Hi Izcutter, As I recall, several co-hosts that I have seen expand more thoughtfully on most films. Whether they like the film or not is not the issue for me. This issue for me is: what do they have to say that is pertinent or constructive. I get left with an, for lack of a better word, icky feeling when I don't feel intellectually fed and am left wanting. I get uncomfortable with evasive or watered down, trite reviews. I want to walk away with a sense of having consumed more knowledge about a film. This may or may not be the responsibility of the host or co-host that I feel unsatisfied and baffled, however, it is the reality and I think it is their job and I blame them! Right or wrong. These are my honest feelings. It is not the end of the world but it should make for a good conversation which, as it turns out, is not currently manifesting. Thanks for your comments, I am sure that your insights are correct.

Hi wouldbestar,
Thanks for your comments. I thank all of you who have commented in an effort to educate me.
I had hoped that I had not been too harsh. Sometimes, even after mulling over an issue, I still appear naive and foolish and maybe somewhat judgmental. Being a newbie, there is still so much I have to learn about film that I count on and hang on every word that passes the lips of Robert Osborne an his co-hosts in order to be educated. I do understand that not every movie is the cup of tea for all viewers, however, I do like to get the input even if someone does not like a film. If their reasons are valid, it probably won't change my mind about the film, but at least I can consider how others see it.
I must confess that I have a special bias toward Gary Cooper. My grandmother was in a film (a lost film I think), she said it was his first film. She was an actress for a short time before marrying my dad's father. I have the stills of her in a scene with him. Knowing this about her has always made me partial to him and his movies. When I hear perfunctory comments or dismissal of one of his films it pushes my buttons.
Also, I find that there is definitely a generation gap that I had hope would close with the presence of a young co-host. I find that many 20 to 40 years olds lacking in the values I was brought up with and that are often displayed in many of the TCM films. Now I know how my parents and grandparents felt. It is not that I don't like many modern films. I enjoy movies like Boondock Saints, Star Trek Films, most Sci-Fi, Jet Li films and many of the classic Japanese films. I think the films I like are Essentials and all Essentials should be treated as such. I have broad and eclectic interests in film. However, I think most any classic American film is worthwhile in some way which makes it an Essential.

HI mr6666, Thank you for your comment. I was beginning to think it was just me. I appreciate knowing I was not alone in my befuddlement.

Hi izcutter. Thanks for the clarification. I guess I was thinking about other evenings when the co-host would stay for what seems a couple of films. Still, I don't get why RO had to ask Drew if she would stay during the airing of "Friendly Persuasion" which was the Essential film of the evening. Before he asked her to stay, she stated that she did not like the film and it was "too high collar". This gave me the impression that she wanted to leave during the airing of the film. Her statements after the film were brief, certainly non essential and somewhat perfunctory. I think what stuck with me was that she seemed unwilling to make constructive comments. I would have liked more clarification on why she did not like it. In other words, I was left wanting more insight. I do understand that she has a lot going on right now with a new baby and I just read, but am not sure, I think she is working on a new film which may be the reason for what seems to be exhaustion. Not to kick a dead horse, but here goes. At the time, it seemed important to me to get the opinion of a younger person on this film. I like the film and I guess I wanted more views as to what others, including Drew, conclude from it. In any case, the matter is closed in my mind unless someone has more on this film for which I will look elsewhere on the boards. Thanks again for clarification. Sorry to have misunderstood. I often watch TCM but am new to TCM and I still haven't got all the scheduling straight.

HI, I am new on the boards, please forgive my ignorance. I had to clear this issue up because I am very confused about last night's Essentials airing.
Is it just me or . . .What happend on the 18th of May 2013. There was a shot of Drew slumped in a chair and then gone later that evening when she was supposed to be hosting with RO? Did she fall asleep. Then the 25th RO asked if she would stay through the film "Friendly Persuasion" and give her thoughts. She clearly did not want to because she did not like the film. She stayed, then apparently left after this film. I am so confused by this. I see these antics as disrespectful to RO and the TCM audience. Why did RO have to invite her to stay when this is her "job" as she says? If she does not like a film I think she should offer specific and good reasons why not. I heard her say it was "too high collar" for her. I suppose she meant, it was to religious or too morally based as the family portrayed are Quakers. After the film she did not give any explanation why she disliked it other than that. She gave a couple of comments about liking the goose and the little boy but that was it. Doesn't she like Gary Cooper? If not, I wish she would just say so. Drew was not there for the airing of Sergeant York another film with a high moral context. Was she supposed to be? Her commentaries the last two weeks have been nil. Drew leaves me wandering around the house talking to myself trying to figure out what she contributed. Sorry, I just don't understand how this is supposed to go. Drew's manner of speech is annoying and as an actress I would think she could overcome this as a co-host, however, early on, she did have some valid things to offer concerning camera angles and such and she spoke in a lucid, articulate, enthusiatic and informative manner. What happened?
Just getting this off my chest. I tried to be supportive of Drew but now I am sorry I gave her the benefit of a doubt and now question her maturitly and manners. This behavior must have hurt RO tremendously. He is so gracious and would never let on how this affected him. It hurt me to watch this happen to such a great guy. I hope there was a good reason for her irratic behavior,

Friday Nights
in Film Noir--Gangster

I have been watching Eddie Muller this evening and I love him and all of his picks so far and probably will continue to. He is a great host and, of course, very knowledgeable. What a treat to have him on Fridays. That said, I do miss Ileana Douglas and I hope that she will be back soon too. As we are currently enjoying Film Noir, I hope to read some comments from some other viewers about thier favorites and more. I am sure I have made a faux pas somewhere regarding posting this while another thread is already addressing Friday evening but I am new and I apologize if I have overstepped or stepped on toes. I am kind of lost in all the messages. Thanks for understanding.
