  1. I wish I was a psychiatrist and could comfortably answer that question. I suspect he could have someone he cares about, and still be a psycho. But I could be wrong.

Good question. Are psychopaths incapable of caring about anybody (but themselves)?

I think a sociopath is unable to genuinely care about anyone's needs other than their own.

  2. As someone under 40, I am not going to attack you Lydecker.  I am in complete agreement that people's writing skills these days are abysmal.  A company like TCM should really strive to present well written and accurate information.  To me, a poorly written article, (like the much maligned "Are They Really Stars?" article that we ripped apart) undermines the credibility of the information or opinion presented.  Since newspapers have gone by the wayside, if you read a lot of the online versions of these publications, you will see many horribly written (and punctuated) articles.

Quite a few online articles are "published" without enough proofing.

Many times I see duplicated and missing words or even entire phrases or sentences written twice.

I've also seen instances where I tell the writer was taking his or her sentence in one direction and then changed the approach but  failed to go back and remove all remnants the original attempt.

  3. Regarding Raymond Massey, I must say this:

It annoys me greatly the way he sometimes (most of the time?) pronounces the name of his son Aron as "Ay-ron" in EAST OF EDEN.

No one else in the movie pronounces it that way, and I think there are a few instances where he doesn't.

  4. I got "In the Woods" out of the RedBox.  I've been wanting to see this film even though I read mixed reviews on it.  I haven't seen the original version of the play, so I won't have that to compare the film with.  The cast sounded interesting: Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt and Chris Pine.  It's also a musical and I like musicals, so hopefully this will be at least worth my $1.

    It's definitely worth the $1.

I enjoyed the movie very much.

  5. I could be wrong, but I think the film is Divorce, American Style because the man in the foreground looks like Dick Van Dyke.

    Thanks, speedracer.

I see now that it does look like Dick Van Dyke in the clip with Debbie Reynolds.

There's no full view of him, but I think you're right.

As much as I loved THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW on Nick At Nite (and now especially the uncut episodes on DVD), I never really got into THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW (which also used to air on Nick At Nite).

  6. When it comes to homevideo releases of movies you never know what the deal is with the music rights.  I recall various video VHS releases of certain films where the music was altered from what you saw in the theater.  Most of the time there's a small disclaimer on the video box that'll say something like:  HOME VIDEO VERSION - Some music re-scored.

I think LOVE AT FIRST BITE famously had a song that appeared in the theatrical release replaced in the video release.

  7. Let me do double time to catch up. SUTS honorees Olivia DeHavilland and Adolph Menjou each saw their titles spike into the lists on their respective days.

    8/2:

    1. MY LOVE TORE BACK

    2. GOVERNMENT TORE

    3. MY COUSIN TORCHEL

    4. IT'S TOR I'M AFTER

    5. ALIBI TOR

    6. TOR'S A CROWD

    7. PRINCESS TOR'ROURKE

    8. THE TOROUD REBEL

    9. SANTA FE TORAIL

    10. TOR EACH HIS OWN

What? no HUSH . . . HUSH SWEET TORLOTTE?

  8. Sorry, been out of town. But in my absence, the lists keep coming. I will go back to Aug. 1, as there seems to be an increase in the title searches, possibly due to SUTS. The Gene Tierney day saw many of her titles in the TopTen.

    1. THE RATOR'S EDGE

    2. TORBACCO ROAD

    3. TOURA

    4. WHERE TOR SIDEWALK ENDS

    5. RINGS ON TOR FINGERS

    6. THE TORGYPTIAN

    7. TOR WONTORFUL URGE

    8. THE TOR AND MRS. MUIR

    9. THE RETORN OF FRANK JAMES

    10. BLACK WITOR

    10. NEVER LET ME TOR

    10. TORS IN THE ATTIC

    TOURA is only number 3.

TOURA is aired quite frequently in TCM now, but there was a time when it never aired.

  9. I think music is what held up the DVD release of The Wonder Years for so long.  I'm wondering if it's because the release of these programs on home video is probably not something that was thought of when contracts for these shows were being made.  I imagine it has to do with royalties to the original artists who wrote the music.  Maybe they had to iron out some details related to the shows being made available on DVD/Blu Ray, Online streaming, etc.

Here's an article from 2009 about music licensing fees keeping shows from being released on DVD.

    WONDER YEARS is specifically mentioned.

COLD CASE is another show where the songs are very important.

  10. The music rights in a film are attached to the film rights.  So it comes down to the film rights itself.

I thought that music rights can be a separate issue.

I know in the case of TV shows being released on DVD there are often substitutions (or eliminations) made when the music rights cannot be obtained for what's believed to be a reasonable price.

For example, many of the songs that aired during the original broadcast  episodes of ROSWELL were replaced by different songs on the DVD release.

Also, on one episode from season one of THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, a character's whistling "White Christmas" was replaced by indistinct whistling on the DVD release.

  11. Just wish I had a better understanding of why things are bumped off the schedule. Is it that they want to air these movies but can't get the rights for some reason? At least that would be upsetting but understandable and not TCM's fault (although I wonder why they list it in the first place?)

I just hope they don't arbitrarily change their minds.

I think in most cases it does come down to not being able to secure all the rights, including music rights.
