  1. I have been afraid to see every movie made from a great novel I have read and then was made into a movie. Most novels don't translate to the silver screen very well as the novels have to greatly condensed into 2 hours of screen time after having been viewed through the wonder of the Theater of the Mind during reading. Ann Rice and Stephen King novels come to mind as do other authors. Terrible movies except for maybe King's "The Shining" which still does not measure up to the book. I was rather afraid to watch the first of the Lord Of The Rings movies "The Fellowship of the Ring" since I had read Tolkien's great and wondrous books three times over the course of my life but I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent screen adaptations. BBC novel adaptations for long screen Masterpiece Theater presentation are the great exception as they can be many hours long.
  2. Might be BLACK WIDOW (1954) with Van Heflin and Ginger Rogers. Sounds like it.
  3. Some very very tasty "dessert" dishes!!! Thanks!!
  4. But I prefer to watch movies on TCM and spend what little $$$ I have on new history books as they come out and add them to my library which has 50 times more books than DVD's but I understand what you mean.
  5. TWO AM is an absolutely obscene time slot for so great a movie. Ridiculous eastern zone time slot for this intriguing and great German film.
  6. I will just put down my least favorite/utterly stupid/nauseatingly bad actors and they are all modern or what passes these days for modern actors: Will Farrell, Ben Stiller, Vince Vaugn, Adam Sandler. Four nauseating atrocious actors!! Oh, did I say that I also don't like them or the junk they make and I avoid them like cowpies in the hot sun. I can't think of any older or classic actors/actresses I really did not like or enjoy at least somewhat. I even liked John Belushi and was greatly saddened by his death.
  7. Two very different movies to me. Both good but WINGS OF DESIRE much better and more compelling. I really like Meg Ryan as well. The angel's love in WINGS is also a knockout.
  8. I wish that WINGS OF DESIRE (1987) wasn't scheduled so late on Sunday Jan. 19. Midnight for me. I have trouble staying up past 10 PM but that's why caffeinated drinks were invented. A WOW of a movie I have only seen once before.
  9. Just in WW2 training accidents I believe the Army Air Force suffered 15,000 dead alone even before combat operations. We would probably be astounded by British, German, and Soviet Air Crew losses as well. Flying was a dangerous business during the War.
  10. If you haven't already done so, read "A Higher Call". Simply incredible. Glad both our bomber dads survived the war. So many did not. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CE0QFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.barnesandnoble.com%2Fw%2Fa-higher-call-adam-makos%2F1111307500%3Fean%3D9780425252864&ei=-ynXUtTjNarXyAHz4YDoBQ&usg=AFQjCNH8urI30GfOMoogxCJHCySUZCvS-Q&sig2=2E3-ENXYZsPCFhkcxdtAQA&bvm=bv.59568121,d.aWc&cad=rja Edited by: roverrocks on Jan 15, 2014 7:41 PM
  11. "The Petrified Forest"(1936...and of which while I fully realize the word "remake" is considered of the dirty variety around here, I've thought for years is long overdue for one) Dargo2: What would you want in a "remake" of the great film THE PETRIFIED FOREST? Modern nudity and sex? The Bette Davis character be a mini skirted breasts-hanging-out harlot on the prowl for a money man to take her to Paris. The Bogart gang be a Mexican drug Cartel gang with everything up to nuclear weaponry? Gallons of blood, body parts, and whole bodies cartwheeling in slow motion at the gas station shootout? The F*** word said in every sentence rather than have actual well written dialogue? That the sweet/thoughtful Leslie Howard character be a lone wandering Hells Angel type with crossed sawed off shotguns on his back or would you just make Leslie into a crazed silent madman who takes everybody in with his wit and charm before **** and exterminating. The Banker and his wife could be Hollywood types fleeing from fraud in their Bentley with a Russian mafioso bodyguard/chauffeur. Must have the modern obligatory high speed mindless chase scenes plus heavily armed SWAT types rappelling out of helicopters armed with fanciful MG's. There sure are a lot of ways to have a remake of the classic THE PETRIFIED FOREST and all of them sound horrible and since all of the original fine cast/crew are long dead why don't we just tip our hats to their genius and forget a remake.
  12. Home state of Nebraska: Terms of Endearment (1983) South Dakota where I lived quite a while: Dances with Wolves (1990) State I have lived in for 25 years, Colorado: The Shining (1980)
  13. The scariest most chilling evil persona whom I have ever seen on the silver screen. From "No Country For Old Men"-------Javier Bardem.
  14. Who knew The Duke could dance?? Move over Fred and Ginger. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CC8QtwIwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DYjEJTbf7mWQ&ei=GTTUUoaqPKiMyQGR-4CADA&usg=AFQjCNHnba5bdagmH30wXq-GHjArsdwHRw&sig2=ipMcU6PhaA6s-O2UXo2eQw&bvm=bv.59026428,d.aWc&cad=rja
  15. It's really never been on TCM before??? I have seen this movie before and just figured it was on TCM. I'm surprised. Anatasia is a very good movie.
  16. KLAUS KINSKI-- Deranged looking face and eyes and persona IMO. Would not be wanting him to knock on my door in the dark of night. http://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&docid=dUzzWZYJWYRImM&tbnid=VKrxA1t5pkxZnM:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.forumla.de%2Ff-kino-tv-forum-11%2Ft-klaus-kinski-genie-des-wahnsinns-213373&ei=npzRUsv_M8fwyAHe5oFQ&bvm=bv.59026428,d.aWc&psig=AFQjCNGZpE27eJQi-8clpp27D2aVaXzI5g&ust=1389555088300716
  17. Lee Van Cleef aka Angel Eyes. Just looked mean. http://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&docid=MziG_ViTNdjZjM&tbnid=S9U5m2550B_NKM:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fvyletknight.com%2Fportfolio%2Flee-van-cleef%2F&ei=b2HRUoi2BYXayAHVhoHQCQ&bvm=bv.59026428,d.aWc&psig=AFQjCNGPrOg7tC3uh_TQQbqGdrwBNYz9Kw&ust=1389540008849909
  18. Oh how much I would like to have that wonderful lake cabin.
  19. THE BRIDE WORE RED (1937) -- Heartily enjoyed this Joan Crawford/ Franchot Tone romantic movie. Had not seen it before. Been watching quite a number of Crawford SOTM movies this month. My formerly not-so-good opinion of her has changed to very positive. RAIN (1932) last night was excellent as have been many of the others.
  20. Watching EMBRACEABLE YOU (1948) last night rather choked me up at the end. Both who had been shortchanged by life for all their short existences are going down at the end. One to death and one to prison but for a short shining moment they lived in their own World of Love and Hope. Touching.
  21. I'm with you Hibi. I watched "Gunman in the Streets" and "Embraceable You" as well. Both terrific. Nights like that are why I love TCM as well. Too many others shown way way too often.
  22. Anything with J-E-S-S-I-C-A R-A-B-B-I-T is at the top of my heap!!
  23. I don't care a fig about Elvis or his flics but am definitely looking forward to the Dane Clark movies this evening.
  24. Some of those such as Mr. Peabody and Sherman look interesting to me and maybe the French movie about rivals ant gangs going after a box of sugar. Others not very much.
  25. Smoking didn't distract from his athletic persona to me. In those days onscreen and off it was hard to find someone who did not smoke or did not smoke at least onscreen for a role.
