  1. I guy I worked with/for years ago used to go out with her!   He told me Stewart Granger stole her away from him.

She was quite the beauty in her British film period, late 40's, early 50's.

Yes, Jean Simmons is especially beautiful in GREAT EXPECTATIONS.

    She aged very well too.

I wish TCM would air SAY HELLO TO YESTERDAY with Jean Simmons and Leonard Whiting.

  2. First time I ever saw Margot Kidder was on a short-lived James Garner series called 'Nichols'.

TCM aired SISTERS a couple of years ago.

I think it was one of the selections by a Guest Programmer.

It was a very strange and captivating movie and features a great performance by Margot Kidder.

  3. I have to say... I went into this month knowing Sterling Hayden from very little other than Dr. Strangelove. He was perfectly cast and pretty magnificent in that role. As it turns out, he's hilarious in just about everything! My new favorite comic actor. It's like General Ripper is in every one of these movies. And as a swash-buckling pirate? Wowee! I love this guy. He's a laugh riot.

I have never seen DR. STRANGELOVE due my aversion to Peter Sellers, but maybe I should give that movie a chance.

THE PARTY has also been recommended to me.

  4. Definitely.  Perhaps if they cannot get the broadcast rights for television they can at least acquire a print for a one-off showing on next year's cruise.

Maybe NipkowDisc would be so kind as to introduce the film?

I really think someone should submit their introduction to HOT SPELL in the TCM Fan Favorite contest.

  5. If you meant real-life prime ministers, then what immediately comes to mind is Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady" (2011). Streep's portrayal of Thatcher (1925-2013) -- from her early days in politics to her declining years suffering from dementia -- earned the American star her second Academy Award for Best Actress (and third Oscar overall).

Yes, it was really good performance.

I know some people on this board dislike Meryl Streep but she's a really good actor in command of both technical and emotional acting skills.

  6. Speaking of stand ins, does anyone remember when Bugs Bunny did it for the Easter Bunny in EASTER YEGGS? This is one of my favourite Bugs adventures

An altruistic Bugs agrees to step in (hop in?) for a sad sack Easter Bunny who wants to give his feet a rest

All goes well until Bugs encounters this little monster

The brat, whose mantra is "I wanna easter egg, I wanna easter egg, I wanna easter egg" makes things rough for our hero

Bugs, decidedly less enthused about this Easter Bunny business, continues on his way,  . . .

    hqdefault.jpg

until, in another house, he encounters Elmer Fudd, in disguise, with wabbit hunting on his mind

Eventually Bugs manages to paint Elmer's head to resemble an easter egg and introduce him to the brat. Elmer doesn't enjoy the experience any more than Bugs did, as you can see.

And, yes, at one point in this Bob McKimson directed cartoon, Bugs does proclaim, "Of course you know, this means war!" The Carl Stalling musical accompaniment used throughout this cartoon was a '40s hit parade sentimental favourite, "One Sunday Morning" (Anyone remember Alexis Smith warbling that tune in San Antonio, a 1945 Warners western released two years prior to this Bugs short?).

Great cartoon, but , yes, that bratty kid is annoying but funny.

  7. Hopefully not in the same sitting though.  It's ok, I won't tell.  There is something intriguing about "so good it's bad" (or is that "so bad it's good") cinema every now and then.

That's interesting idea "so good it's bad."

I guess that would apply to movies that try so hard to impress but are so obvious about it.

  8. I don't blame you for not wanting to part with that Chuck Heston letter, Bogie. He was an actor who could dominate a film spectacle like few others.

I only wish I had received a letter from Dietrich. But I did receive an autographed photo. Here it is:

Interestingly, this is not the photograph that I originally sent to Dietrich for her to autograph. Perhaps the lady didn't like that photo. Maybe she wanted to keep it for herself. Whatever the reason she sent me this image of herself from the Von Sternberg period (Blonde Venus to be exact). Actually, I think this photo is more complimentary to the lady than the one I sent her, and she was a lady very conscious of her screen image at the end of her life. (She died about a year or so after I received this photo from her).

Thanks for posting that signed photo of Marlene Dietrich, TomJH.

I had never seen any of her movies until I started watching TCM although I knew her name.

I mainly associated her with the song "Falling In Love Again." My grandmother had an album (yes, vinyl) of songs from movies and that one was on it.

I was blown away by her performance in BLONDE VENUS.

Although her part in TOUCH OF EVIL was not very big, she is mesmerizing in the movie.

  9. How so?

Apart from knowing my teen daughter loved him, I'm not very familiar with his acting. I have seen him on SNL a couple of times - didn't seem that sexy.

"SexyBack" was a song released by Justin Timberlake in 2006.

It was his first number 1 single.

The video was pretty cool (in my opinion).

The opening line was: "I'm bringing sexyback."

The very catchy (again in my opinion) chorus is "Go ahead, be gone with it."

  10. I feel that all classic actors - not just Sterling - did their best acting after the code shackles came off. Those titles mentioned above - every one from the 70's - is evidence of it (to me).

Yes, I really wish TCM would air KING OF THE GYPSIES.

  11. H.B., I have been waiting for a chance to see French CanCan (1953) for a few years. I've seen a few clips on YouTube, including one that features Edith Piaf, all hinting at a grander vision for a similar era and a similar subject portrayed in Moulin Rouge (1953) and Can-Can (1960) (Jean Renoir couldn’t fail to depict those ‘crazy shepherdesses” with affection and humor). I’m a bit confused and curious as to why you say this is scheduled to air on TCM; I couldn’t find an air date when I checked the TCMdb info.

The only MOULIN ROUGE I've ever seen is the one with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.

  12. I've never seen the version of SO BIG that has Sterling Hayden  in the cast.

I'm looking forward to seeing it although I'm not expecting it to be as good as the version directed by William Wellman and starring Barbara Stanwyck.

    I love that version.

    PS. Cabbages are beautiful
