggles in society as a whole and especially in a repressive religious all-girls school run by reactionary "Dark Ages" Saudi female teachers. A wonderful performance by the young star Waad Mohammed. Directed and written by a Saudi woman by the name of Haifaa Al-Mansour. The first female directed Saudi Arabian movie. Most of the men and boys in the story are far more likable than many of the reactionary Saudi women.
  4. Our local town cinema club is bringing and showing a Saudi Arabian film to our little Colorado town, WADJDA (2013). Very much looking forward to viewing this highly rated film. Has anybody else seen it? Any thoughts or comments? Has excellent reviews.
  5. THE TRAIN is a superb and taut film that I never tire of watching. Seen it many times. One of the best. After checking out MONUMENT'S MEN on the Rotten Tomatoes movie review site, there is absolutely no blooming way I want to see MM even were it to be free. Terrible reviews. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCUQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rottentomatoes.com%2Fm%2Fthe_monuments_men%2F&ei=74z2UoruBcOCyQGx-IDIAQ&usg=AFQjCNHYHEsHzmk2iSNHWszjYWFCX9UHyA&bvm=bv.60983673,d.aWc&cad=rja
  6. Saved a life after a lifetime of taking them in the movies. Kudos to Rowdy Yates as he ages. http://espn.go.com/golf/story/_/id/10418825/clint-eastwood-saves-tournament-director-choking Edited by: roverrocks on Feb 7, 2014 5:24 PM
  7. I think Close in that movie would have had Frankenstein, Nosferatu, The Mummy and Batman all skedaddleling for the hills just as fast as their shaking legs could waddle them. THAT was a scary woman!!!!!!!!!!! I am not sure any drug either natural or synthetic would made a dent in her psyche. Glad you recovered from your addiction Sepiatone. Takes a big person to do it. 8. Scary Mongols?? John Wayne has Palance beat by a mile: (tongue in cheek) Ha! Ha!! Ha!!!
  9. Javier Bardem: the most frightening man ever onscreen. Don't want him as a cellmate.
  10. Just ask the Irish, Scots, Boers, and Welsh how bad the English Bad Boys are. Here is Patrick MaGoohan portraying the murderous King Edward (Longshanks) in BRAVEHEART. He did a deft job of being English insidious.
  11. I don't feel much sympathy for Hoffman himself but I feel a great deal of sympathy for his family, extended family, friends (any that did not help get him high), peers, and fans. Hoffman died stupidly. He was a great talent that stupidly killed himself and caused a lot of grief to those who knew and loved him. You live by the sword (heroin) you will most probably die by the sword (heroin). He murdered himself most stupidly. He played a stupid game of "Russian Roulette" with a serious dangerous drug and payed the ultimate penalty. Edited by: roverrocks on Feb 5, 2014 6:36 PM
  12. I agree with you on Gate of Hell. That clown was definitely NOT monk material. Great film. Lots of surprises.
  13. I totally agree with your assessment of THE BURMESE HARP twtpark, "a beautiful and moving film". First time I had viewed the fine film.
  14. Lady For a Day is simply a classic. My wife watched it for the first time last night and was enchanted. This is a classic that one never tires of viewing, one of Capra's finest.
  15. A wonderful movie. I saw it when it first came out and I saw it for the 2nd time today on TCM. A "feast" truly for the mind and soul. Wonderful atmospheric film. Thanks TCM.
  16. I can't for the life of me remember if I have seen this or not but I would sure like to see it again or for the first time- whichever. Sounds very interesting.
  17. The TCM schedule today Feb. 1, 2014 is as fine a line up of great movies that I have seen broadcast. Many terrific foreign language films of renown followed by an evening of superb English language films. Thank you TCM for this superb schedule. I personally am going to get very little else done today other than view movie after movie. Also thanks for the superb Gate of Hell shown last night which I had never seen before. A round of applause from my hands at least to TCM. Classic after classic.
  18. The powerful actor Max Von Sydow. One of the greats of motion picture history is still with us and the world. A true legend who made legendary motion pictures.
  19. You are so right! A Horse With No Name. Thanks for catching that misfire of mine. Great song by the way.
  20. Clint Eastwood as The Man With No Name from his spaghetti western days could easily have done it. Did he ever miss anything in those westerns? The greatest shot in cinematic history. He could knock the antennae off a flea on a bouncing prairie dog at 100 paces during a sandstorm on a three legged horse. Edited by: roverrocks on Feb 3, 2014 10:41 PM
  21. The greats Omar Sharif, Robert Duval, Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman: all over 80. Edited by: roverrocks on Feb 3, 2014 6:01 PM Edited by: roverrocks on Feb 3, 2014 6:04 PM
  22. Anything with Wily Coyote and the Roadrunner!!!!!!!!!!!!
  23. Some really good stuff!!!!! Gonna be a watching a lot of movies in the next 2 days. Watching TESS (1980) right now which I remember seeing when it first came out. A Masterpiece Theater type of film.
  24. Newman was terrific in the great movie THE HUSTLER but my best actor nod goes to Schell in JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBURG. Schell's was a riveting performance. Also really liked Schell in the THE YOUNG LIONS and also THE CROSS OF IRON.
